Currently looking into a first time build, and came across a very technically interesting question.

When the motherboard has monitor port[s], and you have a video card (obviously with monitor ports), what happens with the mobo port[s]? Can you still use them?

Would the mobo port[s] be managed/powered by the MOBO/CPU and the video card ports be managed and powered by the video card? Or does the VC take over both ports? Or does the MOBO one become unusable?

If usable, does this setup have advantages/disadvantages? Can it still be used in a standard multitasking dual monitor setup?

What about all those new HDMI/other none monitor ports VCs come with now? If I got a hdmi to dvi adapter, to plugged the second monitor in, would it work the same as a video card with dual standard monitor outputs?

Also, separate question. Where how do you replace failing failing fans for video cards? Mine is staring to make a lot of noise and it seems like it just needs a replacement.

If you use mobo port, it will use integrated grpahics. If you use HDMI to DVI, you'll get no sound. Replacing GPU fan is tough because fans are not available in store. Try ebay. I'd choose 6300 instead of the one you chose. Here's a suggested build

try ebay for the fan or depending on brand they company might sell parts for them

and you can use either onboard video or the video card but not at the same time those are nice if your VC goes out you still have a pc but unless you are using a CPU with a GPU i am thinking you have a old motherboard or cheaper MicroATX because pretty much all new motherboards do not have that unless they are for CPU with a GPU

and as far as using a HMDI2DVI i suppose you could go that router but DVI does not carry sound so just keep that in mind but most video cards should have at least on HMDI a couple display ports and a DVI so going dual monitor should be fine no matter what hook up it has unless it is VGA only then you need a converter

but it should work just fine if you use HDMI2DVI converter just make sure that if you want sound you have another way of getting sound like with a head set or hooked up to external speakers or at least one monitor with a HDMI or Displayport to give you sound if your going the dual router

what kind of video card do you have? as when you run dual monitor it takes a decent GPU if you want decent frames and want decent graphics

post your specs of your pc

Dual just for multitasking, not for giant multi display gaming or anything like that.

I am looking into a cheap new PC, so not really going to be "decent". Right now I am looking at something like http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/77ry8d.

But just because the VC has a DP, DVI, and a HDMI does not mean that it is capable of handling a tri-minitor setup right? I imagine they are sort of built from the ground up to handle X number of displays, at resolution X? I am sort to wondering that if it does not have two dvi ports that it really is not designed to handle two monitors.

  • Depends on the Mobo, although most low level mobos completely deactivate your integrated video when you use a video card.

Would the mobo port[s] be managed/powered by the MOBO/CPU and the video card ports be managed and powered by the video card? Or does the VC take over both ports? Or does the MOBO one become unusable?

  • Again, depends on the mobo.

If usable, does this setup have advantages/disadvantages? Can it still be used in a standard multitasking dual monitor setup?

  • Depends on your video card and the mobo. Some combinations usually work, some don't. HDMI+DVI works on most cases.

Also, separate question. Where how do you replace failing failing fans for video cards? Mine is staring to make a lot of noise and it seems like it just needs a replacement.

  • If you are handy, maybe you can do it yourself, adapting fans of the appropriate size. Most of the time, it's too difficult to do, though.
