I dont know if it's better to leave it on or turn it off every time I go to bed.
I heard re-starting the PC damages it more than leaving it on for some hours, but I would like to hear what you usually do.

I do. Not because I'm conscious about the environment, but because I'm cheap. Assuming I'm not downloading / running a virus scan / defragging, I pretty much turn it off when I won't be using it for more than two hours.

That it's bad for you computer to do so is absolute bullshit btw. It would more likely be bad to leave it on, because the heat output does more to a products lifespan than turning it 'off'.

Turning the PC off, because:

  1. Less energy costs (= more steam games)
  2. Less Damage on harddrives, they do not like to be online 24/7
  3. Less noise
  4. Not so f** warm in your apartment

I used to turn it off periodically some nights especially on weekends. Now I only turn it off when leaving the house.

If I am out, sleep or simply don't use it, I don't turn it on or turn it off. Why would I leave it on when I am not using it?

Yes, I turn it off when I go to bed or when I leave the house. Unless you are planning to use the same PC for the next 10 years, you shouldn't be worried about restarting or shutting it down. Most people upgrade their PC often enough that at least 2 or 3 owners can use each part before it receives any significant wear (I do hope people are selling or gifting their used electronics instead of just throwing them out).

Even if you ignore electricity consumption of a running PC, any powered on electronics are a fire hazard. I've seen a sleeping PC shooting sparks out of the power supply because of a power spike, luckily I was there to unplug it.

So I wouldn't leave anything non-essential running when you don't need it to.

Yes, unless downloading a game off steam I usually turn it off at night or going to work. I think that the people who are turning it on/off & damaging it might have been with older or poorly maintained pcs. Should be safe to turn it off & with Windows7 the boot process isn't that long.

I never turn it off unless I know I won't be using it for 2+ days. I put it on hybrid sleep every night when I go to sleep, unless I need to download something or shit like that. I also sometimes put it on sleep when I go outside during the day. I restart it before playing Rocksmith and some other performance heavy games (RAGE >.< )

I sleep mine if I have lots of tabs open (I never bookmark stuff coz I know I won't go back to it, just leave it open) but otherwise I shut it down. But that's because it's a laptop, leaving it plugged in all the time does/has kinda ruined my battery. If I had a desktop I'd probably still shut it down at night mostly unless I was downloading stuff.

Turning off your PC never damages it more than leaving it on unless you have a virus that activates on boot. Most computers these days don't need to be restarted often, but you should at least turn it off or restart it once every couple weeks.

I have not turn mine off for 5 years and counting. (And if I powered it down I would have too wait for a nurse or someone too come by when I was awake and ask them to turn it on. This way I have it always available.)And my old computers the same thing...only went off when there was a loss of electricity that was longer then the backup power supply. Plus I also heard re-starting the PC damages it more than leaving it on. Now I do occasionally do a restart 2-3 year after a scan and defrag but do not turn it off.

Leaving whatever device on for hours and hours, to do absolutely nothing, it's just a waste (no matter how small) and also pretty dumb IMO...
I feel already lazy for not turning off the wireless every night, leaving the entire PC on is out of the question, unless i have some really urgent download.

I only turn it off when I know I'll be gone for at least 2 days. Otherwise, I put it on sleep when I go to sleep.
