While it's true that turning your PC on and off damages it, the effect is negligible that it'll take decades for it to break.

I turn it off when I'm not going to be using it for a long time. That story about restarting it doing more damage than leaving it on is an old story. Sure, if you're restarting it every few minutes, it might wear out the PSU faster, but if its not being used for a while, its fine to turn it, and it saves electricity. Also, PCs need to be restarted every now and again, leaving it on for a few days at a time can cause it to slow down.

I've only had one HDD go out on me and it was on a computer that I shut down nightly.
And honestly, the computer uses barely any electricity compared to AC. My bill during spring and fall for electricity is around $30, in summer it's been over $100, only difference in usage is the AC running. And I have a work and personal computer at that.

Lifespan of HDDs is calculated by two values - the amount of start-stop cycles and running hours. Exceeding either would lead to a potential failure. So spinning it up and down is not any better for your HDD than running it 24/7, usually worse due to the higher stress caused.

I dont know if it's better to leave it on or turn it off every time I go to bed.
I heard re-starting the PC damages it more than leaving it on for some hours, but I would like to hear what you usually do.
