For windows, now that Winamp is gone forever... what is your suggestion of a good media player (only audio, i don't care for video integration)

Another vote for AIMP here. I keep foobar2000 only for playing DVD-Audio disks, otherwise I'm a full-time AIMP user. Switched from Winamp to it a long time ago. The only nice feature of Winamp that it doesn't have is auto-tagging mp3 files using CDDB info.

I've used AIMP and now I'm using foobar, but both are very good. Depends what you want, lightweight foobar or AIMP for more comfortbale interface (foobar is a bit... raw)

Why would anyone still use Winamp in the first place? It stopped being any good somewhere at 3.0 version (which was more than 10 years ago). Install AIMP and start felling like a fully fledged human being at last.

The Lite version of Winamp has always been pretty much the same as the older versions as far as I remember, they just manage to hide it fairly well (Winamp.com > "Media Players" > "Features" > "Download Now" row). The only extraneous thing it includes (IMO) is the Winamp Agent which I just deselect in the installation dialogs.

With that said I've been trying out AIMP the last few weeks and it's nice too, though basically the same thing. I can't really see any difference in speed/performance TBH.

  1. http://www.change.org/en-AU/petitions/save-winamp
And 2, Winamp wont be gone forever, whether or not AOL release the source code someone will find a way to update it or keep it alive. Hypothetically one may put winamp into a rar and upload it to multiple sites for anyone wanting it after the website is shutdown. Along with many of the more popular addons. Shoutcast is probably a different story though.

Umm..

VLC sucks. Had problems with videos and video seeking is slow.
I use PotPlayer( KMPlayer Reloaded ). Tons of customizations.

If you want something lightweight go CCCP. It has MPC included.

I used to have some issues with VLC but after investing some time into learning how to customize it you can overcome with issues. I'm not a huge fan of CCCP, but it is also a better option than many other media players.

foobar2k plz

Very customizable + there are tons of components that can improve the audio and experience. Easily scriptable too for custom things. Like I can load 3 different playlist (Vocaloid + anime, Dubstep, Nightcore) and foobar can fairly randomize the songs on those 3 playlist. 33% chance for each playlist

I'd still recommend WinAMP. The fact that it's no longer under development doesn't mean you have to abandon it immediately...

Can't be bothered with software that's no longer updated, for me at least. I like Winamp, but once the development stops, sooner or later I have to move on. Why waiting until later if you can do it as soon as possible?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Winamp hasn't really been updated for at least half a decade.

It plays mp3 files. That's all there is to it.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

One of the main reasons for me to stick with WinAMP as well.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

True. Winamp simply hasn't needed updates, so as long as you don't end up needing to download the installer again you can just keep on using it for years.

That said, AIMP3 is basically Winamp but better in every way, so it's a good time to give that a try.

That's kinda ridiculous reasoning. It's not like it's an OS or so with security holes that you'd need to worry about updates for, like Windows XP, for example. I've used Winamp 2.95 since I was 12 (29 now), and it serves me just fine. Always has.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

As I said, not interested with something no longer updated. Security holes or not. You have your reasoning, I have mine. It's not even something arguable.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Umm, lol? Of course it's arguable. By very definition, if your decision has reasoning to it, then it must be reasonably arguable, i.e. logically sound, backed by fact. Anyway, I haven't stated any of my reasoning, but neither have you, so why the defensive attitude? I gave a quite valid reason why perhaps your attitude towards programs that are no longer updated might be a bit baseless - if you wanted to reply so bad, why not just explain why you have that attitude? What makes you care whether or not a copy of a media player has (semi-)regular updates, insofar as deciding whether or not to use it?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Because it's for myself. I never like myself saying anything that affects me being challenged with other people. You keep your preferences, I keep mine. End of story.

IF I were to recommend like that FOR other people, you have every right to question it. Clear enough for you?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

...? "Right to question it"? Wow, it's not something hugely dramatic we're discussing here man, we're not talking about something very personal like a sexual preference that there's an ostensible reason to be so defensive over.. Why the enormously recalcitrant stance? It's kinda frustrating, because now I am genuinely interested / curious why you'd care about updates for a media player. Maybe I'll even learn something new from your reasoning? You know, there's more to discussion / conversation than just butting heads and trying to see who's right.. I am always interested in other peoples' thought processes, aside from the general (and genuine) curiosity for curiosity's sake, I always figure there's an opportunity to learn something new in it for both parties, even if that something is only knowing each other a little better.

So please, without feeling like you have to defend yourself, explain to me what your thoughts are, purely because I really am curious now, not trying to challenge you in any way.

AIMP3 and use the Winamp skin for it. So far so good me likey.

AIMP3 has global hotkeys (important feature for me), same mod skin as Winamp's basic skin (very important) and free (mega important), small memory footprint (not important, but plus factor). Good Winamp replacement thus far.

1 decade ago

No. MP3 is a lossy format, if you want high quality, you should use only lossless formats (Flac, Ape, Cue+Img etc).
Oh, and I'm personally using some exotic formats, like mini2sf (Nintendo DS music format) and psf (Sony PlayStation music format). For example I'm listening to music from Phoenix Wright:

  • I find mp3 to have the same sound as any others...
  • Most commom, easiest to find in this form...

Sure, if we go for hi-fi sound experience we should use those you listed above, but as I understand, OP just wanted to listen music, nothing special...

But I got your point :)

Uhm... MP3 is a compressed format that ditches most of the normally 'unnoticed' sounds. If you have (close to) absolute hearing like me, then you will notice that MP3 offers less music than the original it was taken from. Even when you rip the original on 320bps.

Trust me, you don't. I hear every false note played/sung on live concerts - even those that are off by only so little that everyone tells it's good. At times it's very damn annoying to have (close to) absolute hearing ;-)

I don't understand all these people that are jumping off Winamp suddenly just because it's "no longer under development".

I haven't updated Winamp in something like five years, why would I have to? It does what it needs to--plays music--with no issues.

Unless some new format takes off and becomes a big deal and suddenly Winamp can't play music--which is highly unlikely because look at how far .ogg has come in the personal media library scene in all the years it has desperately been trying to replace .mp3--I don't see any reason to stop using it, regardless of whether or not AOL continues to pretend like they're still developing it.
