https://blog.humblebundle.com/2022/01/11/humble-choice-is-leveling-up/

It seems like we can't go one month without having some sort of shake up here. This time the messaging is even more vague, especially for the those still on the Classic plan.

"Beginning February 1, we’ll be offering just one plan that gets you ALL of the games we’ve picked out for the month for only $11.99 USD (regional pricing may vary). No more limiting which games you want from the bunch—every month, every game is yours to own forever."

Why is this service still even called Humble Choice when there hasn't been any choice involved in over a year? I've very confused on how this will affect my prepaid year of the Classic plan, so if anyone has any information that could shed some light on this new change I would appreciate it.

Edit: https://support.humblebundle.com/hc/en-us/articles/4411127626139
There is an FAQ that looked like it just had more word-y versions of the same info, but at the bottom it does go over the plan changes, and essentially says the Classic plan will be discontinued:

"All members, excluding Lite plans, will be moved to the new standard $11.99 (USD) plan or annual equivalent (region pricing may vary).

Classic - You will continue to pay $11.99 (USD), receive all games every month, and enjoy all benefits of a Humble Choice membership. Classic members will still continue to be billed in USD only.
Premium - With tiers going away, Premium members will see the base price reduced to $11.99 (USD). You will receive all games every month and continue to enjoy all of the perks of Humble Choice.
Basic - Basic members will see their price reduced to $11.99 (USD) and will now receive all games and perks!
Lite - Due to the price changes and collapsing of Choice tiers, members with a Lite plan will have their current membership canceled to avoid any issues with an increased cost. Lite members will have the option to purchase Humble Choice at the $11.99 (USD) price to receive great games and perks!"

Are you in favor of Humble "choice"?

Yes, I support the monthly games bundle (in theory or practice).
No, I do not like Humble's subscription service.

It means they finally understand that they are idiots... With the mess of coupons, don't go, please don't pause and introductionary offers...

And hey punishing people is fun by removing a discount...

Oh and everyone else has a launcher, we must have one too. After all we are now big boy publishers...

I guess they found out no one was buying Choice for $20. What I hope is that they stop with all those coupons and discounts and instead focus on bundles that are worth their full price. The problem with Choice at $20 is that the quality wasn't there to justify that high price for most months, most have been only worthy for classic subs or using coupons.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree that that coupons/mega promotions are a way to fall. I mean of course everyone like to buy it on a good discount but it encourage ppl to pause or cancel at purpose or even bend the rules.
But the final effect is lower and lower quality of bundles (as average bundle price is lower). Also ppl who bought bundle for a lower price are less likely to pay full price again in a future. And these who paid full price will sooner or later cancel it if the price is too high comparing to lower and lower quality of bundles.

Probably HB problem is that they had too low subscribers and want to have more, but this way of selling is rather stupid and will be always unsuccessful after some time. They set too hight price like $20 and then they are selling it for a $6 :)... In my opinion better to set price more realistically and try to maintain good content.

That is clearly worse.

So... you never purchase games outside of bundles? If I do, yes, I get them mostly from Steam directly... which is not ideal if you want a game for GA purpose. When I bought Resident Evil 7 for the Holiday Event, I did shop around and HB with that 20% additional discount had the best price so, yeah, I bought a key from them. Having 20% off was a nice incentive... 10%? Not so much.

of course i have but 20% is not enough of a discount for me anyway from Steam i try to wait for around 75% plus and they have been more than generous to let people pause at all i can't think of many things that you can pay for up front and pause as and when you like

for me i never really like most of the aaa games never liked final fantasy or resident evil (played 5 which i hear is one of the worst) or gta , etc... mostly into indie games in which humble mostly have in choices or bundles

You get (up too) 20% off sale prices too. So a game regularly priced $19.99 on sale for $4.99 could become $3.99. That extra discount has made me make a few purchases at Humble, but without it I likely won't.

no. I was talking about legit retailers like gamersgate or gamesplanet or greenmangaming... those all have 100% legal keys from developers and publishers. There's nothing gray about those and there's plenty more shops like that besides the ones I listed.
Problems start when you delve into "marketplaces" like g2a or kinguin or anything else that let's you as a person sell stuff there. sure, most of those are probably people just selling off their spare keys they got in bundles as such, but some sell keys they've bought using stolen credit card information and such and there's where the problems start...

It's kinda worse for them though. The 20% discount was getting them sales they won't be getting anymore.

I give them 6 months to go back on that. Once they see how it impacts their store sales, they'll rush back to previous system and cancel the skip a month altogether instead.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what is the benefit of paying in USD if you live outside of the US? More favourable conversion rate?

possibly. for instance some shops maybe even humble in the past, I'm not sure treat 1USD = 1EUR and since they usually don't bother with "lesser" currencies for me living with PLN they'd only offer payment in EUR so I'd end up paying roughly 12% more. 1USD = 4PLN vs 1EUR = 4,54PLN as for quick google convert rn, but they usually stay at a similar difference
So yeah, if I can't get billed in PLN I'd rather pay in USD thank you very much...

Ultimately we'll have to see if it changes the quality and quantity of games. If you get a better or worse deal seems to be highly regional. If you're from Europe you'll get a slightly lower price on the bundle (not enough to get excited about, but hey, better than nothing!) though the way store discounts work is getting a bit worse.

Sorry for perhaps being oblivious, but I'm not sure how this is worse for anyone? From my understanding the program is being reverted back to the old Humble Monthly, with the main difference being that we now know the games upfront. And you can still pause, it's just called 'skip' now. They're just making it a level playing field again.

It'll even make splitting on GroupBuys easier: no more lying about what tier people are on. 😅 (Yes, that's actually a thing.)

Mainly it is another middle finger to any remaining Classic plan subscribers. After months of giving discounts to only new or cancelling subs they are just taking away the classic plan completely. Loyal customers be damned.
Not that it matters if you were a classic subscriber or not especially with the plans going away, it just feels bad when a company treats their customers like this.

Most companies do special offers for new customers, (e.g. trials, discounts).
I paid $12 for Monthly, I pay $12 for Choice and I will pay $12 after this change (special offers excluded). Not being damned, but also not being privileged.
The only disadvantage I see for now is the store discount reset.

Hi,
you compare apples with peas.

1&1 give you, from the begin, a contract with the prices listed for year 1 and year 2 + all following (and as far as i know you can't end the contract before the end of year 2).
They don't take 16€/month in year 1 and 32€/month in year 2 and then give a part of the customers the half price with coupons and a other part not, same for other reductions like -2€, -1€ etc.. And not to forget, they would not repeat that then all the time.

Today https://dsl.1und1.de/dsl-tarife and UnityMedia are giving first 10 months for free to new subscribers, it's a similar practice to what Humble is doing (giving better deals to new customers)

Not that I agree with the practice, just that these companies do this.

My contract was 4 years ago, I paid 16€ every month for a year and 32€ every month after that, I could cancel anytime with 3 month notice because I bought the router from them.

Quit for some time like you plan to do and then start it again (with new customer rules).
And like spudette described, it's similar with 1&1, Telekom and others. You usually quit as soon as you can (mostly 2 years) and then get better offers again, because they want to keep you. Or if the offers are still not good enough, you let it end. Afterwards you are a new customer for them again and gain from those discounts.
Now if you don't do that and pay the default price for years.. welp, that's where they earn their money. Not nice, but it's the way it is.

Classic is always best, so why discount? Classic is cream on cream, best price. And if you want commoner to buy your product, you need show him, he get better price as elite. It is everywhere. It is standart marketing move.

And you didnt need to cancel your Classic. I have coupon and still on Classic. I just have a friends I can ask for buy me a coupon and Ill give him cash. If you dont have friends, stop playing games and gou out. It was easy solution. That why Classic is still elite group. Because we can pause or ask friends and find way to have your cake and eat it. Those who think are better than commoners.

I felt the same. They promised me... I think more games to choose or full bundle? for $12. And they kept it. The fact that someone else got a similarly good deal - good for them, good for us, customers! The deals for new customers were easy to abuse if someone made new account after new account, but they didn't really make my position worse.

I really wonder how many people paid $20, $12 or some discount-price for the bundles in each month. It's even possible that his simplification will have a profit on HB's side at the end. Maybe even calming people down who were so vocal about being classic subscribers, partners and whatnot and kept demanding discounts.

Now we know what we buy, the price stays the same or even gets a bit cheaper for some, and a lot of headache is removed from the system IMO.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I already thought something like this might happen when they started tiered choice bundles..
Already then it felt like people where not really happy with all the games for $12 so why would anyone get less games for the same price....

But they couldn't outright backtrack on their decision as that would look foolish.... that`s why they started doing endless discounts which brought every tier down to classic anyway .... Fictively they still had the $20 tier but did many people actually had to buy that one ? ... And everyone always got all of the games.. so choice was only in the name.

The more and more ridiculous discounts they offered ($6 for 6 months etc) hinted at the low sales IMO. So they did the only thing that might not bring much attention to them admitting defeat - backtrack slowly to Humble Monthly... Getting back to single price while trying to market is as something unique ....

As far as what classic users gets from it (feel free to correct me if I have misunderstood this)-

Classic members will still continue to be billed in USD only

Seeing how this is specifically mentioned only for classic subscribers, this might be better for some... I for one hate when the price is same in $ and EUR. At least this way it's the same "value" at least looking at it money wise ... You can bring up VAT as much as you like, I still don't think it's fair for a bundle to cost $10 and 10 EUR for the same games.

Well at least they're cutting through the BS of discounts available to only certain plans, and then the different plans topping out at $20.

Since they're not charging $20 anymore and are likely going to only give 10 games, it does make me concerned that the perceived game selection/quality will decrease.

I'm not particularly thrilled about them going from DRM free downloads to a proprietary app, but using the trove for me was more of a doomsday scenario if the internet got knocked out for me or something.

well rather than "Classic plan discontinued officially" it's more of a "Classic plan now a default and only option"
it's basically back to standard monthly like we had bafore december 2019...

I mean, sure, but officially it is all discontinued.

oficially, sure. what I'm getting at is that what you put on the title seems like journalistic fearmongering to me. honestly I only clicked on this discussion 'cause I was affraid that humble is gonna try to rip me off more for less games (again)...
man, with titlewriting skills like that some news outlets might be really eager to hire you :D

I hope there will be an option for classic subscribers to be billed in regional currency without loosing the 20% store discount.
Because to me it seems like the only option for people where 12 USD is more than the equivalent regional price is to cancel and resub but loose the 20% store discount in the process.

It might also just be very deliberate...

From faq

Why am I billed in $ (USD) when I live in a supported area for regional pricing?

If you are billed in USD, then one of three things are happening:

If you are on a Classic plan, this can only be billed in USD. On February 1st, if you are a Classic member, you will still continue to be billed in USD. You can use the link here to adjust your membership to convert to a standard membership, which will take region pricing into account.

Does that mean that with this change anyone staying on the Classic plan will pay the converted ~€10.50 instead of the regionally priced €9.99? 🤔

Meh, I could live with that.

"staying on the Classic plan" there is no more classic plan, nothing is going to be converted.

Those on classic plans all pay USD$12 converted from there regional currency rather than paying regional pricing. Going forward they're saying those on classic will still carry on paying the USD$12 ("Classic - You will continue to pay $11.99 (USD),"). With the changes meaning no real benefit staying on classic plan for some it may be cheaper to switch to the regional pricing but at the moment that doesn't seem an option so would be forcing people to cancel and resub and loose their 20% store discount.
I could maybe save £1 ($12 = ~£9, regional price £8) 11%.

Thanks was looking for that but unfortunately the link is no help/doesn't work and doesn't seem to be option to switch from classic plan, just choice of monthly or annual billing cycle

I read the FAQ and I don't know how I missed that even though I definitely read it. Maybe I should go to bed now...
Sorry but thanks for clearing that up.

EDIT: And yeah, the link doesn't seem to work just yet.

I believe you can just change your plan without losing the discount.

Can't say I care much. I'm still living off the prepaid year I bought like 2 or 3 years ago, I can't even remember. The bundles have largely been so bad I keep skipping unless I forget to do it in time. When I finally do run out of monthly credits I don't plan to renew it whatever the price.

Hmm, well I'm not opposed to it for now. I sure hope the quality will get better, but who knows. I'll reserve my judgment once I see what they have in store. The part about platforms concerned me for a bit, but I think they know majority of their customers use Steam so I hope we'll have Steam available for most (if not all) games still. Or even better, multiple choices on each game on which platform we want it for. That would be nice.

The discount thing is a bit sad for people who pause (aka me lmao), sure, but honestly I thought "at least loyal customers aren't going to get shafted now I guess" lol. It's reasonable enough at least, unlike many of their previous decisions. It makes sense they wouldn't want to give me a discount if all I do is pause.

Resetting to the lowest tier with just one skip might be a bit extreme though... Imagine being subscribed for a year and skipping and losing a whole 10% lol. I wish they could do like a point system instead, like +1 per month subscribed and -1 per skip or something like that... oh well. Maybe if enough people suggested it we can make it happen, like the charity sliders lol

thankfully I didn't renew my classic plan this month (I decided to pause because I didn't want to buy that crappy bundle).

As long as they keep the pause feature they could do whatever they want and I couldn't care less. Although I'm not a fan of switching from DRM-free Trove to another useless client.

They are not entirely getting rid of the Trove. It's being replaced with the "Vault", and those games will still be DRM-free. This will be separate from the app-only games that you can only play while subscribed. Sounds like you will need their app to download them, though (rather than directly off their website).

I believe it will only be Humble's published games you'll need the app for. But it's too early to know what's gonna happen exactly.

As someone who has been regretting not getting on the Classic bandwagon when I had a chance since the day Monthly became Choice... this is great news. I did enjoyed the $8.34 CAD for 6 month deal until last November, the "normal" price tag of $25 CAD just because I'm not on Classic is ridiculous to me, and I've been paused since my offer ended.

Now hopefully this decision was taken because only Classic subscribers were sticking around and everyone else didn't bother paying so much. This would mean the change is in favour of gaining a greater number of subscribers and making a larger profit, which in turns might mean the level of quality of bundles will remain, if not increase. On the other hand, if this decision means a loss of profit due to non-Classic subscribers no longer paying such a high fee, it could mean they plan on their bundles having less value to reflect that change in price... hopefully that is not the case.

Ähm.... i seen hundreds of people that paid much lesser as the classic plan costs, since, at least, 1 year.
All the time the $6 deals for 6 months, 2x in a row for the most ones, -$4, -$2, $1 for 1 month etc..

This kick in the nuts for the honest classic subscribers were the reason why i paused a few days ago the first time since years. And all this + the new system (the game quality will not go magically up) are now the reason why i jump off the train, as soon as my leftover (1 month) are used.

One customer lesser.

all this + the new system

I can agree about the unfair advantage new subscribers got (6 month at $x.xx etc) when Classic subscribers didn't, but why is the new system a problem for Classic subscribers? You get the same thing as everyone else, aside from the exclusivity of being offered a better deal over other people who missed the train for Classic.

In the end the classics subs got fucked the last 1 year and for holding onto the "we have maybe a advantage from the higher price in the future" we get now a big "fuck you" and the same as the rest that jumped on and off, had $6 deals for a year etc..

No information when they sold the christmas yearly sub.

The -20% store discount are gone as soon as you pause one time, then you start with -10%.

You don't know something about the games that will now come up but i assume the quality will go down to before because lesser subscribers
Trove gone, a other client up (i assume with lesser games as trove)

And for me was a few days ago a limit reached and the new system is only the last drop to say "now they get the reward for that behavior of, at least, the last year (= one sub lesser)" and "i am happy that i don't bought the $99/year".

I have so much games that i don't need theirs anymore.
Money saved and nothing to be in a bad mood anymore.

Not particularly happy about the whole "reset your discount if you pause" thing. Aside from that, I'm reserving judgement until I actually see what they do. No point in getting worked up over speculation.

So all in all everyone will get classic and classic did cost 11$ a month when you paid it for a year (132$) now it will cost 12$ a month.

I think they will just earn more on classic subscribers and people who didn't want to subscribe to other plans but also could not get classic because of changes in last 2 years.

I rarely buy from Humble Store, the 20% is nice but it's not going to influence a skip or not. That said, it does seem like they're trying to secure a base amount of buyers per month by discouraging skipping over various methods.

So Humble Monthly changed into Humble Choice to change back into Humble Monthly?
Since all for $12 was the exact thing they offered before this choice shenanigans...

My take: getting rid of the tiers = good.

Losing your 20% discount if you pause / skip a month = shitty.

Putting all the DRM free Trove games behind (yet another) Windows only launcher screwing over Linux users = really shitty
