https://blog.humblebundle.com/2022/01/11/humble-choice-is-leveling-up/

It seems like we can't go one month without having some sort of shake up here. This time the messaging is even more vague, especially for the those still on the Classic plan.

"Beginning February 1, we’ll be offering just one plan that gets you ALL of the games we’ve picked out for the month for only $11.99 USD (regional pricing may vary). No more limiting which games you want from the bunch—every month, every game is yours to own forever."

Why is this service still even called Humble Choice when there hasn't been any choice involved in over a year? I've very confused on how this will affect my prepaid year of the Classic plan, so if anyone has any information that could shed some light on this new change I would appreciate it.

Edit: https://support.humblebundle.com/hc/en-us/articles/4411127626139
There is an FAQ that looked like it just had more word-y versions of the same info, but at the bottom it does go over the plan changes, and essentially says the Classic plan will be discontinued:

"All members, excluding Lite plans, will be moved to the new standard $11.99 (USD) plan or annual equivalent (region pricing may vary).

Classic - You will continue to pay $11.99 (USD), receive all games every month, and enjoy all benefits of a Humble Choice membership. Classic members will still continue to be billed in USD only.
Premium - With tiers going away, Premium members will see the base price reduced to $11.99 (USD). You will receive all games every month and continue to enjoy all of the perks of Humble Choice.
Basic - Basic members will see their price reduced to $11.99 (USD) and will now receive all games and perks!
Lite - Due to the price changes and collapsing of Choice tiers, members with a Lite plan will have their current membership canceled to avoid any issues with an increased cost. Lite members will have the option to purchase Humble Choice at the $11.99 (USD) price to receive great games and perks!"

Are you in favor of Humble "choice"?

View Results
Yes, I support the monthly games bundle (in theory or practice).
No, I do not like Humble's subscription service.

[Wall Of Text ON]
the only thing i can say,but this is valid only for me,everyone has different needs&taste,
xbox game pass ultimate for PC (with the cloud gaming free too) especially if when at 1$ with new account discount price, most of time it's a better deal for me than HC and i don't care that XGP it's a "Rent" while instead HC is your own keys... it's ok for me to play only 1 month new games and then say bye to it for most of times especially if these is low quality games as offered in some recents hc,
xgp has hundreds of games to play and new games added most of time is very good, and it make the humble choice be for me nosense especially when they put only crap games on it.
Maybe i just get HC when have bundles with high quality\values games like the spyro\crash\ww2 bundle that is good deal for me to get.
Also sometimes i feel HC can have been the xbox game pass for PC before that xgp was created, but who manage it evidently was not fast enough to take advantage of their opportunity so then microsoft\xbox take that place\slice of market.
if instead of give 1 Good game and 11 crap games, they has given 12 Good games since start (before thatxgp was created) probabily right now they have + subscriptions and maybe xgp don't exist at all too (or can't rival hc) vice versa now we have the opposite situation.
The wrong in my opinion is that they not concentrate in quality so,they try to act like they is super intelligent and other is stupid, try to use 1 good game and give garbage games attached to it,so people understand this and just not buy\not subscribe, this will not go to work in long terms.
Must to give 10 quality games if want people subscribe, and right now XGP offer 100+ games so i'm not sure the 10 will go to work too, also if is OwnLicensevsRent is not worth it.
Who care to buy something when you can play it for 1$
without to talk about 99% games that they give in the HC most of time after 6 months is give free on Epic free games week or after 1-2 week get giant discount 80\90% on steam or go to be in XGP..
So why people must to buy,for play it 1 month before when 1 month or 5 after can play it free...no reason.bah.
This what i feel as a gamer, then i not care about investors\publishers and all these stuffs,up to them...
me as a customer\gamer must to see what is good for me to buy\subscribe,and if is not good i not buy, dot.
Also to me i feel the hc team looks arrogant, because a lot of time people complain in pubblic about their crap games, but then always there is anonymous\new account come say "oooh you it's not the target of their campaign marketing" "oooh no no this very good games" etc.. all fake reply lies...
maybe if they instead of reply like to be in king castle, step down from crown chair and listen people at this moment the service has not become this crap.
if you offer a service but then there is Thousand and thousand of people that write\post\comment\reply "i skip\pause" every time, maybe it's mean something? maybe who write games is not good is true? instead of ignore info use it.
Only in some latest of their choice i has need give away around 20 of their games here at SG,because only to see them in image or trailer i feel Vomit...
Witcher 3 it's a game,God of War it's a game,Halo infinite it's a game,Zelda it's a game... this is games... and i would be happy pay\buy..
But what HC give? what games is that they give?.. bah
i think if trow them at rubbish even the rubbish not want it because is disgusted
ok bye i go play some Real games, waste 5 min of my life in this HC rant for nothing.

My feeling, for a long time, Humble wants to become a monthly subscription like Game Pass. Just like every other company in the world, why sell games for someone else's platform once when you can collect monthly payments forever. Publishers probably would prefer this instead of dumping thousands of cheap steam keys into the grey market anyway. I imagine if the humble launcher thing sees any significant number of users we'll eventually see the "bundle" part disappear and just have "Access to 100+ games every month in the humble launcher!".

Here's the kicker:

What store discount percent will I receive when these changes take place?

All active members of Humble Choice will receive up to a 20% discount on the Humble Store when the changes go live on February 1st. All new members will receive up to a 10% discount on the Humble Store, with a growing discount rate based on consecutive months unlocked, as seen below:
Consecutive Months Discount %
1 - 2 10%
3 - 5 15%
6 - 11 17%
12+ 20%

The stacking discount will reset back to 10% when skipping a month or canceling your Humble Choice membership.

See also https://support.humblebundle.com/hc/en-us/articles/4413091652763

What can I find in the Humble app?

The Humble Games Collection: A growing number of Humble Games published titles are available with an active Choice membership through the Humble app.

The Vault: The Vault will include over 50 Humble Original Games. Once downloaded, these games can be kept forever regardless of Choice Membership status.

So Trove gets renamed Vault

Slightly tempted to switch from classic to the new one for the regional pricing. Not a huge difference, but it does add up over time.

The annual plan which I am on (in the USA) cost me $132 and I renewed it just a few months ago. The current pricing says a 12 month plan will cost $129.
If it's cheaper I'll switch too, not sure what the cause for the price change is though, kinda been feeling ripped off as a classic subscriber for months now.

For me 20% is not even worth considering. If it was at least up to 50%, but 20%? it's the smallest discount in any store.

I think it's only good for people buying newer $60 games for 20% off, but yeah other than that it's not really worth keeping classic for just that 'perk', although I could see them capping the discount on new games or something ridiculous.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But those newer games have often about 20% off on release. So what's the point? Also $60 games with 20% off are still expensive. I would rather wait till the real discount. Either given for Humble Choice, or at least 50%, if not 80/90%. 20% is literally not an off at all. It's regular price at this point, because this is regular discount everywhere.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Keep in mind this 20% discount stacks with any on-going discount, and it also works with BYOB offers. For example, I got Celeste for 4€ recently, because the game was 75% off, which brings it to 5€, plus the 20% from Choice bringing it down to 4€. So it's a very nice extra. Yeah, not enough to make Choice worth only for the discount.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But that's the thing. It stacks multiplicatively, which makes the 20% discount actually less than 20% in the end. Because it's 20% out of 25%, which is literally just 5%. 1 euro discount is not really discount. It's always a bit less, but Humble Bundle rarely have good discounts to begin with. When I compare lowest prices, Humble Store is rarely there.

So, just to be clear. This is positive change? There is no hidden "buts"? I had classic plan, but people who didn't or stopped/not paid for few months could lose it and pay more. So... this is better? And You just get all games now. For the same price. Don't want to be happy, before I confirm everything is great.

Also they should rebrand it again. They did from monthly to Choice. They could or even should change it. I dunno to "Humble Play" or "Humble Hoard" or whatever. Just to adjust. They changed it to Choice, because they changed how it works. So IMO they should change the name again.

The "buts" is they don't have a hard number of games anymore (from previously 10-12 each month). So it could stay the same, or just 4 games this month and 6 games for the next month, nobody knows.

Also they included language in those links that says it will be for multiple storefronts, so prepare for Epic, GoG, etc mixed into bundles, and obviously less games overall.

Well... if they give less keys, of course it will be a scam. But iirc they said "more games". Whatever they meant by that. Everything below 8 games is not really good, but I hope 10 would be standard number of games with no less ever. Also I hope they won't give Epic exclusives or Origin exclusives. If they want to make games for other launchers, it should be a choice where You want to get this game.

When the publisher of a game runs a store/platform, you'll never get a Steam key. So EA, Ubisoft, Epic Games, Rockstar.

I don't remember which key was Origin-only, tbh. But I think i recall it being a Steam game too. But I'm not sure.
Also the non-Steam platform key could be the bonus key. Like, let's say, there are 10 keys in regular basis, and they want to give Origin only key. Make it 11th. Os give a choice of another game, that is on Steam.

Well, let's see. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/scam says scam is

: a fraudulent or deceptive act or operation

They promised that existing user will have a special, lower, price, not available to new users. And then they first made offers with even lesser price, and now they make everyone have the same price. So, they did not fulfill their promise. And if you promise something and don't do it - it's deception. And if it deception (especially to get money, and that's exactly what they did) - that's scam by definition. If you believe it's not a scam - you should learn English.

Also, not "years ago", but I'm keeping it on pause for quite some months, since their policy only getting worse over time. Of course if you think otherwise and actually like their service - sure, keep using it, I don't mind. It does not change the fact that "Classic" plan was a scam though..

not particularly you - but i don't understand the people who say things like "i've paused for a whole year now" like it's something to be proud of - i mean people pay up to $20 (i used to pay £15.99 at one point) and people think they have right to expect things like GTA V, Fall guys and about 10 other £15+ games in the same month for less than about $2 each yet do not moan much at normal bundles (which some times per game are more expensive)

Oh, sure, expecting to get GTA V, that was given away for free recently, in a $20 bundle - that's high hopes. TOO high.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

that was given away for free recently

Moreover, it has gone down to $10~11 a fair bit, and down lower (to around $8~9) several times as well. Plenty of other bundled games in the past have been discounted to $15~20 both before and after the bundles, or in some cases have only ever been available at even higher prices than that; With that in mind, GTA V's discount history is already well within bundle parameters. And as far as anything else? It's a much older game than most that have gone into bundles, with no real special characteristics that would preclude it from bundle inclusion.

Rather, I'm really not seeing any reason at all why it being in a bundle would be special, even without the Epic freebie. It'd be one thing if it was a Final Fantasy game, as very few of those have ever gone below 50% discount and I believe none have ever been in bundles (ignoring SqEnix seasonal mystery boxes), but Rockstar that has had their games in previous bundles. It's also a company that has previously offered its games for free or at steep discount. Add in that Epic freebie, and the age of the game, and it being available in a bundle seems more matter-of-course than a surprise. Which is to say, few people'd be surprised to see it in a bundle, at this point.

Instead of GTA V, a more topical, reasonable example from the same company would be Red Dead Redemption 2. And even there, it'd only be a shock because it's a Rockstar game and their steep discounts/bundles don't happen for a very long time after a game's release. As a 3~4 year old game, it'd otherwise also be a viable bundle candidate.

[This post is just meant to emphasize the valuation of GTA V that is being made, not to address any broader topic.]

I really like that update, it seems fair to me as it was really disappointing in no equality, when some people can pay 6€ per month while some they bill 18€ and let them pray for coupons. I believe setting same fair price for everyone will help humble get back the quality of games which will stop people nonstop complain about choice price. Discount I used only once to buy Control on release day, so considering how rare I shop in humble I won't even notice if I have 0, 10 or 20%.
Nvm, I know some of losers around us would still cry even if they bundle top upcoming AAAs for next year for 1€.

Only thing that I am worried about is new launcher. Completely not interested in that and will me make buy game elsewhere to have them on steam, no matter price.

Well, I am one of these people which when see interesting game on Epic, go on steam and buy it there. Never got into using of GOG, only game I bought on was Gothic series, cause they can give you clear Gothic 2 without datadisc, which steam can't do. Then I bought Dragon age on origin, because it was only option in past. But I really hate having games in different launchers or having to let another launcher to open it when I move it on steam.
So it is only in my mind, even if game is free, I mostly ignore it if it isn't on steam or on cd.

I honestly feel like I have been lied to. I bought the annual premium subscription for the 1st time in December (while they had the $99 promo price, which worked out to be $138.99 CAD for me). When I bought that subscription it advertised 12 games a month, and I was under the impression those would all be Steam keys (idk if they have given other platform keys in the past, or I just misunderstood at the time).

I paused for January for a few reasons:

  1. I can't run Mafia on my setup
  2. There are only 10 games instead of 12
  3. I'm not interested in any of the games offered (including Mafia if I could run it)

Now with these new changes I am getting an unknown number of games each month, of unknown quality, on unknown platforms.

I really hope that there will be some months in the future worth claiming, and I realize everyone has different tastes in games and platforms, but I am deeply concerned that I wasted money and will be presented with less games each month for varying platforms.

I'm kinda on your position a year ago. The only difference is that I'm an old subscripter, so, no wrong expectations. I bought their promo subscription annual thing... However, I started to pause month after month... Twelve months later, I still have ten credits.

I'm sorry to hear that. I did try to do a bit of research to check which games were offered in the past before I subscribed. I found each month had at least 1 or 2 games I was interested in, and thought that I could always giveaway or trade the games that I wasn't interested in.

Hopefully moving forward they keep or improve the quality of the games in the bundle (and don't get worse).
It's kind of a "wait and see" situation right now, and I don't plan on trying to get a refund, but I might be in your shoes in a year.

My guess:
Humble wanted to people stop buying only specific months (so they could show better subscription numbers to their shareholders).
So they changed Humble Monthly to Choice thinking:

  • Everyone will stay on classic not to lose subscription, they may pause - but subscription numbers will still look good to shareholders
  • People buying bundles occasionally - will now have to pay $20 to get the full bundle = more profit from them
  • Because people will be afraid to lose subscription - cheaper games can be given away = reducing cost for Humble = even more profit
  • In conclusion: both more recurring subscribers and more profit

what happened instead was:

  1. The bundles became shitty
  2. People realized there's no point on staying subscribed as "classic" subscribers, as we don't get any good bundles anyway - so started canceling instead of pausing
  3. No one was buying the $20 bundles, as it's not worth the price. You can get the only "good" games in the bundle for $12 (if you want to).
  4. Sure as hell no one was buying the "Lite" tier
  5. Not only profits went down - but the subscription numbers went down as well.
  6. As a desparate attempt to increase subscription numbers, Humble started offering all games first for $12 (same as classic), and next for $6, just so people get back to "subscribers" status.
  7. Which only cause more people to cancel, as they saw they will later get an even better deal they're already paying. So Humble got a bunch of new $6 subscribers, but lost a bunch of $12 subscribers.

So here's where we are now.
So they're rewinding again to cancel all tiers. Cancel the useless Lite/Premium subscriptions. Cancel the $6 per month desperation subscriptions.
And go back to having $12 per month bundles (probably with better quality games, at least at first), with other method attempts to make people stay subscribed:

  1. Store discount
  2. Trove access
  3. Humble Original (Trove 2.0) access

Let's see how it goes...

Why would anyone "be afraid to lose subscription", while being able to pause any number of times?

The question you should be asking is: Why do people need the ability to pause?
And the answer is exactly that: In order to not lose the subscription.

Why people were afraid to lose the subscription in the first place?
Because you would lose the "Classic" subscriber status if you canceled your subscription.

Continuing that logic, why would I be afraid of losing a subscription, if I have everything at my disposal for it NOT to happen?

Full control, no risk... who is afraid in that situation?

My point is you mentioned "keeping subscribers, even if they are passive" basically twice. But once it appeared as the system keeps people in terror, which is not correct at all.

I think you're giving too much emphasis to the grammatical use of the word afraid.
It's not afraid in the sense of fearing for one's life.
It's afraid, in the sense "I won't leave my bike unattended, because I'm afraid someone will steal it".
Of course leaving my bike unattended is my choice, and under my control.
Yet I act the way I do, because I don't want the thing that happens if I don't, to happen.
Hence I'm afraid of it.

If there are nobody there, you are not afraid, right?
If there is someone who swore an oath, that they will steal it when you're not around, you know someone will steal it, right? Because if you don't leave it there, they won't steal it. If you leave it there, you made it get stolen, having total control over the result.

Cancelling the classic plan had a straight up, clear to see, obvious consequence.
I guess someone was torn between skipping and skipping or cancelling, but that's just the FOMO and some laziness talking. There's still nothing to be afraid about one's actions. Especially when one can choose to click ~ 5 times a month, or being afraid to actually face the consequences of their choices.

It's not being afraid to lose a sub, it's being afraid to MAKE A LASTING CHOICE, that may not be in their favor. But as nobody forced a gun to one's head, asking BUY / CANCEL - one was just able to choose a third option, and skip.
HB gave everyone all the tools to effortlessly keep their subscription even without paying, until something went sideways with payments, and someone ignored it for months. And at that point, HB is the last of their worries.

If I leave my bike unattended, in the street, it may get stolen. Doesn't matter if there is anyone there at the moment or not.
So I won't leave my bike unattended in the street, out of fear it would get stolen.
If you don't like the word "fear" I can substitute it with:
I won't leave my bike unattended in the street, out of concern it would get stolen.
I won't leave my bike unattended in the street, out of worry it would get stolen.
I won't leave my bike unattended in the street, out of anxiety it would get stolen.

Sorry, but to be actually constructive:
These examples reflect better on the situation

People tried to avoid ending up their sub being cancelled
People kept focusing on maintaining their subscription
People rather kept skipping month after month, to not to lose a possible deal in the future
It worth the monthly focus to skip, in hopes of a better month
Etc

The discount was an incentive to keep subbed, but with the option to skip a month (compared to the new system, where skipping makes your store discount reset) it's unfair to use the word "afraid" in the context of the bundle's effects. They made it simple and painless to skip, which made unsubscribing pointless to begin with, unless someone really fed up, and cancelled as a last resort.

This is pretty much what happened over the past years. I paused too many times just to keep my subscription. One thing they did right this time (at least they tried to) is treat their most loyal subscripters better than before. However, IMO, they don't seem to hit the right spot, because, most people I know never bought anything on HB Store.

I have classic plan, it's been on perma pause for the last 6 months or so. Glad that they realized that tiers are total load of crap and are removing them. Kinda sad about remove of pause discount, but then again, used it only once for games I was undecided and wanted to wait for a bit. Offer won me over in the end. Still they better up quality of games in bundles if they want people to buy them.

I understand that by canceling my Humble Classic plan, I will forever lose exclusive account status and pricing.

--> I'm now done with HB. :)

That's the ONLY thing that stood out to you?

"All Humble Choice members receive a selection of hand-picked games redeemable via a key for select platforms, when available (Steam, Epic, Origin, GOG, etc.). "

There is always 2-3 decent games and the rest is crap. So it does not matter if you get 7 craps or 8 craps or 9 craps...

I'm just glad that I can cancel my classic plan. I have absolutely no hope for a better bundle.

I have always been wondering if some people were actually paying 20$ for a bundle. I've never seen anyone paying that price.

My only problem with Humble Choice is that 10 games every month is just too many as I don't have time to play them all.
I'd rather they did something like "you can choose 3 games out of 10 for 6 euros or get all 10 for 10 euros."
That being said, the quality of the featured games has declined over the years and I feel I should just let my subscription end and just buy the games I want to play somewhere else.

I doubt that this would work. If they offered a selection of similarly attractive games, people would get upset that they have such limited access.
Far more likely though would be that there are 3-4 or maybe even 5 games standing out, which would get picked by almost everyone. Ultimately this would result in picking 3 out of 4 (or something similar), when Choice becomes too unattractive for the smaller titles.

As long as there is another option to buy more/all, I guess it would be feasible. While I still feel that individual game prices are pretty good in the Monthlies, maybe I would be interested in a "less for less" option. It's easier than trading, or selling the games.
But everything considered, we're back to the simple system of everyone pays same, everyone gets the same. Finally they dropped the silly $20 system, and the abusable coupon system. Maybe this brings them some financial clarity, that hopefully can lead to more consistent bundle quality, but they will never be able to make everyone happy.

sa basically it returned to its roots. Took them long enough to think about that.

I've skimmed through the thread and what Humble said, so I might have missed something, but this just looks plain better than the old Monthly, as they'll not hide what games will be in the bundle.

They said they'll have an app for windows PC. I wonder what happens to Mac and Linux users then. Do we lose access to the vault?

I've honestly never looked at the Trove games. Did they have Linux and Mac files too?

Yep. It's been confirmed that mac and linux users will lose access to the DRM-free stuff. They sent an email saying that we should download anything we want to keep before Jan 31.

Funny thing, it's not even DRM-free anymore if you have to download games using an app.

Didn't go through all the replies here, but the "Choice" became a different kind of Choice, from user's to Humble's side. Humble chooses, a man obeys takes.
As I subscribed only about 2 times, which offered like 90% discount of the games I was willing to pay for, I'll keep my arms crossed and see.

Totally agree, "choice" never meant what it was supposed to mean.
