Hello Steamgifts! I'm having an issue with my computer and I think maybe the community here can help me. I'll try to explain it.

When I turn my computer on, the computer turns on nicely, but the monitor doesn't. So I have to turn off the computer, plug off the energy switch back in the computer case, disconnect the hdmi cable, connect it again, turn on the energy switch again, and try. If it doesn't work, I try again. And again. Finally, when I see the windows logo, I can breath again.

I think it's not caused by the monitor, but this is just a guess. I know the computer is turned on because If I unplug my Xbox controller, I can hear the "disconnected usb" windows sound.

I tried:

  • Replacing the HDMI cable several times. (didn't work)
  • Connecting the computer to a TV. (didn't work)
  • Cleaning inside the computer (I think I would find it more dirty, but it was surprisingly clean)
  • Restarting without any usb connected (I was desperate, also It didn't work)

I don't have a clue what more can I do. I watch a Youtube tutorial about changing the battery in the motherboard, but I'm not sure if this will help. I've never done that.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for reading!

I have the same problem with one of my monitors. What I do is to disconnect the monitor power cable for one minute, and insert it again. Then it works. I've always thought it was a problem with the monitor though, not the computer (graphics card)?

i dont understand why you plugged off the energy switch just for removing the HDMI cable?

What do you mean monitor is turned off? Is the LED of the monitor on/ green? Does he says something like " No signal" or "Out of range".. or is the monitor complete death..than its not PC related and maybe your power connector cable from the Monitor or monitor itsself

Edit: Just saw: "Connecting the computer to a TV. (didn't work)" Strange should have worked when you have done it right.
Maybe you should plug off the the gpu of the pc and clean the pce connector from the card..could be that the card was not fit in correct in the pce slot.. or test the gpu or monitor on a different system to be sure what really causes the trouble.

I plugged off the energy switch not for removing the hdmi cable, just in case the computer are having issues for something related to the electricity. Maybe this is not necessary or even stupid, but I have no idea so I'm tryng different things.

The monitor is turned on, but it doesn't display the bios or windows. Just the logo, Then, it turns black and yes, it says "No signal". I forgot to mention that, my mistake. The led is blue when it's working nicely, when not it turns orange.

When this his happening and I disconnect the HDMI and put it again in a TV, the TV also says something like that: "Not signal" or "Not connected" or something similar. If it's working on the TV and I connect the HDMI to the monitor, it's also working in the monitor.

I'll search how to plug off the gpu and cleaning it. Thank you very much!

its actually very easy to unplug it..just dont use violence and at the end of the port on the motherboard there is a plastic nose you have to press to release the gpu from the port... looks like all you mentioned on this thread its your gpu. so maybe cleaning or the cables from the psu to the gpu are not complete inside the card.
its happens sometimes when i build systems that the gpu is not completely inside the port..so before you buy anything new just try this :)

As for me, your problem is in your VGA, because You have a problem in two different display devices. I suggest you ask for help in brand service center, because if you are not an expert in electronic, you can't fix your problem yourself. Well, also you can use another type of connection (DVI for example) if your monitor and VGA has it. And, of course, try to reinstall VGA driver.

Youve tried severeal things, so I can just give you a few tips:

  • Be sure, that youve connected your Monitor to the correct Output. Some Cards wants you to connect HDMI 1, not HDMI 2 or so
  • Does your CPU have an internal graphic? remove your GPU and try it to start this way.
  • Reset the CMOS

You mentioned plugging it into a TV didn't work, perhaps try your other port?
What could be the problem is that or the port isn't working right OR your graphics card is screwed, so perhaps try plugging the screen into your motherboard , if that works then your graphics card is fried.

If the monitor turns on but it says "No signal" maybe you have to switch the input in the monitor. It happened to me something similar. When the computer went into suspension for not using it for some minutes as soon as I restart it, I couldn't see anything but "No signal". The monitor was switching between HDMI and the DisplayPort.

How old is everything, the monitor, motherboard, gpu etc? Helps to know we are dealing with "old shit" or new stuff or even your first time trying this monitor. Don't rule out a broken monitor, mine failed after 2 years of a common problem called blown capacitators.

Best if you could try another monitor on your computer, if the problem remains it's cables or your pc, if it's not then it's your monitor.

Is onboard graphics turned off in bios?

what happens if the computer wakes from sleep instead of booting? Does the problem still happen then?

I had same problem.. the cable was the problem. Try to switch few cables, because i've had problem with 2 cables that was brand new. Definitely the cable problem, trust me!
If it was mobo problem, the system wouldn't boot. If it's VGA problem, the system wouldn't boot.

There are almost all opinions.
Only those that are not.

  1. The monitor may have special switching settings
  2. For laptops and some small motherboards, there may be a switch button

I first came up with that.
Other than that··
There may be a problem with the cable you are using, but if you have other similar cables, you can replace them.

In any case, is the monitor side broken?
Is the PC graphic board broken?
In that regard, it may be quicker to borrow a nearby friend's normal monitor, reconnect and check.
(It is troublesome when there is no borrower.)

Does the monitor light up at all? Maybe your video is burnt. Try connecting to integrated graphics.

Does this happen every time u turn on computer or only once in awhile ?

Cause same thing have happend to me couple of times , and after long google searches i found a solution that worked for me . Turn off the computer and then turn off the monitor not with the on off button but a power switch in the back of it and have it turned off and same time remove all cables from monitor that is connected to computer like vga or hdmi cables . after that a reconnect cables and turn on power switch on back of monitor and turn computer back on and i usually works sometimes i might need to repeat everything again , also sometimes i have to check if windows have messed up my dual monitor settings

This happens to me 50% of the time I turn my PC on, and 100% of the time when waking it up for sleep mode.

I found that unplugging the HDMI cable for 10+ seconds and plugging it back in works, without rebooting.

I know it's a bit silly but, if you already proved that the monitor works fine with another PC and nothing that was already told here works, you can try pressing the [windows + P] keys several times and wait about 5 seconds between each attempt .

It's likely your power supply. I had this happen for years before I was able to diagnose it. Here's my post on Tom's Hardware. See if this is familiar.

I have/had this same issue - my monitor is generally plugged into displayPort, and occasionally the computer decides nope. I then plug the monitor into hdmi instead, and image appears again. More often than not, after a while I can then plug it into displayPort and it will then work normally. This implies my video card is probably a bit temperamental, as I've tried a different brand displayPort cable with the same result.

Could be many things as others have posted. Best place to start is to see where your video cable is plugged into. And are there other options...

Post a picture of the back of your computer showing all wires plugged in and empty ports. If you can, point at or circle the video cable.
Post a 2nd picture of the back of your monitor showing all wires and empty ports.

If your CMOS battery were dying, you would be losing the correct date and time everytime you turned the computer on. So I doubt its a battery issue.

What video card/chipset?
Updated video drivers and correctly set video resolution?
Have you tried using the Monitor on another device to see if the problem is the same?
