I'm in a foreign country. Found a job recently. Hurt my back. More precisely, my spinal cord. Ended up in the hospital, plenty expensive tests, scans etc, monday i have a nuclear scan, in the best case i can come back home in a few days for 6 weeks of antibiotics ( the pouch ones that go straight in your blood, not the pharmacy pills ). Worst case i cannot use my legs anymore, but that should be avoided by an expensive surgery. Of course the joke is that i do not have an insurance, not enough money for even a day at the hospital ( but they still take care of me fortunately, i will have to pay after ). Of course being at the hospital means i don't have the job anymore. Nor for at best the next two months.

I am ok with it, i got trought some shit before so i keep the smile no problem, but given that it's the christmas period, instead of whishing you guys good stuff, i tought i'd tell you about this and instead of whishing good future stuff, appreciate what you have,

good health, familly or friends by your side, enough money for your needs... basic simple things. You might not need the best present this christmas. You might already have it.

Merry Christmas

sorry to hear that, hope your health gets better soon.

If you do not mind me asking, what kind of work did you do before you hurt your back? Was it a heavy lifting job or just a desk job requiring extensive hours of sitting?

I really hope you'll get much better everyday. :)
Thanks for thinking of us even in these hard times for you, pretty much no one understands how good they got it until after something happens.
Keep your spirits up and you won't even need to think about surgery and you'll be home before you even know it!
Merry Christmas :)

Sick so the ( unrealted ) job cannot ( and doesn't have to ) keep me.

So yeah at the exit i will be indebted for years, but i know indeed of the situation in china and know that i am lucky, here i have a good chance of avoiding getting my lower body paralyzed via surgery or antibiotics depending on the gravity which is still being determined, in china i would simply end up paralyzed ( to be honest i know some illegal means of making money that i refuse to use, but if i was forced into that corner, i would probably do it, which would cause some distress to other people, and add one more amateur & faillible criminal to the world, but it would be my choice i think. Whereas if i am indebted with no means of paying back but healthy enough, i can expect after a period of convalescence to find an office job that will allow me to repay my debt even if it takes forever. And since i would have been healed indeed from something important the word debt is not just about money )

well shit, I hope you come out of that OK.

And for your other point, I agree: studies have shown that once you have enough money to cover your basic needs (food/shelter/health), money stops correlating with happiness. So someone who makes just enough to live in reasonable basic comfort would be statistically as happy as a millionaire, assuming all other variables are held constant. Do not lust for money, it will not make you happy.

i hope you hurt your back on the job (or job related injury) so the company should shoulder the expenses.

I am in the philippines, and my kababayan (countrymen) who got hit by the typhoon yolanda are still suffering; so in our own little way; instead of buying extra good food for xmas/newyear. We used that money to help them basic stuff.

Hope you recover

Well tried to kept it simple short and i am a on ( hospital ) drugs right now so yeah sorry for a bit of shortcut,
the point about getting a job recently was just that i had no job for a while before so no money and that given the incident i lost it anyway since the company needs someone who can do the job and i am still a trainee so replaceable in a second without problem ( cannot blame them). The job was fundraising for charities, the injury is not work related, i just moved heavy stuff on my side ( my house. Or at least its content :-) furniture etc, 1 year visa ) so i cannot count on any company to shoulder me. So yeah whatever happens gonna have a nice debt that i will drag for a while. Anyhow, it's not to complain or write the story of my life ( which is fortunately longer and full of equally and worse stuff but also of amazing good stuff that make going trought shit worthwhile. Been homeless at some point years ago, so even now i still enjoy a warm bed and a roof and food even if its expensive hospital stuff. And got a girlfriend by my side 24/7 who refuses to leave despite the security guys and makes the hospital less of a cold hospital and more of a warm place. And i joke with the nurses and doctors so it makes that relation different too ).

Eh now i begin to write too much, TL;DR : responding to a question or two, insisting on enjoying the small everyday stuff you already have.

P.S. Where i have been really stupid thought is in not having a travel insurance, i simply haven't been sick in yeeeears, not even a flu, got a badass body and immunitary system and i train and eat healthy and all and i'd rather spend my little money on a camping place in some far away country or on some charity than on something i tought was a waste of money. Biiiig mistake. Got soooo Angry and ashamed with myself when i heard the news. So that to say, even if you have travelled in most of the world and are a healthy sporty guy and think you gonna be allright, don't be an idiot ( like me ) and take that stupid health travel insurance :-)

TL:DR 2 : insurances might look expensive over the long term, but when they are needed, they ARE needed and you might not see it coming. no matter how well prepared you are ( or think you are ).

Thanks a lot guys for your warmth.

Sorry, I'm gonna be dead serious. If you were joking somehow I don't care. I'd rather be stupid than not try to help.

Hmm... foreign country and no insurance...

Hmm you were from… Union if I remember… am I right?.

And "foreign" means you are outside of EU, am I right? Cause inside all countries signed public health mutual aid agreements… so using hospital help shouldn't be a big problem if you were inside.

Did you try to contact your embassy? Or if there is non and you are from EU you can contact embassy from any EU countries and ask for help. Of course asking for help embassy should be done in only serious matters… so it kinda depends on worst scenario… how high probability is it?

From EU indeed, presently outside indeed.

I did not think about the embassy at all, mainly because i can barely move, thanks a thousand times for that,7

however it was my responsability to get an insurance and i am already in the ( very good ) care of the local hospital. I will therefore investigate the question and wait till monday for the nuclear scan to know how urgent/important it is ( might need or not at all quick surgery thereafter since the longer it waits the bigger the risks for me ). If its not needed or can wait i'll see if i can get back to EU ( knowing that i got seeeerious trouble shifting positions despite serious painkillers, probably not recommended, but who knows ), that would certainly save me from years of huge debts if my health allow it :-))))

Thanks for that !!

Well it is as you said… it was your responsibility... but responsibility of embassy is to protect its citizen no matter of the circumstances. If embassies are often trying to help people accused of a crime… they will probably try to help people in situation similar to yours.

Try calling them, explain your situation and ask for advice what you should do now. That way they will at least know that you exist.

Damn. As someone with spinal cord injuries, I can somewhat sympathize with you. It fucking hurts. I hope things start looking up for you soon.

And yeah, it's true that good health and loved ones are the best Christmas presents one could hope for. They are to be treasured by those fortunate enough to have them. <3

I hope you get better, Vegan. Good luck and hang in there.

You should contact your embassy if you haven't done so already. They should have had similar cases and possibly know how to assist you. There are also some kind of universal health care programs that are usually offered to travellers or people who are abroad in general, though to be honest, I don't know much about those and just heard about them. You might want to do a quick search around the net, in case you find something helpful on those.
