What's the difference between getting a game on Uplay rather than steam? I noticed the price is lower for Uplay games compared to steam games. Let's say for instance RS:Siege is $10 USD cheaper on G2A for the Uplay version.

You have to play it on Uplay :)

But seriously; I haven't had the problems with Uplay that others have, but I've already got a good sized collection on Steam, and I'd rather keep it all in one place.

AND ... you have to run both clients (Steam and Uplay)

You can always close uplay after launching the game (unless you need it for other things)

Like steam you can only close the window not the client. Regardless the client still runs in the background.

I don't want games from Origin or UPlay primarily b/c those are just one company's backlog of games. If you're a hardcore Ubisoft or EA gamer I would, but Steam's 3rd party and has a bigger catalog.

what does catalog have to do with anything, this is about the same game not shopping

plus, the steam version requires uplay installed in the first place...

Actually, Origin and UPlay are NOT just one companies backlog of games. They both have games from other publishers.
For example, they both have The Witcher 3 by CD Projekt.

They don't have many, but it will become more as publishers start seeing a reason to sell through more portals than just Steam.

I'm going to go with Steam being the one with no support, considering it takes anywhere from 2 weeks to 7 years (yes, they actually took 7 years to reply to someone) to receive a generic response not related to your issue.

People would rather have all their games in 1 place and seeing how reliable steam has been for so many years people are just comfortable with steam. People are on edge with Uplay because back in the day if you ever messed with Games for Windows Live and how they ended up shutting it down you would understand a bit better.

they've reduxed it for the better-trust me!it had some ups n downs up until coupla years ago,but I couldn't be happier with their whole netcode n interface n whatnot,as it is now.DL speeds are constant,at least from my geopoint, and they're pretty effin high!

*And on the plus side-if there's a pc service/store,you name it,I've got games there.Desura-yep;Shinyloot(which is,sadly, being shut as we speak)-yerp;GOG-fuck yeah. . .you get the point! So yeah,I don't discriminate origin, uplay, any of them out there. . .as long as I get a good deal,i'm all for it.the more the merrier. . .

Too bad when I login to my account for windows it can't bring up any of my games that I owned. Always comes up with a error. Making a account and signing into games is no problem but downloading games I previously purchased seems non existent

well, that's dildos!didn't try it in a while. . .but did play coupla 'borrowed' games offline with a fake account back at the beginning of the summer (north hemisphere).and never really bought anything over their store, just played MsFlight and AoEO,and GTA IV with Eps.But haven't tried running any of those recently.and what with,AoEO not existing anymore. . .there's less n less breathing room.Dunno what happened to Flight, but i'm guessing you could easily download it from elsewhere, namely its main site,if it's still up.

also, ppl with physical copies most likely wouldn't be affected by this at all. . .not quite sure, but it does seem logical, since you don't have to dl that shizz.

Yeah, steam and its daily server issues....
I have a lot of games on steam, and I'm not going to stop using steam anytime soon, but reliable is not the word I would use to describe Valve right now. Their place as an almost unopposed market leader has made them content. They're not improving, and they're not addressing the issues that they have.

When you buy a game on Uplay, you buying it straight from the publisher. You always pay more when buying through a 3rd party, as they take a cut, which is usually passed on to the consumer.

Except the base price is the same :p. The only actual difference is that you'll pay $60 it you buy from Steam and ubisoft will get 70% of that. And you would pay $60 if you buy from uplay and Ubisoft will get 100%. What puts me sad is that ubisoft got what they wanted, instead of people complaining for a second DRM they just say "buy uplay keys as you would need it anyway".
I guess companies will do whatever they want because of people agreeing with their actions (same goes for everything else, if people didn't accept any kind of abuse things would be way better).

Nah. I'd say they have to match retail prices. Big companies with a huge presence in the console market still rely a lot on retail and don't want to piss GameStop off too much.

I doubt it, if steam had such contract I suppose Uplay wouldn't happen, ubisoft just want money. I see no point in buying uplay only keys (unless it is dirty cheap), you should actually buy it from steam and make ubisoft suffer having to pay 30% to steam instead of paying the same price on uplay while they get 100%. I always wondered the same, they could make it cheaper but it is easy to keep selling for the full price when some people don't care about being fooled.

The difference? One uses Steam as a drm. The other uses uplay.

Not quite. When you buy an Ubisoft game on Steam, it usually uses Steam and Uplay.
When you buy it on Uplay, it only uses Uplay.

Well you can get some Uplay DLC for free but getting achievements in games which grants you currency to get them. That is probably my favorite thing about Uplay

Not buying it straight from them, but let's say G2A it's more for steam, Yet you still have to connect it to Uplay.

uplay copies are coming from the geforce bundle, there are more of them, so it's cheaper

regions could be different too, steam versions only come from specific stores or steam itself

avoid ubi titles, whether from steam or direct from ubi, if you do decide to get something from them get and play it immediately.
I think they remove older titles that they don't want to support anymore from your uplay library, also if you change your ISP you lose everything.
see section 8, the bit about requiring a PERMANENT connection in the following:
https://legal.ubi.com/termsofuse/en-US?ncid=287-3-None--2-eml-31-29-PolicyChange-ToU-17-2-4-0116

has this happened? if a game is online only, there is nothing to do but remove it (like MAG on ps3, or some MMO)

EDIT: that is some messed up FUD you made up, section 8 (ironically the title of a name of a game that shut down) states that SOME games have always-on DRM and/or online components that will have a notice if they shut down.. JUST LIKE EA, SONY, EVERYONE

where did that nonsense come from that titles are removed & ISP matters!? people change ISPs all the time, not countries... support tickets exist too

It's best when u interpret rules as you want, ISP Change, u serious? :D
Have u ever read it normally? Steam has the same section, with alot more gibberish...

By permanent, they mean that you need access to the internet throughout your gameplay session so that it can keep validating the game.

TBH, Ubisofts T&C are prtty much the same as Steams and Origins.
That's the digital future for you - own nothing.

People are simply willing to pay less for non-steam copies. And in the case of something like R6 Siege, it makes no sense as you need Uplay anyway.

some people like to have all their game collection in one place, so they use steam. :3

and prices are probably cheaper on their original platforms since they don't have to pay anything to valve.

They tend to be more expensive here, due to an extra layer of regional pricing. But in most other cases, they tend to cost exactly the same amount.

uplay isn't horrible, they have some nice little additions to using them over steam, although IMHO I'd prefer to have all my games on steam, but the Uplay games with their rewards system and level system isn't all bad..

I'm not claiming that uPlay is unusable or that it has bad games or anything like that. In fact I really like some Ubisoft games. But I have had a lot of problems with certain games, with the stability of their servers and with their support for certain operating systems in the past.

uPlay puts me off buying games - and also on Steam when I'd have to use uPlay as well. If I do get a game then I would rather purchase it through Steam (assuming a similar price) as I have a fanciful dream that one day uPlay will be abandoned and I will be able to play my Ubisoft games on Steam without it...

No difference at all

In fact if you take it on Steam, you get it on uPlay too. If you get it on uPlay though, you don't get it on Steam. That's the only difference. I'd say prefer Steam.

Because Steam is the best. Observe:

  1. Steam is like the cool kids. You know where they sit in the cafeteria.
  2. Origin are the not cool kids. They sit on the other side of the cafeteria.
  3. Uplay is like the kid who gets bullied and has to eat their lunch in the bathroom.
  4. GOG are the hipsters that no one likes because they don't like the stuff anyone else likes.
  5. Games For Windows Live is the kid that wasn't really popular but somehow was always around. Then they weren't because they moved away or their parents decided to homeschool them, or something. What the hell happened to them? And what happened to their sibling--GameSpy?
  6. Humble Bundle is the new kid everyone liked until they stopped being new and was no longer that cool.
  7. BundleStars is the kid who is almost as cool as Humble Bundle, and in a different way, but really isn't as cool, like when a studio wants Leonardo DiCaprio for a film but can't get him so they're like, "ah, whatever, let's just get Justin Timberlake."
  8. IndieGala is the Nickelback fan. The sort of person who buys their best friend a bus pass holder for their birthday.
  9. SteamGifts is the rich kid who thinks they have to give other kids gifts and stuff to make friends.
  10. Desura is the kid who fell down an old boarded up well and died in the third grade.
  11. Groupees, DailyIndieGame, SteamCompanion, GameMiner, et al, are the kids that take the short bus.
