What is your download speed?
It depends on where I access the Internet from. My current connection is up to 300 Mbps while on a different location I have up to 1 Gbps. I also have multiple mobile devices and mobile access points that have an inconsistent connection speed that depends on the access location and the level of interference affecting the connection.

Wow that's a big range of speed. I guess vote for either your current speed or your average

I voted for 500- 999 Mbits considering that even with 1 Gbps I barely register around 900 Mbps at best on top grade hardware. The speed provided by the ISP is theoretical and not guaranteed. Right now you can have a Gigabit plan and at the same time register speeds of 10 Mbps while 5 minutes later you can reach 500 Mbps or 900 Mbps. The speed is generally all over the place and it mainly depends on the location you're communicating with and the network nodes that make possible that communication and their overall load. That is presuming the hardware supports the maximum speed. There is no such thing as a consistent speed and not even the average can be considered usable in a realistic scenario because it's very unreliable.
But, as a rule of thumb, the bigger the maximum theoretical available speed is, the lower the chances to get stuck at snail pace are.

The speed provided by the isp should be relatively close to what you get with a wired connection. Of course the speed will always fluctuate but if you're seeing 10 Mbps with a 1 Gbit plan, it's time to look into upgrading your modem/router or contact your isp to troubleshoot.

I just gave an example of how unreliable the speed measurement really is. I've seen such cases with a different ISP and it was all due to the network load during peak hours and it had nothing to do with the client side equipment. My current ISP doesn't register fluctuations that high or at least I don't notice them (it's not like I'm continuously testing the network speed). I can't say the same for the mobile connections but I guess it's natural for that to happen depending on the area coverage, the signal power and the interference level affecting the connection.

Way too F'in slow!!! lol
Actually it isnt bad, 50mbps on dsl. Wishing we had google fiber around here though.

50 should be more than enough unless you're downloading massive files

You clearly don't have a family of people wanting to watch different things.

Unless you have a family of 10-20 ppl all streaming videos at the same time, it wouldn't be an issue

Let's see:
2 guys watching 2 different streams
3 females watching 3 different streams + facebook and what not
1 of those 2 guys is running all sorts of beermoney apps on burner phones.
Oh yeah, we're also not getting what we pay for thanks to lack of competition in the area I'm in.
Due to bullshit wording Charter can get away with "you'll only get up to 60 Megabits per second"
You will never see 60 Megabits per second due to node congestion in our area.

Tbh you'd probably be fine if the guy stopped all those beermoney apps (assuming the phones are idling ad videos). Can some of you use direct connection?

Guy (me) can't stop running beermoney apps, it's how I pay for Humble Monthly. >_>
And the way the place is set up, no one can direct connect.

I heard they cancelled the google fiber thing... or at least stopped rolling it out in new cities. A true shame, since it was also advertised to be lower priced than pretty much everything else that is already here while having better speed.

(With a wired connection)I currently am getting 0.7 mbits. Really can't complain though because I used to be getting 0.004 mbits which was at the time the best in my area. To download gtav I would have had to leave my computer on night and day for a month. Yay country life.

I don't think it has anything to do with country life or your router. You're only paying for 1 mbit to begin with

looks like your download speed might be getting choked at some point by your modem/router
Comment has been collapsed.
That sounds awesome. Where do you live?
In my experience in the US I've had pretty good download speeds but upload is always 1/10th for whatever dumbass reason.

Latency doesn't really have a direct relevance to download, at my parents house we have 2mb down and 5 ping, at my place I get 60 down and 8 ping. In a house I was sharing years ago we had 200mb down and ~15 ping. Your latency is just your ability to connect stably to the server in question which is affected by things like your distance to the server of your ISP and the distance to the game server.

I have 90+ down, but very rarely my browser will hang for a second while loading a page. May not even be on my end but they're having server issues or something.. but this is infuriating. I can not handle slow internet even a little bit, can't wait for fiber to be in my area.

Does the whole browser hang (can't switch to other pages or anything) or just the page that's loading takes a while?
If it's the whole browser freezing you might want to look into switching to a 64bit version. I recently went to 64bit Firefox and saw all problems like that practically disappear. And I only have 3 Mbit net.

25mbit up and down via fiber for 25 eurobucks.
i guess you wont get a better deal around here for years to come. you can buy up to 100mbit up & down but obviously that's gonna cost considerably more.

pay 30$ for 5MB/s download at 500kbps on good days, been trying to get 50MB Fiber for the office and home, but they havent returned my calls :,v

next thing you know, they'll have 1Gbit speed in their house

Oh god trust me, it'll be decades before that happens. Our closest neighbour is like ten minutes down the road. ISP's won't go near us because the cost of them digging up new cables for a grand total of about seven new customers doesn't appeal to them very much. Broadband didn't even come to us until about ten years after it'd gone mainstream, we were still rockin' out to;

after a test on speedtest, ping: 12ms download: 61.22Mbps upload: 50.06Mbps

If you're not familiar with how to find this out, search "speed test" and click one of the first links. The test won't take anymore than 30 seconds and you will find out your download and upload speeds for free.
