Oh, we're going to pretend that being called the best seller/being recommended by the algorithm for weeks didn't attract casual gamers.
Didn't know that this was the "let's make nonsensical statements and pretend that there are 1 million hardcore gamers that flocked towards that one game" day.
Factorio is mainstream as all hell. If you think that it isn't, then you've got major blinders on, or you really think that selling over a million copies on Steam makes the game underground.

The steam version of Bully crashes often on Windows 10, but I still doubt that the Wii version is better. I always wanted a Wii in order to throw some punches though. 3:D

For some odd reason, my favorite game on Steam so far has been Message Quest I know it's not all that big of a game but I found it to be very charming and the art style was very appealing to me. I don't really think to anyone else it'd be the best in anything but in my eyes, it's the best to me.

Ehh different things on different days, depending on what mood I'm in.
I think ratings are overrated. Putting a number to something just for the sake of it? Why? Especially being as they take into account things that aren't important to people. I don't care that much about graphics, it's a cherry on the top and nothing else, but others would prefer to play a good looking game, so to them a short/easy game with good graphics is still a decent experience. And never mind that a good game for a strategy player is probably an awful game for a fan of Arena shooters. Gaming is really about experiences of the individual. So the measure of a good game, for me, is simple. Overall, did I enjoy the time I spent with the game? Yes? Then it's a game others may also enjoy, even if the game has a few quirks. If I didn't enjoy it, then barring any technical flaws, it could just be that I am not the target market. I don't enjoy grand strategy games and crusader kings II looks like it would put me to sleep, but for some people, it's a 'desert island game', so who am I to say it's a bad game?
(And of course, I'm only talking about games that actually offer some content, other than trading cards or achievements, those can go die somewhere thanks.)

Good reviewers don't put a number on reviews just for the sake of it. You do have the Jim Sterlings out there that claim to be objective, but throw out numbers through tantrums and for shock value (I think Jim's a great internet personality, I just don't agree with his numbering methods.).
At the same time, you have people like YMS (Movie critic), who explain their rating system and tend to use all of the numbers.
We've hit a moment in time where there's so much media out there that we're beginning to have an overinflation of scores. The IMDB's 7s are the equivalent of 3s and 4s for many others. Getting a 6/10 used to be a good thing because it meant they were above the average game, while now it's a death-sentence with 6/10 being known as trash with a few redeeming qualities.

Yeah that's exactly right. Without context, the scales are all different, so how can you just mix them all together and claim that represents a value of something? And even reviewers emphasise different things, so one may punish a game for having lower budget graphics, but honestly that's not a big issue to me, but if the game is scoring low because it's broken then that's important to know, but again broken games can still be fixed by patches, so it's not really fair that some games are forever branded as 'rubbish' because they didn't have a good launch.
Recent example for me, Homefront: the revolution. It was a mess at launch and it has a 54 metacritic rating. But I picked it up on sale in December, and I loved it.
And if you are absolutely right that the scales are getting overinflated, if you need evidence of that, just look at how many of the 'top' 100 games on metacritic and gameranking came out since 2010. Is it because they are that much better than older games, or is it because reviewers are being told that 7 is the new 5?

I'm not sure about games, but with IMDB scores I got up the system that below 5 is usually enjoyable as bad movie, 5-6,5 is the lowest scores where I often still enjoy movies, but generally good ones are around 7 and upwards. Exceptions were like Howling the werewolf movie, or Voices with it's 6,4 being one of the best movies I've seen recently.
WIth games I usually set my overall expectations about quality based on the general score - but that's not fully releated to enjoyment (Lots of problems can actually be ignored) but I always read negative reviews to see what were problematic points for others.

Yeah you really have to read the review to decide. Like for me, one of the funniest reviews I read was a guy criticising Sniper Elite 3 for being 'too easy', and his score reflected that. But in reading it was clear he had been playing on easy mode, with no wind and a marker that shows where the bullet will hit, missing literally the best part of the game, which is lining up a perfect headshot after considering the wind and drop. Now SE may not be perfect but generally the criticisms levelled against it are not things I care about and it's one of my favourite series.
My own scoring system would be similar to yours, 5 is a game you would probably enjoy playing if you like the genre. It might not be groundbreaking but it ticks the boxes, nothings broken and you wouldn't be wasting your time. So honestly the yearly COD and Assassin's creed games would probably be a 5. If you like the other games, you'll probably enjoy them as well.
7 to 9 would be the innovators and ground breakers. Those which defined a genre or polished it to perfection. Classics like Age of Empires II or Bioshock.
10 would be only for those which will forever be the benchmark to which others are compared. They are the games people will still have at the top of their head 10 or 20 years later.
4 would be for flawed gems, and the rubbish would start at 3.

10 - benchmark that other games will be compared to
9 - these are great games. Game of the year contenders, but not ones to be raved about 10 years down the line (think Fallout 3, Batman Arkham). Even if you don't like the genre, there's a good chance you'll enjoy these
7-8 Good but not great. If it's not your genre, it's probably not your thing, but if you do like the genre, you should play it. Fun games you can sink hours into.
6 - decent game for fans of the genre
5 - passable if you like the Genre and have time on your hands, but only if you're getting bored with other games. Gameplay can be repetitive, it could be a pale imitation of a better game, etc.
4 - some flaws but a decent guilty pleasure. Maybe some glitches, or tank controls, or things like that, in an otherwise mediocre game.
3 - garbage. But at least they tried
2 - the makers should be ashamed of themselves. Asset flipping for trading cards is probably up here
1 - so bad that the creators should be shot. And so should the publisher. Maybe worth exploring just to see how bad a game can truly be. Most digihom games aren't even this bad

Yeah sounds about right. A more 'holistic' approach that would take into account how a game stands within it's own genre. Instead of at the moment where you have a lot of review sites comparing apples with oranges and complaining that the oranges are so sour compared to the apples.
Of course Bad rats will be a 10 on any scale.

that's why it's worth checking out the reviewer, and not just the publication. someone who plays a lot of adventure games can write a much better review about an adventure game than a MOBA player can. Likewise, the latter can spot the difference between MOBAs that's more than skin-deep.
it reminds me of all the recommendation threads where someone just says "recommend me a good game". Helps if we know what you like...

I think what Sterling does is that he almost always goes on emotion. He goes in with predispositions (often which he doesn't state clearly in the review itself, while mostly mentioning it in an unrelated video) and through that he doesn't review the game itself but reviews his feelings that he might've even had before he played the game.
So, his reviews might praise the game to high heaven yet it'll still receive a 6/10.

Yeah like the way he tanked Hellblade because he encountered a bug and got pissed with it. He talks sense at times, but then at others he's like a giant man baby that has nappy rash.

He apologized/changed the Hellblade review, but the whole controversy just shows what type of a person he is.
How many times has he given out a score just based on a whim? This one had been, so why could we assume that he hasn't done the same to many others? He stands up for the gaming industry quite often, but for some reason, he just goes out for nontroversies, like the Shelob scandal.

But here's the rub. Steam is full of amazingly well-made games. If I went through my library, I'd find around 50 games which are very good. While Steam has a trash problem, it's important to note all the good we have as well, so as to not forget what people are fighting for when they want the floodgates to close once more.
