^ Title.
I wont lie so today while looking at YouTube videos i stumbled across 2DS, doing some research price was great and there are a bunch of titles that I would like to try from Pokemon to Zelda. I am also a big fan of Nintendo product quality ( I have GBA and I had NES in the past) I got a few questions for you guys so lets get to the point -

  1. Price of the games ? (I am in Europe) ( I dont care if they are brand new or used) Steam and all those bundle sites made me quite cheap
  2. Is it still worth buying ? I mean its already out few years and I want to know do they still make games ? (Playstation is pretty good when it comes to this)
  3. Feel free to post your opinion / experience

Thank you for reading, I will try to find some keys and post giveaway for you guys.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that if I am not buying 2DS (if some reason) I will probably get PS3.

There's a few good games for 3DS, but after that I think that's all there is to it.

You should mainly buy it if you want to have sequels to games like Phoenix Wright or Professor Layton, and of course the always apparent Zelda, Pokemon and Castlevania.

It's not overly expensive, but for a 2DS and some games, you've got to think of a price of about 400 euros for sure.

I'm playing my own right now :P

It has a good library of its own and is backwards compatible with original DS games. Be aware that DSi compatible games (the DSi was an updated DS model with some extra features, much like the difference between the original 3DS and New 3DS) and 3DS games are region locked, and you will need to get PAL region games for it, no saving cash going for US 3DS games. Original DS games have no region lock though.

I can't say much about your local prices, but the UK will be a possible location to get some more games.

Here is my own library

The eShop does occasionally have sales, but usually for smaller games and Atlus games. Your best bet for picking up good discounted 3DS games is getting in on sales by retailers like Amazon, (your local game retailers here), etc.

Sales on the 3DS EShop are quite poor. It does a few, but nothing compared to what you would want.

PS3 is awesome. Great sales most of the time on PSN as well. I got mine about this time last year, and look at my library now. :P

PS3 is great. And you can find many deals on games, new or used.
If the op wants to also play ps2 games on their PS3, they should research that, as not all the PS3 systems are backwards compatible. (though every ps3 plays ps1 games).

Sony decided to remove the hardware emulation of ps2 from the original ps3 (the original ps3 actually had the physical ps2 chip/processer inside it.)
Sony then went to software emulation of ps2 for the next batch (or two) of ps3.

I am now told the current production line (as well as some older lines) have NO hardware or NO software emulation of ps2.
To make way for ps2 classics in the psstore. Which is a dick move by sony. I'm also told that some system updates removes the ps2 software emulation too! Though I didn't actually look up this fact.

Again, amazing list you got there Delta. There is so much games on the list that I would like to play again Devil May Cry serial, MGS and Ratchet ohh those good PS2 times...

Just found out about UK site (game.co.uk) that sells pre owned PS3 games for like nothing.. Red Dead Redemption and Drake Fortune with shipping would cost me like 12€

Choosing my new console is becoming harder and harder -_-

I looked at it, wanted to buy it since it was cheap but I decided not to in the end as I didn't like the build of the console being quite large and bulky, where I prefer the folding capability from other DS consoles.

Folding was nice, but I do like my 2DS over the 3DS I have as a backup system. The size of the system means less hand cramps for me. And since I don't do well with the 3D, its no loss.

I currently own 2 3DS systems, and had a 2DS system at one point (found it cheap, sold it for a profit) As an active user of my 3DS system, I will answer your questions.

  1. Games are quite expensive. Unlike Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo NEVER slashes the prices on their first party games. They will go on sale (never more than 50%, and sales on full retail 1st party games are rare), but expect prices at 35 - 50 euros per new 1st party title.

  2. Yes. The Nintendo 3DS/2DS family recently received a new model called "New Nintendo 3DS". This system adds facetracking 3D, faster hardware, and Amiibo support (Google it!) However, I only know of a few system exclusives (Xenoblade Chronicles and Binding of Isaac: Rebirth). Nintendo currently has no new plans to ditch the 2DS/3DS family, and have not announced that they will stop development for the older models. Expect new releases to be playable on 2DS/3DS for at least another 1-3 years or more.

  3. Great system. Well worth it for a few games: Super Smash Bros 3DS (Must have. I bought my first system the day this game was announced), Pokemon X/Y, The Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds,

No, not if you're not into JRPGs and Nintendo stuff. And for the love of humanity if you get "it" get the 3DS not that thing for 4y olds. I would still advise towards PS3 if you've never had one, tons of great exclusives that you can find for cheap now.

Remember, the DS in 2DS stands for doorstop.

If you can, I would buy games from Ebay, I've done this a few times and haven't gotten a bad copy yet. I also bought a 3ds from Ebay and it was in fair condition, but I ended up getting a brand new "New 3DS xl" and I love it, though I usually play with the 3D off. I've never owned a 2ds, so I can't give much feedback on it.

eBay is pretty good choice for me because I saw quite large amount of games selling there and shipping prices are also good.

3DS is better, and the New 3DS XL is better still. You get an amazing library with The Legend of Zelda, Xenoblade Chronicles, and I was shocked at how good Smash Bros is on it.

I own a 3DS XL and I love it. Game prices here are very expensive. I recently lost my job so I started selling some of my 3DS and DS games, especially the ones I own on Steam too, like LEGO Franchise, Resident Evil, Batman and Spider-Man. It's been a year or so since I bought my last 3DS game but I still own 50+ titles that I love. I recommend the Ace Attorney Franchise and Mario Bros Franchise. They are really great. The Nintendo eshop also has some very good games for low price.

The 3DS has the most amazing library of games, I absolutely love mine. I carry in my pocket EVERYWHERE. I have the "New" 3DS XL model. I prefer to keep digital games with the 3DS, so I have more options out and about. I have a 64GB micro SD card, and it's still got plenty of room (65,859 Blocks left).

The eShop has sales occasionally, not as often as people would like, but sometimes they have big AAA titles on sales. For example last week I got Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (33% off) and Persona Q (50% off) on sale. ATLUS titles go on sale like every month, so any of the AMAZING Etrian Odyssey titles can be had pretty cheap (66% off) if you are patient. Other AAA titles like Super Mario 3D Land or Animal Crossing usually only go on sale during a "Sale Theme Week" or when another title in the series is released.

Many titles have demos, and I highly recommend you take advantage of those to see if any particular title might suit you. I did that with Etrian Odyssey Untold. I played the demo for 10 minutes...that convinced me to buy EOU and EO4 immediately after!

Also with the REALLY big releases, they do offer pre-purchase/pre-load options, or midnight releases where you can buy and download the game at midnight release day. Example: I bought Etrian Odyssey Untold 2: The Fafnir Knight two weeks in advance and was able to download the entire game right then, but I had to wait until release day to download the tiny "you can launch it now" file and play.

I have a ton of games, but these are the ones I personally recommend:

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D - 28,832
Super Smash Bros - 9,105
Final Fantasy Theatrythym: Curtain Call - 13,406
Zelda: A Link Between Worlds - 5,437
Zelda: Tri-Force Heroes - 4,593
Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D - 5,143
Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D - 5,052
Fire Emblem Awakening - 8,577
Super Mario 3D Land - 2,318
Shovel Knight - 712
Legend of Legacy - 6,899
Yo-Kai Watch - 6,638
Bravely Default - 26,495
LBX: Little Battlers Experience - 14,461
Puzzles and Dragons Z - 7,185
Mario and Luigi: Dream Team - 6,598
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy - 2,945
Professor Layton VS Phoenix Wright - 11,218
Chibi-Robo Zip Lash - 6,474
Pokemon Art Academy - 2,568
Shin Megami Tensei IV - 14,334
Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl - 6,284
Etrian Odyssey Untold 2: The Fafnir Knight - 7,124
Etrian Odyssey 4 - 5,715
Etrian Mystery Dungeon - 4,318
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate - 20,806
Pokemon X/Y - 13,799
Pokemon OR/AS - 14,496
Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth - 14,203
Rune Factory 4 - 10,961
Animal Crossing: New Leaf - 6,000
Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer - 4,108
Kid Icarus Uprising - 12,904
Fantasy Life - 6,853
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon - 6,745
Kirby Triple Deluxe - 4764
Story of Seasons - 4,466

What a great list you got there !
Games downloaded from eShop are stored on SD card am I right ? Lets take Pokemons X for example how much space do they take on SD card ?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, exactly. If you plan to get a lot of digital games, get a big SD card.
Oh, normal 2DS/3DS uses a normal SD Card. The "New" 3DS model uses a MicroSD card.
Space on the SD card on the 3DS is measured in blocks, 8 blocks = 1 MB.
I'll edit the size of each game in next to them in the list above.

Thanks for putting so much effor into all this. I was looking at used 2DS/3DS and few of them come with already downloaded games but I heard something about retaking NNID so I guess those will become usless once I login with my NNID ?

No problem, I know this stuff can be a bit confusing for new owners, so I don't mind helping out. The 3DS is a great system with great games. Like I said previously, I always carry mine in my pocket everywhere I go.

I wouldn't buy a used one that has pre-installed games under another NNID, as once you put in your own NNID you'd lose them. if your buying from a game store (like Gamestop), you'd need the previous owner's NNID and password to keep using the system with the downloaded games, which I seriously doubt the store has access to. If your buying off of some websites (like Craigslist), you could possibly get the seller's NNID and password from them, but those sites are a risk all their own. So your only GOOD option would be a factory reset and plug in your own NNID.

Buying a bundle new with pre-installed games is fine though. I got a Wii U with Super Mario 3D World pre-installed, put in my NNID and still had the game. I confirmed it with Nintendo before I did it though (online Chat Support).

You've already gotten plenty of input on this, including one or two comments advising you to skip the 2DS and find a 3DS cheap, so I'll just put in my two pence. Take into account whether the 3D effect is important to you. If you want to be able to choose to turn it on/off at any time, get a 3DS. If 3D in long periods makes you nauseous or gives you migraines/tension headaches, like it does for me, go for a 2DS.

It's true that the 2DS is designed with younger players in mind—durability and lack of 3D, really—but it also works very nicely if you have large hands. I really mean it on the durability, too. The device has some heft, and it's slid out of my hand during a sudden twist of my body when I turned to grab something, hit a solid portion of the back of a chair and then hit the floor pretty good. Not a scratch, and still fully functional. Have that sort of accident with a 3DS/XL/(N)XL, and you'll probably be looking at a broken hinge.

3D makes me nauseous I mean I feel like throwing up after playing for longer periods. I am also clumsy so having quality product is big plus. Only thing that keeps me "away" from not getting 2DS is that I saw that developers could "ditch" 2DS because of the weaker cpu should I be worried about that ?

I'm not sure that should actually be an issue. Unlike the PC world, where new hardware comes out all the time and developers are always trying to make use of the next great hardware improvements and users are financially capable of shelling out for new hardware every few years, console/handheld developers realize that making games restricted to specific versions of the same generation of a gaming system [barring a few exceptions like anything designed around PS Move or Kinect, or Xenoblade Saga 3D] is not as profitable as keeping support for legacy versions of the current gen console/handheld. They know that if they capitalize on hardware improvements every time Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft releases a slightly better version of the same console, and that they aren't able to play it on the version of the console they already have, users aren't going to be encouraged to buy new games, especially given that younger gamers being provided for by parents make up for a significant portion of the market That's why we have generations of console and handhelds to begin with.

So in my opinion, no, you shouldn't have to worry about that.

2DS is exactly the same as a 3DS there. It simply doesn't do the 3D effect, and has mono sound output for the speaker.

Consider the size of system you would want to hold for gameplay. That is why I got a 2DS. I love the DS Lite, but ****, do my hands cramp when I play it long enough. The 3DS is the same size as a DS Lite, so I decided to not get that, and the XL was rather expensive here at the time of purchase, so I avoided getting that.

I have a 3DS and... well... I never use the 3D feature. It just a pain in the eyes because your eyes have to focus in the 3D screen, and then in the 2D screen. So it's bad because the lost of focus on the 3D screen, regain and all.
For the specifics of the hardware, it's mainly the same as the 3DS XL and New 3DS Xl, just smaller, but nothing much else.
But take in mind that here are some only can played on 3DS XL, so...
Have fun :3

I have a 2DS XL. Bigger screen, but lower rez - better for my old eyes :P.
As for games, I have a R4i card - I just download the NDS ROM to my PC and transfer it to a Micro SD which is inserted into the R4i.
Games cost nothing to try out. However I must stress - If you like the game and play it for more than just trying it out, buy it - Only fair.

nope - there is a limitation though - eg - I use a 8GB card, for the DS to read it, there is the root where all card info is stored, then I need to make a second game DIR - the DS OS can't read a folder if there is more than 4GB of data in any one DIR - I've tested this on a 32 GB and a 64GB card .
All you have to do is make multiple Game DIR's (Games1, Games2, Games3 etc - or in my case I made Pokémon, for all the Pokémon games, Mario for all the Mario/racing etc).
You can DL a torrent (if you wanna take the risk) of huge numbers of ROMS - I DL a 4GB one once and ended up deleting about 90% of them as crap (Many jap/ita/german ones that I couldn't play being only able to read English :P) and a lot of Multiple releases eg 3 versions of Pokémon Black 2 of which were in Japanese and Korean.
It's good for the kids as it saves me a lot of money and my 5 and 4 year olds wanna play EVERY game.... for about 3 minutes.
As I said however, if you do play it for fun and like the game - it is better to buy it. I have purchased every copy of pokemon games for instance - got hooked on red with the GB Color and I just gotta catch em all!
