When someone says thank you when entering the giveway I find it so hollow. It's all copy pasted and doesn't show any real gratitude, I've seen people leaving the same exact message on every giveaway they entered. When someone says thank you after winning that's another thing, especially when they showed their excitement at winning something.

This is either very unimaginative on their part, or a red flag that a bot is entering the giveaway.

Could it be that the person saying "thank you" is truly grateful?
For the unexpected GA, bringing some memories, sincere wish to win, moved by a comment.

I'm guilty of some "thank you" because of that. Sometimes I elaborate it and sometimes is a sincere but unimaginative "thank you".

I'd say it makes a lot more sense to say thank you when entering a whitelist-only giveaway, otherwise yea it's kind of a hollow gesture.

I sometimes do that when I really want to get the game as a good luck ritual :c

Yeah, it has little success rate but it sometimes work :v

That nice, because get a notation on steamgift that let me know that the key have been worked well.
I may reply, depend of the message and the game i offer.
But not enough for whitelist (mainly focus on recent ga and around a 1:1 ratio for whitelist).

On my side when i win a game, i always send " Key worked well, thanks for the game. "

From a winner it is nice and polite way which I consider as unwritten rule of what people should do. If people say thank you on entering on the other way, they are bots or dumbasses. Really hate to see red envelopes on public giveaways. Even at 5/6+ level I still find people doing it.

I understand your perspective, that's why I stopped doing it myself as well.
But years ago when I joined the site I was doing it to show people I appreciate the fact they are giving things away.

Just the way you look at it in my opinion.

Yeah, we all did it and now we know how stupid it was. I sometimes commwnt giveaway or create creepy description in mine as I actually like to talk in way of having real conversation, not thank you spam.

That is in public giveaway I run:
By entering giveaway you sign up yourself for accommodation of slime aliens in your house during invasion in 2027.

Got one answer... which I overlooked due to spam from wl thread.

so,.... 2027 ehhh....
I better prepare myself.

jokes aside, from a winner it's always a nice gesture. from 99,99% bots, not good, but the one I really hate it's the "may de wolf bla bla....." (or similar to that) don't know who create that.

i would say thank you on giveaways that i liked and had no comments to make the creator feel better and not feel ignored,

then once i asked to join a group i realized that me being "nice" was enough to put me on blacklists to prevent me from entering almost every single group on this website for being suspect of being a bot/alt account/scammer....

and after being rejected for the same reason from the second group i just stopped and never requested to join anything for the past year.

from the point of view of someone who's been here for years and joined/hosted thousands/tens of thousands of giveaway i get what you mean being bombarded with thousands of notifications over the years, but i think the most active members just forget that normal people still exists and are just genuinely trying to act nicely as an accepted normal social behavior.

Counter(?) view: When it's a (private) group/whitelist giveaway and there are 60+ entries with no comments, it really feels like it's... y'know, maybe demoralizing for the giveaway creator. I feel like I have to comment something, anything, to "break the silence". If you prefer the silence, then you should just say so- people can't read your mind. :P (The '?' after 'counter' is because you're speaking of public giveaways in particular so the two views are closely related but not necessarily counter to each other- see, if I didn't clarify you'd have no way to know why exactly I put a '?' there.)

When I make a giveaway and it's just "yeah, here are some entries and nothing else" I can't shake the feeling like I've done something wrong (and I do try to write a description every time).

Saying thank you for a won game is a display of courtesy which I appreciate. Thank you messages entering the giveaway are a red flag for autojoin activity.

funnily enough ... i did this when i joined, i had handtyped the first 1500 messages between my first year in february/march ... someone was even kind enough to gift me a spare key of one of his giveaways

That's a marvelous story but doesn't alter the fact that most thank you messages in giveaways are due to bot activity. Sadly I might add.

Both join and received messages can be scripted. There can be no reply if there is no initial message. Problem solved.

Two SG members
Met in a GA comment section
Bowed most politely
And bowed once again
"How do you do?"
And "How do you do?"
And "How do you do?" again

It goes on and on.

Overall I would say no one should feel forced to write whatever. If you do write Thank you - it's ok. If you do write You're welcome - it's ok. If you write nothing - it's ok. If you want to use a bot and spam Thank you - not ok! just kidding well maybe not

I think being polite is a good habit. I say thank you if I win and I only reply to the winner of my giveaways.

But I did get a thank you yesterday from someone who entered a giveaway over a year ago and didn't win. I'm guessing a script spammed every giveaway they entered. I didn't bother replying to that one.

Post win acknowledgement is basic courtesy, acknowledgement of that comment should be equally returned. Then full stop unless there is valid reason to continue the conversation with more information provided. I've seen people say receipts can be scripted, which may be true but far more unlikely than pre-win thank you.

Pre-win comments have been marred by potential BOTs and that will never go away, so take it or leave it as you get to know personalities I suppose.

I'm kinda happy. I don't expect even a thank you, while it feels to be the fitting minimum. Still doesn't happen all the time, but I guess being happy about people thanking a game is better, than being angry when they don't.

Seems to me like a bunch of people misunderstood OP. It was about the giveaway creator replying to getting a thank you message from the winner, not someone saying thanks for winning. So like what people think of the giveaway creator coming back to the winner who said "Thanks" to tell them "You're welcome". At least that's what I seem to understand at the top. That is something I already do, everyone who won one of my giveaways and said thanks I've always replied back and told them they're welcome and to enjoy, or if it was more detailed I replied in more detail. Sometimes the users came back weeks or months after to tell me they enjoyed the game, so to me it's a positive.

Thanks after activating and marking the gift received is nice.
Comments about the game and having finished playing it from the winner is the cherry on the top, and I might even whitelist them.
Thanks before the key has even been sent, to me is rude & impatient.
Sometimes if I don't receive a message of thanks from a user, I see if they have a habit of not showing gratitude, and may blacklist them.
This doesn't happen often, but if I'm giving away decent games, I expect a positive response from the winner.

Yeah sometimes the winner of one of my giveaways shares his/her impressions with the game afterwards. I always love that. Please keep doing it everyone who does that. 👍🏻

I see it as standard practice. The winner says "thanks", I respond "you're welcome", everything is fine in the world.
It just seems like the polite thing to do, at least to me. Although some times I respond with "enjoy the game" just to add some variety.

I usually reply with Have a nice/cool week ahead, if its a Monday or a Tuesday. Or have a great weekend. Or Happy Sunday!

Or....If I have some specific thought(complementary/positive) that pops to my mind when I see their username/pic.
Maybe I might insert a gif ocassionally, If I feel like it.
There is no particular generic reply I have in mind.

Edit: But I do think one should always acknowledge someone's else thanking gesture. So a basic 'you're welcome' is better than nothing.

I appreciate when people thank me after winning a game, and I always try to reply to return the courtesy and say "you're welcome." I'm never bothered when people don't say it to me after I thank them for a game I've won, though.

I do, however, find it annoying when my SG inbox gets inundated with "thank you" messages from people who have entered my giveaways but NOT won. I don't blacklist or yell at them. I just quietly find it annoying and move on with my life. 🙂

unfortunately, those are almost always from botters. if i do find a special giveaway that makes me wanna thank the creator solely for the chance to enter, i will add a little blurb explaining why the giveaway means what it means to me so it isn't just the normal 'thank you' spam.
