Every time I buy stuff on Steam my account gets charged a ~50 cent currency conversion fee. Why won't Steam let me buy several copies of the same game? GRRRRRRRRRR.

Seconded, wanted to do a giveaway of multiple copies of Super Meat Boy and its soundtrack a few weeks ago, but I had to buy them all individually which was a bit of an annoyance. Even without the conversion fee problem you're having, it seems like something that should be available.

just do the following:

if you want 5x4€ games for example it would cost 22€ incl transfer costs, right?
then don't buy them as that, but buy 20€ steam wallet(+0,5€ transfer costs) and you have the same

just 1,50€ cheaper

upon reading this It got me wondering. There's seems to be ~2.3% tax on all my steam purchases. even though the currency rate when I made that purchase is 1 USD = 0.9921 CAD

Steam conversion rate/tax? is higher than paypal?

It does for some games;
"Buy Borderlands 2 - 4-Pack
Includes four copies of Borderlands 2 - Send the extra copies to your friends"
It's not a platform for a wholesale game market.

Nobody's talking about wholesale purchases. Steam has incorporated a gifting system, so [in my mind] it's perverse that it doesn't allow the purchase of a game for yourself and a couple of others as gifts in a single transaction.

What you just described is the 4pack

to defend the OP: there aren't 4 packs of all games and sometimes you want only 1 extra copy, not 3
