Bioshock is overhyped and overrated. Not sure why the game earned so much praise. Peel back the great visuals/environments and you have a predictable and bland story, forgettable characters, unchallenging gameplay, and mediocre/uninspired FPS mechanics.
The game lacks any sort of depth. It's bland and mediocre.
4-5/10

Peeling back the environment is taking away half of what makes the game so good xD

BioShock 1 is amazing, one of my favorite games. Easily 9/10
BioShock 2 is not that good but still worth playing but what is interesting about playing the second one is that you (at least I did) appreciate the first one more). 7/10
and read the book after playing both

Bioshock 1 - 9/10 Absolutely amazing atmosphere and story. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll say absolutely nothing about it. If you know absolutely nothing about Bioshock, then the experience will blow your mind, if you know a bit, it's still worth it, though may not sweep you off your feet as it did to me xD
Bioshock 2 - 6/10 I didn't enjoy this one anywhere near as much. Once again, I don't want to spoil anything for it, but I think you'd understand if you adored the first. The gameplay is probably more refined than the first, but it loses what makes it amazing, simply because you aren't as vulnerable and scared.
I suggest you get them both anyway, as they're such an amazing franchise :D

As fun as any decently made FPS. These games are more about the narrative, characters, and setting - they're all quite unique. Both are a solid 8.

Currently playing the first. I'm playing at hardest difficulty so I don't see how the game mechanic can be boring or not challenging for some, but I understand they're just opinions. From the perspective of a player who haven't finish the game, I like the gameplay and storyline so far and would rate it at 7 for now.

Both Bioshock 1 and 2 is well worth playing. The fantastic art-direction and insane attention to detail in the level design makes the games memorable.
I'd recommend playing System Shock 2 first though. It's out on GOG.com for 10 bucks. Bioshock was originally based on SS2, it's the same developer but due to licensing issues they could not continue the System Shock name. It's a much deeper game with far more interesting gameplay, much more of a true RPG/FPS hybrid than Bioshock. It might not have the fancy graphics of Bioshock but everything else is better in SS2.
