I'd say the first deserves a 9.6 and the second an 8.8 because Metacritic.

As long as you don't have problems with the DRM, they're both great. I prefer the first more, but if you've not played them yet, go for it.

This sums it up pretty good ^^ Even though the final hours and ending of Bioshock 2 where superior in both, gameplay AND story, if you ask me.. Irrational always had its problems with creating a good ending xD
If you played and enjoyed SystemShock 2, both games might dissappoint you a little gameplaywise, but they are still very good and when it comes to story and setting, they are absolutely unique and awesome!
On top of that, Bioshock 2 has a very interresting und underrated Multiplayer.

It's not fun. It's dark, brutal and scary. Lots of gore, blood, blood and gore, kill, massacre, kill, kill them, torture them and kill them all!

1 decade ago
Permalink

Gore, dismemberment and slaughter are not the main points of either Bioshock games.

But there sure are a lot of instances of those.

BS1: 10 - Atmosphere, story, writing in general, originality, rich universe. It's fucking art.

BS2: 9 - It's moar Bioshock, polished gameplay, Big Sisters are mean bitches.

Get them. Everyone should.

Why doesn't anyone ever admit that the gameplay in B1 gets rather repetitive? Yes, you acquire new abilities along the way, but every battle feels the same. I'd say great atmosphere, good story, mediocre gameplay.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It has pretty much no learning curve, that's right. But all the other aspects triumph over a rather flat gameplay (in this particular case).

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree that despite its limited gameplay it should still be played, but it just seems everyone always praises it as perfect, when it's far from it. Even though you admit its flaws, you still give it a 10. If it admittedly has flaws, how can you give it a perfect score?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Again, the game is so immersive and atmospheric that it makes you forget completely about the dull (maybe?) gameplay. It's not completely broken to the extent of not letting you enjoy it (like what happened to me with Spec-Ops The Line).

10, pretty damn fun. The story is unique AND immersive. Genuinely worth whatever price you get it at but it's frequently on sale. Some of my all time favorite games.

1st is great. Have the scary feels too. Damn splicer always lurking in the dark and shouting things. Great story. Last boss battle is kinda not epic enough. Still great.

2nd is okay. You play as a big daddy. Got to use the drill. And the big sisters are cool. Only play it halfway.

The first game is going to be a classic that we reflect on in twenty years.

The second is a good game. If it was judged on its own, people would like it. However, it falls behind the first Bioshock game, so it looks like a piece of shit in comparison.

Both are worth playing.

Says the guy with furry avatar.
One of the most shallow and bland games in last 10 years. Predictable story with usual M. Night Shyamalan twist, pretty dissapointing gameplay and awful FPS mechanics. Bioshock tries to be too deep for it's own sake and it falls into emotional porno. Fact that both of these games got 80+ on Metacritic represents everything that is wrong in modern gaming

Just saw this. I have a furry avatar because I'm a furry. Nothing to do with taste, and really completely baseless to a game discussion. Bioshock 1 is a very good game, overrated a bit yeah. But it's hardly a bad game.

As for everything that's wrong with modern gaming, I present to you: Activision and CoD rehashes, EA and Capcom with Day 1 DLC's, Ubi for completely disrespecting their playerbase in the past with draconian DRM, all these companies and many others with gluts of silly and/or useless and overpriced DLC's, a near complete lack of originality in game production, poor treatment of workers in dev houses, overbearing publishers who care little for their devs and push for releases before they are ready, badly mismanaged games that are not representative of the footage/feature lists that was previously released/announced, and the list goes on. If Bioshock is what you would point to as a problem within the gaming industry, you're being foolish.

ok, ok:

Bioshock 1: 9/10

Bioshock 2: 9/10

Bioshock 2 made a lot of things better than Bioshock 1 but also some worse, examples: story is a little better in Bioshock 1, GfWL is crap (it corrupted my savegames two times -.-), the shadow of yourself is the scariest part of Bioshock 2 (which is good ^^), but overall Bioshock 1 is a little bit scarier(but the scary stuff is repeating itself all the time :P) and the LAST point: Bioshock 2 is a little too short for me, but still much longer than Homefront, which I completed yesterday in 3 hours ;)

First one - 9+/10, very close to 10 (there are... 5? games out there that I could give the perfect score - Bioshock is VERY close though). The atmosphere. Man. Truly a game one of a kind, it made me interested in dystopia to the point I was talking about it on my matura exam (dystopia, not Bioshock :P I did mention The Matrix though).

Second - 9/10. An awesome game - just a little worse than the first part (mostly when it comes to the story - and it does almost nothing new).
