Hi SteamGifts.

I was playing The Witcher 3, specifically in the Skellige archipelago, and as I saw all these points in interest at the bottom of the sea, it struck me : I am really, viscerally terrified about diving in games. How am I going to explore all these places ?

Seriously, when there are underwater areas in games, I'm not really afraid to swim as long as I know it's some kind of lake or a bounded area. Even if there's no visibility and there are monsters, I don't care.

However, put me in a game where you can swim in the sea and I crap my pants. See Skyrim for example, not scary at all, easy as pie, yet I hate swimming in the sea north of Skyrim, I really hate it. I need to find ice banks and just jump on them as much as I can.

I felt the same when playing GTA V and exploring the sea for collectibles : the obscurity, the fear of the unknown... I was really feeling bad playing it (yet I decided to collect them all in one session to get it over with).

I enjoy playing scary games, I enjoy monsters, dark ambiences, cheap jumpscares, you name it, but this is different, a real phobia. As of now it's the only one I've noticed.

I've seen on the nexus, someone had created a mod to replace spiders with bears in Skyrim, in order to accomodate with people with arachnophobia. I used to find it a bit funny, barely grasping the idea that said monsters might actually prevent some people from enjoying the game. Now I'm starting to understand how they feel.

In real life, this feeling persists when swimming, albeit maybe a bit dimmer, perhaps because my mind manages to remind itself that there is nothing out there, no monsters, no uncharted mystery, no supernatural mambo-jambo. I've even dove deep in the past, in the Mediterranean sea, and explored shipwrecks - I did not feel that fear, or it was really unnoticeable.

Back to The Witcher. I am eventually going to explore these places, the completionnist inside me urges me to. But I am really going to have a bad time.

I hate "blogging" but I really wanted to discuss this with you guys, and hear of your own phobias. Has there been similar irrational fears that impaired your gaming experiences ? Tell me.

Here's a little gift for you guys. How about that ? I can't make it more relevant with the current topic. I haven't tried it yet, but for some reason, I feel as if it would be an exception : shiny colors, clear, transparent waters, no mysteries, no dangers : I don't think I would be afraid to try that one.

Caves ? Closed areas, then. I'm not afraid of those. It's the open that creeps me out.

I (almost) drowned when I was a child, so I have a fear of water too. One game helped me to fight that (more or less), it's called Hydrophobia. It's very short (3 hours or so), and it put me in situations that stressed me out, but at the same time required clear thinking. I must say, after I finished it, I was much more confident with water. Maybe it'll help you too, who knows =)

Thank you. I haven't played it, but all I saw from screnshots was enclosed areas flooded, probably it won't have any effect on my own fear :-)

Well, if you're more afraid of open underwater areas, I might suggest AC4: Black Flag. There are bits of deep underwater exploration, which are pretty beautiful and mostly open-area type =)

On second thought, there are sharks and muraenas who are trying to chomp on you, so that might be frightful. Still, just like in Hydrophobia, game forced me to think clearly when underwater - air was limited, health too. So after 3-4-5 dives I became more confident in my underwater exploring =)

I enjoyed Hydrophobia as well. I, too, (almost) drowned as a child, but fortunately didn't aquire any fear of water from the experience - in fact I love it. However, being trapped below deck in a sinking ship is a whole different thing - if I was the one inside that game's scenario I'd be terrified.

Try Hydrophobia. No phobias as such, though what does scare me are horror games where you can't defend yourself. Where all you can do is run or hide. Dead Space was pretty scary (I had mentally steel myself every time, before I played) but I got through it. But Amnesia and Outlast and similar games scare the crap out of me.

I always feel uneasy when I have to enter some flooded indoor area in games.
I love going for a swim in games; lakes, seas, rivers, fountains... Always jumping into the water happily. But when it comes to submerged rooms, I have a really bad feeling all of a sudden. Flooded rooms are freakin' scary.

And then there's flying insect. I'm terribly scared of any sort of flying insect in the real life, and it carries over to the video games.

In TRU, I felt uneasy, luckily the first area quickly becomes a closed area, and I felt better.

In Far Cry 3, I was afraid to swim because of the sharks, not really because of the unknown.

My fear was present while playing those two, but just to a little extent.

Arachnophobic here. I try to use anti-spider mods whenever I can (yes, I have some weird bears in Skyrim :P). Sometimes I'm almost not bothered by them (I played Driftmoon recently without any issues, have played Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets game when I was a child and, while I found some moments unplesant, it didn't really scare me), but sometimes it's pretty bad. I had to stop playing Nehrim and make my own anti-spider mod for it (the mods on nexus didn't work fully for me) because I simply couldn't do a quest which required to enter a cave with five or so spiders. I could kill them in one hit, but the idea of even one of those touching, being near my char was simply unbearable. I guess it depends strongly on the model used, the animation and how realistic it is. The giant spiders often scare me less than small ones.

Despite me having slight arachnophobia, it's not that bad when I play games like Skyrim. But acrophobia is something completely different for me since I really fear of heights irl, probably because you can die :D, so it's not just some regular irrational phobia.
But many people have different phobias that can deny them to enjoy games (for example they start having problems with breathing). Coulrophobia, sciophobia, claustrophobia, bathophobia, etc.

I fear dark horror games. Not zombie ones but the other ones(although I haven't played RE yet, which seems really scary). The same goes to horror movies(in movies I also include zombies). Even tho none of those creatures exist I still fear them. I can't watch a horror movie til the end.

But I think this fear is ok because these creatures only exist in a fictional world that is meant to be scary and it can easily be avoided.

No real phobias, but I found that I don't enjoy the survival horror games where you can't defend yourself. I like horror games, Resident Evil, Dead Space etc... However when I forced myself to play outlast, it was brutal. I had to play it in bursts, the whole "run and hide is the only option" thing really didn't let me enjoy the game. I enjoy getting 100% on games.. but fuck you Outlast.

Although I didn't find Outlast scary (I don't find most of horror games scary) I can give +1 to "I didn't like not being able to fight for my life".
It just feels so fake in the game. IRL if I would be in situation like in that game I would grab some pipe or even some flashlight just to have some melee weapon to at least try protect myself. Not that it would help much but still I belive this would be natural reaction of most of us. But no, fk you guys, you can't grab anything, because you have to run and your character is actually a little, helpless kid LOL. Now go there and be scared.

Well everything is physical threat for reporter Miles Upshur. He is not exactly tough guy and on the other side you have two and more times bigger inhabitants of asylum, so they are pretty much used to physical violence. I guess Miles with no history of violence or training just accepts it that he has no chance and basically the only option is to run or hide. Btw would you fight this guy? or rather run away (note that inhabitants in Outlast are even more intimidating and much more creepy looking) :D

You know, I think this is a interesting psychical question - how would You (and I, and anyone other) react in case of faceing a real life threathing situations. I think some would run, some would fight and some people would just froze in plain fear. I can't really tell how I would react in given scenario but IF I would be able to keep my mind cool I would try to rate my chances with different scenarios. Can I run? Do I have a palce to run? If not is better to fight him here or in some darker place? Do I know where the hell is darker place? And so on.

And also about your explanation of Miles 'lack' of fighting skills - do you think that, even if you would decide to run, you woulnd't take any kind of weapon, just to have something to protect yourself if you would find yourself in dead end?
I just think (in case of Outlast) that giving you weapon, even most useless one, would make this game a little better and more realistic.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It would make it more realistic, but on the other hand it would make it less scary. In horror games you usually stop being scared (or at least by a lot) by things at exact moment when game provides you some sort of way of fighting them, a weapon in this case. If Amnesia had weapon to fight monsters it wouldn't be that well known game for its scary moments and atmosphere tension. Let's say Condemned: Criminal origins, you're law enforcer so it is expected there that protagonist can manage tough situations. It is great game, but when you have weapon in your hand you feel more safe, less scary and it loses the meaning of horror element (especially that taser makes you feel invincible, I didn't used that in my game). So with Outlast it was their decision to make it more scary at the expense of being it less realistic.

This is not only game that is unrealistic. In fact all games are, plenty of stuff in them can't be done like in real life. If it is this problem, it is gonna take much longer (probably eternity) to make a game completely realistic without denying player things they can do in real life, starting with important or useful stuff and ending with trivial things.

I don't find realistic that Miles Upshur keeps recording things even if normal person would just toss the camcorder away or better after something bad happened, crawl out nearest tiny window and get away from this place. There are few moments where he can easily leave this place (or with some hard effort), yet it is denied by game mechanics. But with that possibility game would be over soon. Game is pretty linear so we need to look at it as story being told and that Upshur is the way he is. As with many games protagonist is unique individual and we are merely playing in his role, not as gamer him/herself.

EDIT: added gif for fun (Big guy vs small guy)

Well, yeah, I kinda see your point about horror (or rather 'scarry') games and weapons. It makes some sense.

And yeah I know that most of games are unrealistic, you don't have to explain thigns like that to me -.- I mentioned realism because in some games, some elements are more annoying than in others. It's like you said, I once played some HF2 mod horror game where crouching was dissabled (or jumping, I dont remember) and when I was suppose do just lower my head , or make a little bigger step than normal I was stuck. It was annoying, unlgocial and kinda killed the fun. You see, I don't have a problem with realism when it comes to giant opponents, demons, dragons, or serial killers that can roam freely around town (GTA, I'm pointing at you). I have a problem with realism when I can't do simplest things (oh nay, I can't go on that rock, it is 1 meter high and i can only jump 90 centemetrs ;_;), or act like it would be natural for most people to act (shiet, they gonna get me, lets grab that pipe, if I'm going to die I will take at least one of them with me), because game mechanics are limited to force me to do (or not do) things, to make it more 'scary'. I honestly think that this is kinda going the easy way. "How about we try to do something scary and uniqe by giving player some basic weapon?" "Nah, better just gave them camera, it's easier to scary gamers when they can't protect themselfes."

But yeah, still your argument about 'playing a role' ends this disscussion. In most games we only re-enact a main character. After all some of the games aspire to be considered as another medium to tell stories, just like books or movies.
That also kinda remind me how people couldn't understand the concept of The Walking Dead game from TT Games, but this disscussion is for other time ;)

PS
I once heard that in history there was a boxer that was HUGE. And I mean it, maybe even bigger than Nikolai Valuev. He was like tank, he could be beaten up in ten round just to wait for a good moment for his ONE punch that would finish his opponent.
I reminded myslef about that after looking at your gif.

Sorry, I did not mean to appear mean :-)

Perhaps you missed on what I was trying to talk about here (and my english is certainly at least partly at fault) : I tried to explain it better on other comments. In short, some fears are even worse in games than they'd be in real life, that's the point I find the most interesting.

I also wanted to hear of other people's in-game phobias. I am not disappointed, there is a wide variety of unreasonable fears and I'm very interested in reading about them.

Sounds like Thalassophobia (fear of open water/sea). Odd that you don't experience it in real life though.

"perhaps because my mind manages to remind itself that there is nothing out there, no monsters, no uncharted mystery"

The oceans/seas are actually mostly unexplored, especially the deep oceans and sea floors. I believe we know more about the surface of the moon that we do about the depths of our oceans. And monsters, well, I wouldn't call them "monsters" but there are some huge animals out there (many that wouldn't hurt you, but some that would). And of course - with it being so unexplored - there are certainly countless creatures that haven't yet been discovered. Who knows what they could be.

So I'm not sure I share you view on real life deep diving ;P

I belive that uncharted teritories (and animals that leave there) you mentioned are far beyond the point where you can dive without bathyscaph so thats cool. Yet still I find some 'normal' water creatures kinda scary so... yeah :P

It depends. Many deep sea creatures go up to the surface during the night, and return to the depths before day breaks. And Giant/Colossal Squid are known as deep sea creatures that can also go right to the surface. I'm not sure if a Colossal Squid would attack a human (probably likely) but even if it wouldn't attack, just the thought of a 50ft squid swimming around me isn't exactly comforting ;P

Comment has been collapsed.

I didn't know that, I will have to check that out. I was also reffering to that horryfing creatures that lives at deepest points. They simply wouldn't surviave journey to surface due to pressure differencess.

And as far as giant squid would proparly scare the hell out of me, I'm good with 'simple' giant lobsters. I heard that there are islands where they don't mind people and just go out on streets. I wouldn't be able to elave in place like that ;_;

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah it all depends on what animal it is obviously. Some never leave the depths. Some can only come up to surface and withstand the pressure change for only a handful of hours before they have to return. There's a really good episode on the BBC's Planet Earth that deals with deep sea creatures. Really interesting the stuff it shows.

Hahah yeah there are a few places where thing's like that happen. Christmas Island might be the one you're thinking of?

I experience it in real life but at a lesser extent. I probably did not word well my impressions about the lack of mysteries in deep waters - it's true, there are mysteries and unknown species, and I should have reasons to be more afraid in reality.

What I meant was : there must be a mechanism, perhaps some form of denial, that reduces that fear in real life. Maybe because you die a lot in games, and thus expect all sorts of traps to occur and get you, while I've never had a first-hand experience of death (or near death). I suppose, in real life, that denial is what hides that fear.

I don't experience anything like it in games. In fact if I have some fears IRL I sometimes even like if they appear in games because I can face this thing without feeling disturbed.

And if I can suggest something, maybe read some articles or book about phobias, maybe that will help. It might sound harsh, but like JE9NA said - it's just a game.

I'm not complaining or anything, as I said, the completionist inside me overcomes the fear.

I'm just amused and curious about this phenomenon, and wanted to share it, and hear about similar experiences. Some people deemed this topic worthy of dicussing the matter. Some others, like JE9NA, missed the whole point and my reason for posting about it : "It's just a game".

This is exactly the topic at hand.

I play a lot of scary games, and like to immerse myself in dangerous (virtual) environments. I know it's just games. The fact that such a powerful fear might emerge from a game that has nothing scary is what intrigues me. Also, as I said, although the fear exists in real life, it is less powerful than in games, which, I think, makes the it's just a game argument completely void of contributive value.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hmm, I see your point, but I wouldn't just throw away 'it's just a game' argument (althought it's not really an argument more like statement or even not statement but I found it hard to express this in english :P).

I will try to explain it by going with movies example. When I was younger sometimes I was afraid of horrors, or more like monsters in this movies. But, on some point of life, I suddenly realize this is just a movie. Just like this, one day, one random tought and all magic was gone. Sure, sometimes jumpscares gets me but it's naturall to be startled by sudden change of image with sudden change of sound, that in most cases is just louder than in other parts of movie (or games).

Still, like you said, this is, indeed, interesting. Why do you feel like that in games? I can't explain it, I think some specialist could, but still I think that if you would tell to yourself, or more like convience yourself, that this is just a game maybe that fear would go away? IRL, when you are fighting your phobias and fears, something might go wrong. That little spider can suddenly jump, or dog can bark. While it's not life threating I totally understand that in that very moment someone can panic. Spider can jump on you, dog can attack, and you are in some kind of danger. But when playing a game? You are in your home, in your chair or on sofa and there is absolutly nothing that can do you any kind of harm. Maybe, if you want to get rid of that fear, this is a good start to try to overcome this feeling?

EDIT: One more idea - maybe this is the fear of unknown? It's 'easy' to fight with something when you can name it, but when you don't even know what you are facing it can be extremly terryfing. Big open waters - who knows what can hide in them? Yet again I feel that I couldn't really tell what I wanted due to my english skill but I hope you understand what I tried to say.
