Those are all indie games. I would add Transistor to that list if I were writing it- a spiritual successor to Bastion (same studio, similar style, different setting).

Just wanted to make sure you knew of it- a lot of people didn't follow both, and so if anyone mentions Bastion without Transistor I just, well, you know... assume. -_-

No, it's your prerogative to list whatever. I was just mentioning it because, you know, it's a shame if you don't know about it.

I'm one of those that managed to somewhat miss Transistor. Seen the name but never paid much attention to it. Now you mentioned it's roots I will be sure to have an eye out for it. So thanks!

A fun related discussion might be: What makes a game indie? If a professional developer uses Kickstarter to fund his game, is it indie for that reason? Does it have to do with the number of people who work on it? The size of the budget? I'm genuinely curious what people think.

It's obviously inspired by Minecraft, but does more to set itself apart than most games. I'd say it has a better vanilla survival than Minecraft. More visual appeal-- I have nothing against Minecraft graphics, but Terraria's style and lighting is superb-- more RPG aspects, more crafting, more interesting cave systems, etc.

frankly i dont know if its just me but i hated terraria it was just way to dark even with torches or in the day and it seemed a bit to complicated

Terraria is more adventury. It has an RPG approach, where you get different items, more health and such, and is more focused on bosses and dungeons than the sandbox building aspect. I quite like it

In no particular order

To The Moon (more of a great story than a great game, but the story is good enough for it to place)
Terraria
Minecraft (I mean, it very much was, and TECHNICALLY it still is I think)
Bastion
Mark of the Ninja
Cook, Serve, Delicious!
Besiege
N: The Way of the Ninja
Battleblock Theater
Hotline Miami

Honorary mentions would be Guacamelee, Banner Saga (I think it's indie?), World of Goo (and Little Inferno). Obviously there's the good ol' Super Meat Boy, Limbo, Braid etc. but I can't vouch for them because I haven't played (And the only own I own is Super Meat Boy). From what I've heard Legend of Grimrock had the best devs ever but haven't played.

Honorary mention for most overrated game ever is Superbrothers. I could see it being mildly OK on a tablet but on PC the music and art is nice but gameplay and every other element aren't even close to decent.

Minecraft is a very good game. Just because it is popular, and a lot of kids play it, it doesn't mean it is bad. Legend of Girmrock is pretty good. I've only played a little bit, but I enjoyed what I played. Super Meat Boy is awesome, but only play it if you like HARD platformers.

It is indeed, my note was more about its indie status. I'm intending to get around to Super Meat Boy soon.

A friend and I sitting in the back of the Computers classroom would play it in 9th grade all the time. The gameplay was so challenging and so smooth, easily also one of my favorite flashes.

Dust: An Elysian Tail

I'm not sure if these are all indie games.

I don't have a list of the best, since there are a lot of games that I haven't played yet, but I can list some indie games that I have greatly enjoyed.

Awesomenauts (Not for everyone)
Bastion (Still need to play Transistor)
Cook, Serve Delicious!
EDGE
Orcs Must Die! 2 (Only have played the second one and only in co-op)
Super Crate Box
Super Meat Boy
Super Puzzle Platformer Deluxe
Thomas was Alone
To the Moon
Unmechanical
VVVVVV

I know that this is a list of 12 games, but I feel that all of them deserve a spot and I already trimmed it down a bit.

These aren't my personal favorites, due to how often my taste in games change, but they are the ones that I've currently got the most play time with. And there are a few that I really love, but haven't spent as much time with.

Minecraft
Terraria
Don't Starve
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
Dungeons of Dredmor
Super Meat Boy
Postal 2
Revenge of the Titans
Drunken Robot Pornography
Cell HD: emergence

Gah, that was a hard decision to make, even after taking shortcuts to do so. There are far too many great indie games.

Hmm some of my best would be (not sure on order, despite the numbering):

  1. Aquaria

  4. Ben There, Dan That!

Maybe more later.

  2. The Weaponographist
  3. Windward
  4. BattleBlock Theater
  5. Psychonauts
  6. Castle Crashers
  7. Chuck's Challenge 3D

  9. Ratz Instagib

I can't believe nobody mentioned Antichamber yet. I own a lot of highly rated indie games, but unfortunately I haven't played many of them yet. Out of the ones I have played I would put these on the top:

  • Antichamber
  • Fez
  • Machinarium
  • Cave Story+

Going by Steam's reported play time:

  1. Kerbal Space Program
  2. Wasteland 2
  3. Euro Truck Simulator 2
  4. Prison Architech
  5. Dungeons of Dredmor
  6. FTL: Faster Than Light
  7. Terraria
  8. Space Pirates and Zombies
  9. Divinity: Original Sin
  10. Evochron Mercenary

I've put more time into #1 and #2 than almost any other game (they're #4 and #5 most play time according to Steam). I just finished Wasteland 2 a couple of weeks ago, and Kerbal Space Program is a game that never ends.

Runner's up:
Contrast
Papers, Please
Trine
Trine 2
Faerie Solitaire (I won that here!)
Stealth Bastard Deluxe
Hotline Miami
Penumbra Series
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Legend of Grimrock
Adventures of Shuggy (I won that here too!)
Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey
Saira
Closure
Rochard
Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP
SpaceChem
Beat Hazard
