WTF?? It used to be a trustworthy program, now it's like a hijacker software. It's not even authorized by steam (the green thingy on the top-left corner) and they want my Steam username, my password and Steamguard code to use it.

Anybody nows where to get the old version without all this shady hogwash?

Which requires you to have said game installed. I assume its just like SAM, but ment just to idle for cards. SAM allowed/s you to "run" your games w/o having them installed.

Yeah, I've never used SAM, Idle Master, or any program like this. If I want achievements or cards I'll just play the game myself. What's the point of having achievements you didn't actually earn, any way?

Here, 100% safe. Jshackles is trustable, he doesn't get your data etc.
Here a change from the last version he pointed out: "The Steam cookie data won't interfere with your browsing session. With the new version of Idle Master, you'll be prompted for your Steam user name / password inside a web browser which will be protected by Steamguard. Because of this, logging in or out of Steam with your browser won't affect the cookie information. This is especially useful for people who typically use Steam from multiple IP addresses. When you click (Sign In) on the main screen, you'll be given a browser window and asked to log in. If you have Steam Guard enabled, you'll be prompted for that as well. Once you're logged in, Idle Master will automatically get the required information (sessionid and steamLogin cookie) and store it for future use." The last version just made you get the sessioncookie manually.

And even if it didn't exist people would still idle games for cards and flood the market anyhow. Also what about if the game actually doesn't work for the person? Had that happen with a couple of games.

Additionally, once installed Idle Master will periodically check to make sure you're running the latest version." Taken from Link

so at the same time as asking for password it will connect "to check for new version" which possibly could mean uploading your login/password and steamguard file. Sounds really exploitable.
SAM was always better anyway, the only thing it lacks is auto switching games to idle, but to be fair you could just make autorun script for that in 15 seconds. Are they trying to make idle master emulate whole steam? I see no other reason why it would need login etc.

You've spent thousands of dollars on games that you've never even opened beyond idling them for cards. You haven't made anything from selling cards, you've just spent a few hundred less on games you're not going to play.

To the people wondering:
SAM (or Steam Achievement Manager):
Avoid it. While the program may be fine, you can get VAC banned when using it while on VAC supported servers and the program has the reputation for being used to cheat on getting achievements. I could see Valve banning it in the future.

Idle Master:
Safe, especially the old version. It was created by the same guy who made Enhanced Steam. All it does it simulate you playing your own games to get the card drops. It is nice for people who have a lot of games and don't have a lot of time and hard drive space. It is different from other idlers that Valve banned, such as TF2 idlers, because we already paid for the games with the drops and are just getting the cards in an easier way. More cards = more items on the market which = more money for Valve. Valve should have no reason to get mad at people for using the program, but then again, they have been doing some strange stuff lately.

Edit: Sorry for the wall of text.

Why would it need your login data then? I really don't get why Idle Master needs it when SAM doesn't (I get the risk with VAC servers and all, but the basic mechanic to get cards is the same and SAM doesn't need any login info...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

basically what sam/idle master do to idle ur cards is they emulate appid off a steam game. You could do same manually by editing appid file in steam directory and running some game for it to appear on steam as something else. Asking for login is very shady, I see no reason why it would require it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yep. I don't endorse SAM, but it's very fishy if a program does the same as another and asked you for credentials that apparently aren't needed. Better to just download the game and alt-tab out of it in case you want to be on the safe side.

They could also create a mode though where you don't have to give your login information and the program will instead idle every game for a set amount of time, say 3 hours. That should be enough for every game to drop all of it's cards. Sure maybe it's slower in some cases, but it's still fully automatic and a 100% safe.

It any way, giving out your login information is a mistake. Maybe idle master is okay and doesn't fuck you over (for the moment), but the potential threat is gigantic: From losing your steam account over getting your credit card charged to even granting them access to other services like your email and whatnot (due to similar passwords). And it sensitize you to trust other stuff in the future with your login data. Better not start doing. NEVER give out your login data for whatever reason. And here the reason is to farm cards for a few cents and save a very little amount of time. How can that ever be worth the risks? It's an extremely bold move to use this program.

to be fair you shouldnt use idle master while on vac protected server either

You are aware that TF2 idlers were made when TF2 was still paid game? And they were "just getting the drops in an easier way" too? Actually easier for Valve, too, as they were idling on custom server instead of Valve ones. End result - somehow, idler drops were deleted, idler maker banned, everyone but cheaters got cool little hat. Same excuses flew back then, Valve didn't cared, even despite cheaters adding the hats to market :>

Don't spout bullshit.

I've been using SAM while playing dota (idling for other games) and see my account, it's all clear.

I've been using several iterations of Idle Master and have never been hacked or VAC banned.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This is misinformation. SAM is completely safe to use UNLESS you try to use it in a VAC-enabled game while also PLAYING a VAC-enabled game. And even then the chances of you getting VAC-banned are dubious, it just isnt recommended and the warning is there just in case so you can make your own dumb mistakes.

Also Valve could not give a shit less if you use SAM to idle or add cheevos to a game, they learned their lesson with the coal that one year and arent going to tie any real rewards to achievements ever again.

I'd never give my login and password to anybody, let alone a program. So far there is no valid reason why it asked for it. I feel sorry for people that give that kind of information out just to get a few cards...

I've used it and found it trustworthy, got about 200+ cards from it or about 15 USD. As for bans, the only bans I've heard from using Idle Master were because people were idling games with it and they entered a VAC protected multiplayer server that detected a hack, resulting in a ban.
