It's about sweethearts only. You don't give presents to people you just like as friends, for example, as I suppose people do sometimes on Valentine's Day.
In Brazil people almost don't celebrate Valentine's Day at all. In the last years, Brazilian people started to know more about Valentine's Day, probably because of some commercial campaign or just because of the intense globalization accelerated by internet and social networks, but most people (and commerce, in general) still don't give a damn, since there's already Brazilian Carnival around the same season. The real "Valentine's Day" in Brazil (but only for sweethearts, as I said) is on June 12th.
Brazilian Sweethearts' Day was originated by a commercial campaign many years ago (in 1948) to solve the problems of low consumption in June. It was chosen on 12th because it's the eve of St. Anthony's Day, which refers to Anthony of Lisbon, especifically, known as a marriage saint.
In Brazil, June is the month of June Festivals, celebrated because of St. Anthony's Day (13th), St. John's Day (24th) and St. Peter's Day (29th). Brazilian syncretism embraces a big mix of different European peoples', indigenous peoples' and African peoples' creeds, so that mix originated some creeds that get a little from different origins, like St. Anthony's Day rituals,. So since June Festivals are deeply rooted in Brazilian culture, you don't have to be religious to celebrate them.
St. John's Day (referring to St. John the Baptist) is the most celebrated, while almost nobody remembers St. Peter's Day, and St. Anthony's Day is only slightly remembered, especially because of Sweethearts' Day, but also by supersticious single people who really believe in St. Anthony's power of matchmaking, so it was convenient to create a date for sweethearts on the eve, when those people who wish for a romantic mate make their rituals.
For most people, June Festivals are just about food, though. Despite the origin, Sweethearts' Day don't belong to June Festivals at all. It's all about presents, like Valentine's Day, and is not a public holiday as well. If you don't have a sweetheart on that date, you just ignore it (or envy people who have someone receiving presents, like some needy people do).

Yeah that's also how Valentine's Day is in Europe. It's still been entirely hyped and corrupted by marketing but friends don't get gifts unless they're "special" friends XD

Heh sounds about right. They had all the consuming they needed in February with Carnival already so they made up a day in June. Smart. Apparently in France, flower sales for the week of February 14th are more than what flower shops make the other 51 weeks of the year. So it does work.
So since June Festivals are deeply rooted in Brazilian culture, you don't have to be religious to celebrate them.
My gf is from Portugal so I know June is pretty much the same there. Lots of food and fireworks. It's pretty cool though.

Haha those needy people! Apparently France also had a solution for that because the French don't like lonely hearts I guess, and in the middle ages, there was a tradition in February that married women could go ahead and pick a single man at random to be their "sweetheart" ;) for the day. The Church was not pleased lol

Meanwhile in Russia, yesterday a law completely forbidding gender transition (legal and surgical plus hormonal therapy) passed the first reading in the Duma. And Putin basically ordered to develop a conversion therapy program. That's our way to celebrate the Pride Month, I guess. We are so fucked.
