I think (American/British) folk music really fits the bill, John Martyn, Iron & Wine, J. Tillman, and my personal favorite Fleet Foxes

My idea of calm music is certainly something that's soft, but I also put anything that's murmured or lacks the punch of hard rock and bombastic electronica. So this playlist will have a bit of soft electronica/indie pop, some very classic songs, and a bunch of folk music.
