I've done a bunch of giveaways... public, private, group, contributor.. overall I'd say about half the people that won my giveaways never said thanks to me, not even as a comment on the giveaway after they won. HALF. It's just depressing. One of the more recent winners didn't even redeem the game so I had to make a support ticket (of course one of the ones that didn't say thanks). I have games in my inventory I bought MONTHS ago just to give out on sg and I don't even want to anymore, they've just been sitting there. So, what have your experiences been with winners?

I say thanks in steam chat. No point thanking in a giveaway I didn't win :P

Uh... no point except that every giveaway that's got a 10-to-one entries-to-comments ratio makes the gift-giver feel like they're holding out a free game that cost them actual money to an uncaring sea of anonymous leeches.

Try and show some human empathy for the people who are giving you the opportunity to get free entertainment. Asshole.

I feel ok if the comment ratio is bad if the winner seems grateful. If the comment ratio is really high and the winner is an asshole, I feel worse because there were so many nice people that didn't win. :(

That's a bit of a different problem, but, yes, asshole winners suck more than people who just enter without saying thanks.

The one I did do, The guy adds me to steam, and says WHERE IS MY GAME? In bad english, I told him I didn't even know it ended, give me a few and he started to get mad and crap, It's a shame I even had to give it to the ungrateful prick.

<snicker> I would've reported him to Steam for harrassment and pretended that SteamGifts wasn't involved since he's got that attitude. Yeah, it earns you a not-received (at least temporarily), but he might get an attitude check from Steam Support. lol.

But, good on you for following through even in the face of horrible attitude (or at least bad communication due to the language barrier).

Considering no-one has any sway wot-so-ever on the results of a giveaway I'd say it's more appropriate to initially express gratitude for the making the giveaway, unless they're thanking for fulfilling of promise & sending the game. Personally, if I'm a recipient of a win I like to thank the giver - it's just basic manners. Yet quite often it's done via steam chat & I don't really see the point in adding a "thank you" to a closed giveaway, especially when you perhaps have already thanked the person... I mean would they even see it??

Basic manners go a long way IMO, yet it wouldn't bother me if some don't share the same view.

I check closed giveaways to see if the person said thanks, if they didn't do it through steam. A few people said thanks there after the giveaway ended... It's better than nothing

I don't always say "thanks" when I enter giveaway (mostly do it when I'm really thankful for the chance of winning something I've wanted) but I do my best to at least thank for winning (that's why it's great when op gives the game by adding the winner on steam - I can thank him personally). With my giveaways, I've been giving the games through steam, having little chat with the winners. It's good to talk to some strangers once in a while and wishing them good day/night ^^

This may sound a bit too "zen", but you should not make your happiness dependent on external factors.

I don't really see why people thanking you would matter that much. Some people have been raised in a barn, some people are dead inside and some people are just plain [how much can I swear here again?]. I bet there are some people more grateful for the mere change of winning a game than some actual winners ever will be; but perhaps too afraid to say anything, thinking it'll be awkward. One genuine show of appreciation should hopefully matter more than twenty silent recipients.

… and if it all really gets to you so much, then don't make any more giveaways for a while. You should only gift people things if it makes you warm and fuzzy inside. For example, I got fed up with this community a bit ago (for different reasons), so I gave away a game on Twitter instead. Given, the calibre of my contributions is much smaller, so I don't matter as much, but the principle stands.

In an ideal world it wouldn't matter... but it does to me :P and I did leave for a while, then the first giveaway I did for months and the guy didnt even redeem the gift. it just got to me >.>

My sympathies, truly… amongst tons and tons of whiny threads I can see from your post something different, something honest. It does make me feel a bit sad, for you.

Looking at your giveaways - while I try to never judge someone by the amount they've gifted - I can say that you've chosen a stellar selection of games and that should be appreciated. I do believe that you are not asking for too much, especially for this kind of contribution; thank you for that. I hope the recipient of your next giveaway is decent human being with basic social skills. :)

for public giveaways i just say thanks when i win~ for group/private thats another story

Just make private giveaways in the future, share them with your friends only and you should be fine. There are already some people who are making bots to enter giveaways for them because "there are just too many of them and they cant get to enter them all" or some who are using thank you scripts (which is even more of a dick move than not saying thanks)
I always felt sick whenever i saw one of those "we need a thank you button" threads and there was one guy who said something like "i only say thanks so people wouldnt give me hard time but i dont really mean it"

1 decade ago

but if you only share with friends... then you don't make new friends. :/ I like making a variety of giveaways.

lol i do say thanks when i get the game, by chat with the gifter or comment on the gifter's profile.

about your problem, if you decided to do public giveaways remember not all people are good, or they just forget to say thanks, you should stick with private (drop link in a group chat room), and group giveaway (i recommend S.Gifts since there're active people of the community).

the last time,it's you decision to do good things on your own, it doesn't matter if they're gonna say "thanks" or not. just forget it and you'll feel better.

Some guy who felt its necessary to open a topic about me with false accusations after he was kicked from one of the private groups due to his dickish behaviour. If i remember correctly he said he will quit Steamgifts but i still see him in public giveaways, i guess his leeching urge was too strong. On a bright side, at least hes saying thanks now in every giveaway he enters so i guess he learned some manners by now (assuming hes not using some kind of script)

I joined recently SG, 3 weeks ago to be more precise, I made the first one, guy didn't comment but said thanks to me directly on Steam.

second one, very positive, said thanks on comment and was so clearly delighted about winning the prize that went into Steam and said thanks to me about 5 times, he even left this message in my profile: "Thank you SO much for Trine 2! Always wanted this."

latest one this week didn't said thanks on giveaway but said thanks to me directly on Steam.

but I absolutely get your point and feel bad about you has I read every single comment when I make a giveaway, 1 cool guy not joining even left a very nice comment thanking me for my generosity in my 3rd giveaway.

and of course I never forget to say thanks on giveaways for the opportunity to win a free game.

so, since I joined I can say it is positive and the community has been nice towards me. hope your experience improves and you can relax about it :)

I would, but unless someone is already on your Friends list, Steam makes it strangely difficult to send a direct message to them. I gave props to both the people I've won things from on videos in my LP series on YouTube, so there's that at least.

That's not a very good way to reach them and sincerely thank them. Especially if they don't check to see if they're winners have youtube accounts for their thanks.

Maybe it's just you OP. In the 7 giveaways I've given - all the winners thanked me; and in the 5 giveaways I've won - I've said thanks to all the giveaway makers. Then again my numbers are insignificant compared to the giveaways you've done.

Well the first giveaway I made which was not too long ago, I know the winner thanked me. And while I'm more of a person to say thanks once/if I won, I find that not all games are sent through Steam (I think), but if I were to receive said gift, and through a chat with the person I'd say thanks. but I found that just in case, I'll say thanks in advance should I win.
Comment was longer than I anticipated.
