Game devs say it is a roguelike-like. It is, what it is.

That's because it's so far away from actual roguelikes. They're right.

Definitely Roguelike-like.

It only takes some elements, like say procedural generation of levels or permadeath, from roguelikes. There are significant deviations from a true roguelike which is turn-based and typically an RPG featuring just one character - although it could be argued the true character in FTL is the ship and in that perspective some RPG-like mechanisms are indeed present:

Hit Points = Hull Points
Class = Ship Type
Skill system = System/Subsystem Upgrades

Anyway, if you want to see for yourself, just try Rogue (yes, it's an actual game) or another one of the classic RLs like Angband Vanilla or netHack. ADOM is also a good example and a great game.

The question is what does it take from Rogue. And if it takes enough elements, then it's roguelike. The second (and subsequent) "likes" is redundant.

It is an action game with deleting saves, like all roguelikes these days. The discussion is that the genre of roguelikes got corrupted since Binding of Isaac got popular. Turn-based, random, and deleting saves, got replaced by high intensity, complete randomness, and a lack of saves mini-game.

Then call it BoI-like. Piling up "likes" is surely not the way to go.

Roguelike-like.

Cause I've discovered that people that play stuff like Crawl get REALLY PISSED OFF when you call it a roguelike.

Oh hey, its this thread again. If memory serves, this is the part where someone vaults in and declares that the Legend of Zelda is a series of RPGs. I don't get the point of adding another like on the end. It either is or isn't. And it is.

It is a Roguelike-like? Or it is a series of RPGs?
