I only have one steam account and only plan on playing on that account however with Limbo being free today it got me thinking.
Would it be a bad idea to create a second Steam account using a second email and is it breaking Steam rules?

Pros:
Adding free games you already own.
Multiple accounts means multiple cards from same game which equals money.
Higher odds for card drops.
Ability to add another "friend" without having a friend...
More?

Cons:
Having to deal with two Mobile authenticaters

Do you have more than one Steam account?

People overuse the accounts totally obsessively

Adding free games you already own.

I mean, you'll still only be able to play one game at a time, so I don't really see why you'd need two copies (especially of games like Limbo) but I guess if you want to, go for it.

but you can farm over 9000 accounts at once. it only takes 2 accounts and steamtradematcher to make a full set of cards for any game.

You don't have to deal with two mobile authenticaters. I have 2 accounts and using one number.

I believe that's impossible?

I was using it so it is possible. Valve doesn't say you can't have 2 accounts. But there was a limit if i remember correctly.

I saw one dude with like 60 accounts to claim free games/giveaways and then farm for cards...

He even named those accounts Farmbot01 till Farmbot60

Hmm if all 60 accounts had claimed 20 free games and each game had $0.30 worth of card drops the dude would have made $360.00. That seems like a lot of work, then again I've probably done more work for less though.

If people worked as hard to find a job and keep it and they do to not work (oh, the irony of it) then they might actually make something of their lives.

Not sure what farming money on steam has to do with finding a job.

Anyone who has a job and is serious about building a solid employment history and pursuing an actual career and making their life better in the process it is not going to waste their time farming for pennies if they have any sense. That's what it has to do with it.

I agree that farming for pennies is a waste of time, but I don't know how to explain it.. just watching my steam wallet go up from farming cards gives me satisfaction.

Maybe it's kinda like JRPGs, beating a boss after hours of farming is more satisfying than beating a boss in another game without farming. Earning $100 steam wallet from farming cards gives me more satisfaction than earning $1000 in real life.

Do you really think that steam cards are primary source of income for anybody here? Like, there is that guy, who does nothing whole month but sits in front of PC, claiming free keys and trading "goods" in the meantime of farming?

Most people do it for fun, and extra things that are left can be always sold for more steam $$$ and making more money. Why on Earth I should spend 18$ on a nice game for a giveaway if I can spend 0$ because I have an inventory of over 7k farmed cards that have no use?

You won't make "big profitz" from steam cards, regardless of what one famous Steam user says, but you'll still make enough to satisfy you. Claiming a free game from gleam or similar takes maybe 1 minute, if there are many tasks. Sending this key to ASF bot takes 2 seconds, and you get let's say 0.10$ back (but usually it's much more).

So my work is equal to 6$ per hour, which is probably more than at least significant percent of what people are doing as their "primary" job, and it doesn't cost me anything but 10 clicks.

Of course, I'm not spending my entire day searching for free games and farming them, I treat it more like an extra opportunity that I already have. And if after all of that you still consider that steam cards are not profitable pennies, then I'd suggest to recalculate yourself based on actual examples. You'll get better numbers than the ones I used, because I lowered them for a reason.

It's like buying a product from the shop, receiving -20% for the next buy and considering that it's worthless trash which you can throw away, while knowing exactly that you visit the same shop tomorrow and you could make use of that coupon. If you have millions on account, maybe that's true, it's not really worth an effort for you, but then what are you doing on this website? Isn't time worth much more for you to not waste it replying in SG discussions?

Just to let you know games like CSGO changed the VAC policy.

If you get VAC/OW banned on one account linked to that particular number, all other accounts linked to that number will also be VAC/OW banned for CSGO.

I rarely play online games so I don't have to worry about VAC bans. Also I wasn't planning on linking the accounts, they would be two separate accounts with two separate emails.

You must spent at least $5 on each account so you can trade cards with your ownself

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's not true. You can have your main account add them (since the $5 restriction is only for adding people, not having others add you) and trade fine as long as you wait the initial 15 days or so and don't mind trade holds on top of that.

Yes, you can trade, but all cards that you drop will be untradable until you unlock the account.

So in the end, unless you want to accept already farmed cards from somewhere else, yes, 5$ rule considers you.

Wait....really? Hmm....weird. I made an account pretty recently (in April or so) and it let me send a trade with cards back to my main account.

EDIT: Never mind, I think I bought a game on there. I have a newer account as well but haven't tested it on there yet, so....I got no clue. I'm dumb.

Well, while developing ASF I probably spent so much time on analyzing how exactly everything works regarding alt accounts that all my words in this subject can be taken without actual checking :3.

True, however the next purchase I make for my main account I could make on the 2nd account and then gift it to the main account which would unlock the 2nd account at no additional cost.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yup. If you're about to spend real money on Steam, then it doesn't cost you anything to activate the second account. I'm doing it constantly - buying a nice unbundled game for a giveaway, and activating an account "by the way", which pays me back the full amount.

I created a second account over a year ago planning to use it to farm cards, but never got to actually do that, instead I just add free games and treat it as a backup account in case that someday something bad happens to my main. At least I wouldn't be starting from zero. yeah, I know, kinda dumb

If your alt account has been friend with your main one for at least 1 year, you can trade between them with only a 1 day trade hold.

Yeah, I know. But I'm too lazy to get extra keys when something is free, and then farm the cards, and I basically gave up after farming one game and left the account dormant.

Personally, I find the whole idea of people having alt accounts for card farming really weird, but then, I'm not one of those people who stock on free games from Gleam.io giveaways.

Reading through the Steam Subscriber Agreement I didn't find anything related to multiple accounts, so I assume they either are fine with it, or just don't care.

As for dealing with two authenticators, you could just use ASF as one for your alt, on top of card farming, and you could also set it up to automatically send cards to your main, to simplify the process!

Just be aware that you'll need to wait 7 days after activating Steam Guard, to be able to trade without holds.

FYI, if you abuse the system like this, you might actually get banned. I remember a guy and his >1000 alts being community banned after the launch of trading cards beta. He farmed TF2 cards with all of his accounts and sold them on the market (other people couldn't even sell their own cards because he was all over the place). I don't think Valve care about people having 5-10 alts, but having 1000 alts for farming purpose is a whole other story.

I guess the card farm on free games could be interesting but i am far to anxious about steams rules or having my main acount closed because steam didnt approve. I know there is nothing on that mather in the Agreements but who knows if it won't change. Yup i'm a bit paranoid

I have two accounts (well, four technically, but I don't even remember what my original Steam account's login name or associated email was, and the other is a fake Russian store region account that has two games on it and I also don't remember what its email even was). Second one is mostly use to dump bundle leftovers and set up as a free-for-all 1:1 card trader account to let people complete sets if they want to.

By the way, I think Valve expects people to have several accounts as they don't really care if you associate one pone number and email with more than one. Also, with pro online players, it is customary to have one main and several other accounts you practise at (or hide your identity so you won't get spammed/trolled).

"Having to deal with two Mobile authenticators" is enough reason to not bother with a second account.
If we could sell stuff on market without using mobile authenticator, then it would've been fine. But now I gotta install that virtual machine thingy to run android on my PC and use another steam application with it.
