I don't really watch youtube as much. I can say I generally enjoy watching top 10 lists. Only one I remember out of the top of my head is DangerDolan. Furthermore I really enjoy watching GradeAUnderA. Those are the only ones I actually know I watch. Not subscribed to any, but I do generally watch all GradeAUnderA episodes I hadn't seen yet once in a while.

My top channels (no particular order):

Jared Dines (music / comedy)
The DickeyDines Show (comedy)
LegendOfTotalWar (best Total War campaign player)
Achievement Hunter
Let's Play
THFE Productions (mostly online Total War Battles and Total War news)
Lionheartx10 (Total War campaign player)

I'm not subscribed to many, and I'm actually interested in the regular content of even fewer.

  1. Retsupurae (game riffing)
  2. Retsupurae
  3. Gaming Garbage (gamemaker riffing; the hosts split up, so its heyday is over)
  4. Retsupurae
  5. Jeremy Jahns (movie reviews)
  6. Jim Sterling (video game industry critic)
  7. Retsupurae
  8. ChipCheezumLPs (LPs)
  9. Waterflame (music)
  10. Retsupurae

As a side note, does anyone know if there's a way to stay subscribed to a channel but hide their videos from your main feed?

First of all I'm confused.(why so much "Retsupurae", trying to make the list count 10??). In the procces of creating this thread I had a feeling that I've missed something and now i remember what i had missed 2 more channels: Jeremy Jahns and Chris Stuckmann.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I can't remember being able to control what content goes in your feed since the days when you could subscribe to someone's activity (before that branched off into Google+).

So, SA Goon or did you come across Lowtax/Slowbeef/etc and just branch out from there?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The latter- I don't have anything to do with SomethingAwful. A friend showed me a Retsupurae video several years ago and I've been a big fan of the channel ever since(I've even downloaded many of their videos to my phone). Some time afterwards I came across Chip and Ironicus and then Lowtax and Shmorky.
TBH I love to joke about video games myself, and I wish I had a similar opportunity to do so. I have a channel that I started for that purpose but I haven't been able to do much with it beyond a few videos I recorded with my bro while he was in town.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ah. Had to wonder because I'd assume most who know of Lowtax are.

I'm in the same kind of boat. Knew of SA but but stumbled upon retsupurae during the billy/cornshaq era. Good times :)
On an unrelated note, I found Waterflame from a Game Boy programming example

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, Lowtax's stuff was pretty obscure(and not for everyone, I guess). I think I was linked to him from a comment on a RP video.
As for RP themselves, I found them later than that- I think it was somewhere in the middle of the Darkseed 2 riff. I looked at all the older videos too, though, and the Billy ones were definitely some of my faves.
That GB thing is pretty cool, and a nice little anecdote. Doesn't do Waterflame justice tho. :P
P.S. Nice avatar.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thanks, Vince. I think most people know Lowtax as the guy who got knocked out by Uwe Boll, haha.

And wow, Darkseed. Did you know Darkseed 2 is only around a 2-3 hour long game if you know what you're doing?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I heard that! However, I doubt we would have gotten the same "experience" if it was done by a competent longplayer. :P
And wow- I didn't know what you were talking about with Uwe Boll, so I googled it, and... Damn. Bizarre stuff. What kind of asshole challenges his critics to a fistfight?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

True that. Especially the failed carnival games.

It was pretty ingenious. Free publicity, legal since it was in a ring and a legitimate event, plus it was little known that he actually had boxing experience. Imagine if Digital Homicide challenged Sterling and other critics to a boxing match.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

"All publicity is good publicity", I guess. Still, a real douchey thing to do, imo... and it definitely doesn't invalidate any criticism of his movies. I don't think I've seen any of them myself, except In The Name of the King, which I didn't know was one of his until a couple hours ago. I actually had fun with it, but it was pretty simple and not based on a game (to my knowledge), so it would have been hard to butcher.
Anyway, for a proper metaphor, DH would have to challenge Sterling to something they're secretly good at... Which severely limits their options, I think. :P

  • Scishow: Pretty cool if you like science news. They've also got a channel all about space stuff.
  • Ashens: Funny reviews about the junk you'd find in a dollar store. Better than it sounds. If you want a good sample, search "ashens violin".
  • The Game Theorists: Theories about video game logic. It's better than talking to myself about the same things.
  • Gaijin hunter: Lots of news and tutorials about Monster Hunter. A lot of my list won't be interesting if you don't play those games.
  • Videos From Kotowari: A Monster Hunter video podcast I quite enjoy.
  • Etalyx: Does quick gameplay videos to sort of review games, sometimes does longer series. Great energy and his taste in games lines up well with mine.
  • Redmondstache: Created the Monster Hunter Red Run, which basically makes it hardmode.
  • Superbrioche666: French Let's Player who inspired me to make videos. If you speak French, I recommend his Pikmin videos.
  • BAHFest: Silly fake science for when you need something absolutely absurd.

Indeed, the Souls series is directed towards a somewhat specific type of gamers so yeah, not everyone will enjoy them. Personally I prefer watching the runs rather than playing it because it requires some commitment I don't have the time for :P

TheBrainScoop can be silly once in a while but overall it shows a lot about the "backstage" of museums and field work, which you don't really find a lot of? I've been following it for some years, when it was just about a girl showing how dissections worked haha.

TBOI, as a rogue-like from Team Meat, can allow you to do some pretty ridiculous stuff but because of RNG I prefer to just watch the videos. It can be a nice time-waster because you won't spend much over an hour until you get to the end/die but meh, it's as they say, "tastes aren't arguable" .

Hmm, gonna be hard to narrow it down to just 10. In alphabetical order(because I'm not gonna be sorting out which I like more between these ;_;):

  1. Crash Course: Incredibly useful and enjoyable educational channel. A bit ironically it's called "Crash Course" but actually goes more in-depth in the subjects it teaches than most channels I watch.
  2. Cryaotic: The only let's-player I enjoy watching on any sort of regular basis, because he's one of the few who seem to actually respect the games he plays rather than just try to make fun of them to sound funny all the time, and I love how immersed he gets in the stories. Also, that voice <3
  3. Extra Credits: The best source of thoughts and insight onto video games as an art form. As someone who loves both video games and art I found their videos absolutely fascinating, and their Extra History series is just awesome.
  4. Hannah Witton: Feminist Vlogger. Her "Drunk Advice" series is absolutely hilarious and is what originally introduced me to several people on this list!
  5. lacigreen: I come from a very conservative family and go to a very conservative school so we've never had any sort of sex ed(well, except the scientific aspect of sperm-meets-egg but absolutely nothing about safety or the social aspect of sex). Laci's taught me everything I know about sexual safety and ethics and I am oh-so-thankful for it.
  6. Numberphile: Incredibly interesting maths videos. I love the subjects they talk about and the way they present them.
  7. PBS spaaace Time: Very interesting, in-depth, comprehensive videos about astronomy and the nature of the universe. What's not to love?
  8. Savannah Brown: Talented, incredibly awesome poet. Author of "What guys look for in girls" and "Hi, I'm a slut" slam poems. I pre-ordered her book around a month ago and every day I wake up hoping it's arrived. (Still hasn't :s)
  9. SciShow spaaace: The best place on the internet to keep up with astronomy news(of which there's always so much!).
  10. Tom Scott: Very interesting, educational and enjoyable channel. Videos about linguistics, programming and computer stuff and other stuff.

Honorable mentions: Emma Blackery, Vsauce, TotalBiscuit, doddleoddle, TaylorSwiftVEVO, Quirkology, TheRPGMinx, Minutephysics/MinuteEarth, and CGPGrey.

BunnyHop is a real journalist with the degree, so he got really strong points, and Errant Signal offers deep philosophical view on games, sometimes overthinking things.
