Here comes the puzzle. First, numbers.

the unknown value X is represented by the numbers' positions(1,2,3,4&5), and their value(0-9).

Edit: This seemed to be a bit confusing... so here's some examples: if the roots found are 1,2,2&3, then the code may look something like 2x2xx(positions=1&3,value=2&2). Or if the roots found are 1,2,9&5, then the code may look something like 2xxx9(positions=1&5,value=2&9), 9xxx2(positions=1&5,value=9&2), 95xxx(positions=1&2,value=5&9), 59xxx(positions=1&2,value=9&5), x1xx9(positions=2&5,value=1&9) or x9xx1(positions=2&5,value=9&1).

X can be found by solving the following equation.

x^4 - 12x^3 + 51x^2 - 88x + 48 = 0

note: There are 2 equal roots.

Edit: The 2 equal roots are not positions.

Second, letters. Take the first letter of the answer.

  1. (0,3)-(0,0)-(0,1)-(1,1)-(1,0)
  2. on some Chinese keyboard, this key has 日 on it's right-bottom corner.
  3. X Sparkle

Which letters are capitalized? 1 of them.

Edit: It's the one on left-most of the keyboard out of the three letters.

Note: you need to solve the equation first to find the numbers' positions, then the rest are the letters, with the permutation of 1-2-3(there maybe numbers in between them)

This is the solution:

First, numbers.

By factorizing the equation x^4 - 12x^3 + 51x^2 - 88x + 48, you'll get (x-4)^2(x-3)(x-1), which the roots are 4, 4, 3 & 1.

The 2 equal roots are not positions, so the position would be 1 & 3, and the values are 4 & 4, which means the code discovered so far is 4x4xx.

Second, letters.

1. (0,3)-(0,0)-(0,1)-(1,1)-(1,0)

Simple enough, like connecting the dots, once you do it, you'll soon find out you drew a letter.

2. on some Chinese keyboard, this key has 日 on it's right-bottom corner.

The keyboard I recently bought. Look at letter D.

3. X Sparkle

If you're a brony, the answer is quite obvious. The answer is Twilight sparkle.

After those, you'll get the code 4h4dt.

Finally, capitalized letters.

It's the one on left-most of the keyboard out of the three letters.

Look at your keyboard, it's D.

So once you solved those, you will get the code 4h4Dt.

Congratulations to those 46 users who solved the puzzle.

I dont seem to understand any of it :S
I solved the equation, with 3 numbers, not sure if i didnt that right or not and i figured out question 2, im not sure about question 1, is it that obvious or is there more to it? number 3 is the same as 1, also are they meant to be capital or not? Not very clear instruction on solving the puzzle :(

"the unknown value X is represented by the numbers' positions, and their value. X can be found by solving the following equation."

which one of the 4 roots is suuposed to be the answer? and, what do you mean by 'positions'?
are the first 2 link letters a number? followed by 3 letters? I dont understand

Good luck to the lucky one to get this game to work... it is broken like hell because of the Ubisoft DRM :( (I did not managed it to start the game, always crashed after the first logo and the help suggestions on the game forum did not help as well)

That's... a special kind of pathetic. Not even Yatterman hates ponies to the extent that even seeing it in a tiny tab when that wasn't even the focus of the picture would make him quit a puzzle giveaway.

X^2 - 2X + 1 = 0

2 Answers, they are both equal.

The same thing applies to the equation above.

In that case Delta = 0 so there is 1 answer and it is 1.

x=(2 ± sqrt(2^2 - 4(1)(1)))/2

x=(2+0)/2 / x=(2-0)/2

x=1 / x=1

There are 2 answers, not 1, it's just that they're equal.

way to overcomplicate things?

Rather oversimplification on your side I'd say.
Simple and yet correct way: A quadratic function ALWAYS has 2 roots. (They may by the same, they may not be real numbers, but they are always two.)
Now what would be the logic of disappearing and reappearing of one of those now and then? I can't see any...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They are the same because delta is 0 so You shouldnt say thre are two of them. Well, of course You can say it that way but its just overcomplicating stuff : p
Anyway atleast now I know what You meant in the riddle ; p

You have to think of it like this: A quartic equation yields four roots, not necessarily distinct. ;)

Not liking this puzzle at all, it seems like guessing rather then actually solving anything. all of them have several answers so either you try the many combinations, or get lucky.
Thanks for trying! maybe next time i wont have to do so much guessing.

how many numbers, and what is the order of number and letters?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

3 letters & (5-3) numbers

the numbers' position & values are equal to X, which can be found from the equation above.

The letters' position: 1,2,3. There maybe numbers in between or outside them.

why don't you just say something like: Xx#x# ?

and I got 3 answers for X..

and I don't get the X sparkle hint..

Because the positions are also part of the riddle

The Sparkle Hint is definitivly not difficult if you have basic knowledge about a certain subject. It is also googleable with informations from this topic.

The inconsistent usage of variables (X...) is kind of irritating, though.

So "X" in "X Sparkle" is also a variable? I thought it was just a letter and the whole question had nothing to do with math...

Since there's 3 roots for the equation, that means that you have to trial and error which 2 numbers to use?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There are four roots, but two of them are the same.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's not my question. There are 3 unique roots but only 2 numbers in the URL. Are we supposed to try trial and error the 3 combinations or is there something i'm missing here.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I believe that 2 of the roots refer to where the numbers are in the URL, and the other 2 are the actual numbers in it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

is there a way to tell which numbers are the location numbers, and which are the actual numbers? or do we have to guess THAT

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There's only a few possibilities so guess away. ;)

Though I found none of my attempts to mix the numbers and letters - which I would think I got right - were correct. Unless the capitalization hint is incorrect or the order of the letters or maybe you're supposed to count backwards or whatever. xD

Anyway, very intrigued in what the correct answer will be.
