The explanation IS short and simple. It's the example that is complicated.

You are correct, there are only 4 letters, and those in the puzzle have more than one blank in each row. But you can use that. So for example in the first puzzle, there are 3 A's in the top (and the bottom). Which means that one starts with an A, one starts with a blank then an A, and one starts with two blanks then an A. But if two of them start with blanks, and there are only two blanks in each row, then every other column starts with a letter.

The logic you have to use is very much like that of a sudoku, but more so.

That is odd. There is a unique solution to these, and a number of others have gotten this. Could it be a formatting issue? Remember to use an X for a blank. So the solution in the example is BXDCA, CBDAX
