Well, today, I was browsing Steam Russian Store and I was shocked to see the prices. They were like 50% to 70% of the normal Steam Store. Now, I wonder if one buys those games, will it be region restricted too?

Take a look yourself :- http://store.steampowered.com/?cc=ru

If it's region restricted it would say it is like this [Note; If this game is bought in russian it will be only played by the one who lives in the country] <-- that's not the exact words, but it would say, if it doesn't say it it's good as ROW

I didn't have anyone say GTFO, they all just wanted to do business and be on their marry way. Tried sweet talking (lol) to a few and they got pissed and wanted the trade to be as fast as possible. Im not saying they were rude, I was just disappointed. Not saying that its a matter of nationality though so dont worry.

Get with the times man.

As for your question, only a small selection of games have region locks, the rest will work anywhere.

Thanks for the answer!

Comment has been collapsed.

This 'small selection' currently includes virtually all AAA pre-orders and recently released games, also a lot of AAAs from last year. Sadly developers went greedy, so no cheap expensive games anymore.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Most of them will be. Better not try anything. Even though a game can be activated, you still might get a ban since it's basically a fraud.

Permalink

Ah, Thanks for the answer!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, that's not entirely true. If you try to buy games in Russian Store using some proxy or VPN to bypass regional restrictions then yes, you will be punished. But if some real Russian guy buy a gift legal way and then send it to you, you have nothing to worry about.
Note that many honourable SG members are Russians. Do we have to be afraid of their games now?

For mother Russia!

Some kind of games, that are selling @ /?cc=ru are not region restricted... You can check it here : http://steamdb.info/

Comment has been collapsed.

Where can we check that info about region-restriction on steamdb ? (On which page/tab of each page?) Thanks!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

  1. Search for your game.
  2. Look in packages for your RU version (RU/CIS)
  3. Go inside
  4. Look for something like that:
PurchaseRestrictedCountries AM AZ BY GE KZ KG MD RU TJ TM UZ UA LV LT EE - This means that yo can activate only in this countries.
onlyallowrunincountries AM AZ BY GE KZ KG MD RU TJ TM UZ UA LV LT EE - this means that you can play only in those countries.

Examples:
Activation locked and launch is locked aswell: http://steamdb.info/sub/16192/
Activation locked, can be played outside those countries: http://steamdb.info/sub/16143/
If there's no RU/CIS package, then game isn't locked. Or if there's RU/CIS package look if there is those restriction lines with countries. If no, then you're good to go.

If there's only Purchase Restriction, so you can activate with VPN and play without. But on you own risk.

It will say so on that store page. Also, don't forget to add your own region after visiting that page again (http://store.steampowered.com/app/44350/?cc=us if you are from the states).

I use http://steamprices.com for that. Clicking on a foreign price gets you to that page, and it will say something about region restriction or not. Also, clicking on your own price again sets your region back to your own (so you don't see all those Russian prices when browsing the store).

Most of the games aren't restricted. Some bigger and newer AAA's are, though. Normally a good way to find out about regional restrictions would be to visit http://cdr.thebronasium.com/ (currently down) and look at which sub-ids (regional versions) are available for this or that game.

Too bad for all, but I must say the true: some kind of russians are very bad... IMHO over ~60-70% of them are trying to scam you... >_< Or worth... They can buy you the gift, and then ask support to send it back, cause of mistaken gift (or something else, like buying items from stolen CC)

Not a long time ago someone tried to scam me for cheap Angry Birds key (costs around 1-2$)

So, be carefull. Dont accept friendship from anyone here.

/ Да ребят, кидать - не хорошо, так что лучше хоть кто-то предупредит первым, что у нас такие вот грустные дела...

(this msg ^ was for RU / CIS steam community I'm saying, that it's not so good, to be scammer and I'm trying to keep this community in attention)

Some are, some not. Here is an instruction.
Also if you want to see all prices without switching between regions, then you need Chrome or Opera extention or Chrome/Opera/FireFox userscript.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I had a very nice extension for firefox which not only showed me the rates in other regions, it also converted that price into my own currency (using xe.com), and then showed a percentage of how much more/less I would be paying.
It's the addon I miss most after moving to Chrome :(

Actually, it is, if you're willing to risk getting bans from Steam and use some VPNs and some other stuff...

Unless you're a big buyer it would be cheaper to just check steamtrades to find some Russian traders.
