I still miss the ancient HP I got 11 years out of, did so many assignments and played so many awful Miniclip Flash games on that thing. Yanking out the HD before I took it to get recycled felt like I was killing an old friend :/

Yeah, most laptops only have a 1-3 year warranty, so I'm fairly certain that yours is no longer covered, and unless it was the just the drive that failed, the cost to repair it (if the parts are even still available) will probably be more than it's worth. :(
Best of luck on the new job prospect, though! Even if you don't meet all of the qualifications, they may be willing to bring you on board and train you in whatever skills you still need. The right attitude can sometimes go much farther than whatever credentials you have on your resume. :)

Visit your local recycling center (if you have one).
You can normally pick up laptops there for free if they have an ecycle bin.
I've got a few i3 to i5s so far. Best one is a 3rd gen i5 with 8GB of RAM.

I've picked up 6 laptops with Win 7, Vista, or 10 on them + one Samsung Chromebook.
All of them work, were quickly factory reset, and are now working just fine in my cluster.

5 years is a long time. My own laptop reaches that age this year, and it's quite... "tired" as well. Good luck on the job. And request a work laptop for free ;)

True, some employers can do that. Maybe just remove all the spy crap on the computer, as long as your contract doesn't state you cannot. Anyways, new job, money for new computer. If you are going for a 13.3" with an ssd, they are really quite affordable, small and light these days. Not for gaming, but we have desktops for that :D
