Ever since I was little I have loved legend of zelda. Now you know how so many people are like redeads are scary? I am fine with those. The thing that gets me is the big octos from wind waker. They are so bad it causes me to get a nose bleed by just looking at it. I cant talk about it. It just feels like a stone when I try to say it. I don't think it is what I fear but maybe a memory associated with it. When I first got the game I was fine with them. Then my save file got deleted by my little bro and like all situations like that I just moved on to another game. Then one day while playing it one popped up and I just felt so anxious. I felt like I was gonna die just by looking at it. I need someone to do a little psychiatry on me. It isnt just the redeads. Any creature in a body of water with big eyes (glowing is worse) Or something huge in the water.

This Big Octo you say?

Yeah, scary mofo indeed. In the sea, it's frightening, but outside, it seems cute.

Here's something a bit scary

So basically you have a phobia/anxiety. Sometimes it's caused by a traumatic experience and those can or cannot be resolved. Sometimes it's caused by a fear of the unknown and you can be eased into it, discovering it's not so bad after all. Other times it just happens and there is nothing to treat due to medical anxiety and that becoming your trigger, so you simply have to avoid it for the rest of your life and beat down anyone who tries to force it on you. This could be clowns, spiders...many things people will always have fears/anxiety/phobias of and it's normal.

If you want to overcome it though, it'll likely be along the lines of Batman. You never really overcome it, you just accept the madness and realize that you don't have to let your fears cripple you. Perhaps becoming what you fear and striking fear into others is your thing? I'm sure you can find a nice costume maker somewhere to help you with that. :)

Because he's the hero we deserve, but not the one that we need right now. So we'll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A Dark Octo.

Nananana Octoman.

You said it's sea-creatures with huge eyes, right? so if we took these pictures and shooped them tiny eyes would you still be scared?

It depends. Like in skyward sword the tentacle monster did not scare me at all.

if it really bothers you that much, it's probably better to see a psychologist.

I was just reading about Neuro-linguistic_programming last night! I think it's a sham, but maybe you should pay Paul McKenna €1,500 to go to one of his workshops to get over your fear of fictional characters. :)

I was saying that for one thing no amount of money will be able to magically fix this. Also this is a real fear and not a fictional character fear. The 3rd one was me being bored.

I'm probably not gonna help you much, but what about them scares you so much, just the eyes? I'm bot gonna trow examples at you so i don't freak you out.

If the problem is that serious you might want to go to an actual psychologist internet people can't help you more than give advice

Thats what I am looking for though. I dont need a cure I just want to discuss it. I don't know why it scares me. It is a random fear. The big octo in wind waker and the bloober in super mario sunshine. Both envoke pure terror in me. I dont know why and I really dont care. Most in game aquatic creatures do not bother me. Like for instance the electric eel in sotc. Or even the eels in super mario 64. None of those bother me only these. Or something very like it. I dont know why though.

I had thought about it. Looking into things about the brain. I tried to look at it symbolically. Water being emotion. The octo itself being judgment? The eyes being judgement? Im not sure.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Actually Im thinking its the eyes. The octo does not bother me as in sotc the sand serpent had huge eyes and I almost had a panic attack but I gripped my self together and felt better cause I killed him quickly.

Don't worry OP, as you can see here, most of the ocean has already been mapped - chances are, if there's anything truly horrible out there, you've already seen the worst of it.

Comment has been collapsed.

True. I am not worried of one popping up in my pool or at the beach. Im just afraid of em and dont know why but I already established that its not the monster but the eyes. The group of said monsters all have big eyes. The fact that they are giant snakes, octos, or hydras does not bother me. It is the eyes that do.

Hmm, this is rather weird.
Maybe it's because you had nightmares after playing the game, but you just don't remember. Your mind associates the big octopus with the nightmare, and makes your nervous system act up...?

Anyways, you should do as Yeliena's post said. Look at the image progressively, and try to convince yourself that it's not scary.

I did have nightmares of it but they were not really scary. I would be in a boat circling it.
But as I said it is the eyes. If it had no eyes it would prob not bother me. But thanks for your input.

IANA Psychologist, but I think fear of massive eyes could be a symptom of a deeper fear of being seen, and possibly judged and punished. So, do you see yourself as weak and/or contemptible? Do you think you did something that you should not have done?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No I typically do the right thing to do and have a very strong moral compass. I was bullied like hell as a child though. I used to think I was weak but now as an almost adult I have friends that I protect from jerks and I know that I can take em.

1 decade ago
Permalink

I would think carefully about that before being so certain. This fear seems irrational on the surface, but I think it's possible that it may be rooted within the subconscious. You may have latent guilt. Or perhaps deep down, you still see yourself as weak.

Maybe I don't know though. I should think about this.

Ok so I thought about this and I have come to the conclusion that do not feel as though I am weak. I don't think I have ever done anything really bad. But if I do something wrong I punish myself sometimes. Like if I accidentally hit a kid at the park when I throw a ball I just put myself in timeout. <When I was in 2nd grade btw. I don't really care now. I know my limits and my strengths of course I have my short comings but I think it may have to do with being bullied. I got very self conscious after all of that.

man I'm still scared of the "seahat" in Wind Waker, they we're located on some places on the map included one of the islands where you have to put a pear in a statue. Sometimes I like to play WW with my brother and I just give him the controller whenever I see or hear them. They seriously freak me out

I'm scared shitless of most ocean creatures. I used to play Disciples II a lot, when I was a kid. There was a huge octopus mob, and I had no problem with it. But then I just stopped playing, and the bloody thing started haunting me. That and jellyfish. Because of the tentacles, I guess. Water levels in games are a pain.
Creepy eyes are a whole another factor, though. Try looking up Turok, the one from 2009. All the dinosaurs had these yellow ugly eyes, which made it really uncomfortable for me to play.
