I've been needing to get a new PC, but never got around to doing it.
I was going for an Intel build, but am thinking of an AMD build.

If I were to for an AMD Build, I would choose the Ryzen 5 1600X CPU.
What motherboard would you guys recommend for it?

Anything with "B350" in its name. I prefer ASRock motherboards, as they are cheap enough but are among the best quality. Plus sometimes they offer extras no others do.

Hmmm I bought my first ASRock Mobo last year - It died on me after 2 months, then I had to wait 4 weeks for a replacement, then it died again another 2 months later. I've just replaced it with an MSI - working so much better. Cost only about $40 more.

I have Asrock with i5 4590 for 2 years and all works well. Looks like you had really bad luck.

Lots of AMD types swear by ASRock but tbh I've had small but niggling problems with most I've had. It's always something barely worth returning for like a flaky USB port but it still really grinds my gears, especially when building for others. Particular shame cause they're always easily the cheapest.

I am running on an old AM3 ASRock 870 Extreme 3 motherboard and it has yet to let me down. Unfortunately ASRock came out with a R2 version of this board, with UEFI instead of Legacy BIOS and with 8 core capability instead of 6, just a few months after I got it but it has been pushing my Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition Callisto CPU with all four cores unlocked via the BIOS for nearly six years now and shows no signs of giving up. I was very fortunate to have chosen this processor back in the day because unlocking the cores was still a new thing back then that got varied results and the Black Edition was one at the time that was known to be able to have its other two cores unlocked with no issues. After testing my system little to no difference could be found in performance between the cores so I have always wondered why they didn't just sell it as a 4 core in the first place since others I have seen or read about who used this chip had similar results.

Unfortunately the video card died (AMD HD 6850) so I got a RX480 and it didn't work and was told that it was because I was running Legacy BIOS and most newer video cards require UEFI. I'm still trying to find one that will work with it without having to break the bank. My processor was going to be a bottleneck with the RX480 anyway so it was probably for the best.

While I was awaiting my replacement board, I ran my RX480 on a legacy bios board (my old 2500K) - I just updated the BIOS and it ran fine.

I have the latest BIOS and others with my board are saying that it won't work and it didn't work on mine so I didn't pursue the matter.

So many posts and comments found via Google similar to this one - https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/forums/showthread.php?52753-Last-call-for-Legacy-BIOS-systems

Also my motherboard is not on this list (though the R2 release is) - http://www.pc-specs.com/gpu/ATI/R-400_Series/Radeon_RX_480_4GB/3489/Compatible_Motherboards

I don't know who or what to believe anymore on this subject as you can probably understand.

Though this shows as being out of stock I have found several new on eBay in the $140 range and Amazon does have one for $177.99 when clicking the Used and New link. When I added it to my wishlist about a month ago Amazon had over 30 in stock and it was only $139.99. Then one day about a week ago they all were suddenly gone and I was left with their other options if I wanted to purchase through Amazon.

MSI actually put a switch on this card for both BIOS and UEFI like AMD (at least Sapphire) did on the R9 series. They were the only company to do so from what I have found and this is the only 7XX series card that it was done on. Even other versions of MSI 750 Ti's don't have the switch for BIOS types. Anything newer and I would run into the same issues that I had when trying the RX480.

It's a way better card than my old HD6850 was and has twice the RAM and uses less power so for the games that I play it should be just fine. It's DirectX 12 instead of 11 too. Now if I only had the money for it.

i5-4670
GTX 970
Z87X-HD3 Mobo
16GB Ram
750W PSU I think

No budget at the moment.
Gaming only
1080P
Mostly new, could use a couple of old parts for now.
VR Ready

CPU is ok you can be also OC on FSB by 2-3%

For 1080P curent GPU is still fine Ultra on most games ;)

No need change anything until you do not want go VR or 2/4k.

You have problem with any game ?

Change your graphic card, the rest of your rig is perfect for gaming. You don't need more cores to play.

For VR, buy a GTX 1070 or 1080 (depending on your budget).

This is an important point for VR.

The 1080 and 1070 use a chip that has a special hardware optimization for VR.

What it allows is loading the texture and geometry 1 time and then rendering it from 2 separate views - 1 for each eye.

All other released cards as of 6-29-17 load everything twice and render it separately like it was 2 separate monitors.

What that means is these cards don't slow down much when doing VR while the performance of other cards is more than cut in half.

Better take 1600. 1600X is an overclocked processor from the factory, and 1600 can be overclocked and it's cheaper. And take the motherboard MSI B350 PC Mate or Tomahawk.
Personally, I have 1600 + PC Mate and I'm happy.

Whats the performance different between the 1600 and X?

Nothing, they are the same. X - overclocking from the factory, and without X - overclock itself.

The non X is clocked down slightly to hit the 65w TDP mark. But all Ryzen chips are overclockable so you can kick it up to 1600x speeds on any B350/X370 board if you were so inclined.

1600 sold with a cooler, and 1600X - without a cooler. Therefore, with 1600X it will be necessary to buy a cooler separately.

A320 for a basic build, B350 if you want to overclock and X370 if you want Xfire. There's very little between the vendors besides Biostar being shoddy with the BIOS updates. If you're into windows on your case literally the most important choice would be the colour.

FWIW I've built with both the ASRock A320M and a Gigabyte GA-AB350M so far and both have been flawless.

Why AMD?

My main gaming PC is an Intel based system right now (OC 4770k).

That said, it appears that Intel knew the last several Intel chipsets have fundamentally broken hyperthreading.

Google some sites you trust.

I'm not saying you should join a class action suit against Intel.

I'm just saying I'll understand if you join a class action suit against Intel.

asrock? never ever again. i've had three boards from these dicks and they all crapped out within one or two years.
yes, that's years ago now.
no, i'm not giving them another chance.
if you fuck up this big you just can't be trusted to do anything right.
same goes for lcpower. their psu were well known for blowing up in your face. maybe they have upped their quality since then but nobody in their right mind would buy stuff from them.

I've been building AMD gaming machines for years...if you're not trying to buy the fastest proc on the market, there's WAY more bang for your buck in the middle tiers of performance, perfect for 99% of game scenarios.

Mobo-wise, I stick with Asus and Gigabyte. Known quantities there, consistent quality (although no company is perfect). MSI isn't bad, either. Stay away from cheap mobos, they're NEVER worth it.

While you're at it, stay far, far away from cheap PSUs as well. Buy a good one, and buy a bit more than you need and you can run that PSU for 2-3 upgrades.
