I just discovered that if I post a link with a trailing ) the trailing ) is cut from the link and displayed as regular text but when I used the labeled link it works

According to the RFC they are and they are in fairly common use by some major sites like Wikipedia.

Many people do recommend against them because they break many parsers so it's one of those cases where you should accept them properly but not send them.
