The card game that's played like Uno but named after a famous Chinese dictator.

UNO's not so bad if you play with intercepts. (Got introduced to those in Singapore, they seem to have different rules than what I'm used to.)

monopoly? lol i could program an AI under 100 lines of code for it..
Monopoly is all about luck. boring

Comment has been collapsed.

Monopoly is very much a social game, depending highly on unwritten rules about using your position in the game to make and break alliances, help or screw other players, strike deals, and such.

Unfortunately, all of this really isn't written into the game rules, so if you expect the game itself to provide the backbone against which to strategize, you'll be sorely disappointed.

I personally can't remember ever actually having a game of Monopoly played to its conclusion. The game is far more about psychologically tormenting the other players until they just give up than it is about earning the most money (much like the real business world).

Dominion is my favorite card/board game of all time. With all expansions it's pure fun!

Other favorites: Agricola (!), Small World Underground, Race for the Galaxy, Bezzerwizzer, Mondo and the Doom Board Game.

And with a group of friends I enjoy party games like Tabu, Nobody is perfect, Therapy and Activity very much.

Advanced Squad Leader.

I usually tend to start people on Settlers of Catan and/or Carcassonne and work up from there. ;)

It's tough to play an actual boardgame with a 3-year-old in the house, the iOS version of Carcassonne is a Godsend! Ascension is great as well!

Depends on how 'hard core' you want to go

Axis and Allies
World at War

The D&D tabletop board games are actually pretty fun and are quick to play through like Return to Ravenloft.

Munchkin is a lot of fun too.

I'm pretty sure I would if I ever got a chance to play it and learn a little more than the basics, but I have no equipment and I don't know anyone who even plays. :/

Also, I can't believe only one person mentioned Chess. I mean, really? Really?
