I love the monster capture/training genre (cough cough Pokemon games), but it's quite difficult to find such games on PC and even more so on Steam, please mention/link more games with this type of setup (hell in general it just needs monster capturing or battling in order to qualify really).

Created a SteamGroup to be able to manage this a bit better there as well :) Monster Taming Games Group
The group also has a curator if you want to easily see the tagged games (we've tagged them based on the type of monster taming elements they have) : Monster Taming Games Curator

I would also like to implement a steam tag for this type of game on steam, if enough people tag the games with the tag and we get the devs involved (I have spoken to a few that are very keen on doing this) then we can maybe make this a reality and through doing this make finding games of this sub-genre extremely easy :).

The main idea I got from communicating with the devs is to call the tag "Monster Taming" as this will encompass all the games that have anything to do with capturing, nurturing, raising, evolving, and/or fighting with monsters, it's vague enough to encompass a lot of game thus making it more viable to be an actual tag. If anyone has a better idea please feel free to comment on my first comment in order to add it to a vote in the future, until then let's find some more games in this genre on Steam :).

So the main consensus was reached, let's all go ahead and tag the games with "Monster Taming" !!!

Would you want a steam tag for Pokemonlike games to be implemented on Steam?

View Results
Yes - Monster Taming
Maybe - Something other than Monster Taming
Meh - No tag :(

I haven't played the Sonic Adventure games but I heard they have Chao raising in?
How in-depth is it and do both of the games have it in? Do any other Sonic games that are on Steam have this?

To answer your questions, both games have Chao gardens, no other games on Steam have them (only games outside of the Adventure series that had them were the ones on GBA, and those never got ported), as to how in-depth the mechanic goes... it's Tamagotchi on steroids. Also, the characters themselves are still used in the franchise but the gardens are probably never coming back.
BTW, I think Nights Into Dreams also had some sort of early version of the Chao, back when Sonic Team started to mess with the concept.

Nights Into Dreams has that ???

I played a bit of Nights (have to finish it someday) and don't really remember how you interacted with the criters(their name scapes me), I just remember picking them up in the levels. As I said, if I'm not wrong is a very early implementation, sort of a prototype of what the Chao ended up being.

Hm, sounds more like they are just collectibles?

I know there is some sort of "raising" going on, it's even referenced in Sonic Adventure 1 on the Nights pinball table, and in S&ASR Transformed Nights is driven (Nights IS the car, SEGA are a weird bunch) by one of those angel looking things. I just think it was so superficial of a mechanic that I forgot it :P
I guess at this point I pretty much outed myself as a Sonic fanboy with all of this trivia XD

Haha nothing wrong with that :P
PS I looked it up a bit and it seems like its a virtual pet that you need to take care of?

Love the Chao Gardens, I especially loved finding them doodling on the ground after taking a Drawing Class, lol. I was always mad when I gave one the wrong animal and messed up their looks, though. Or when one of my favorites left a egg and "died"... :'(

Possession will do the job ?

I was following this new game for some times, in which you have to play as a ghost, very weak but with the unique power to take control of nearly everythings in sight ( Mostly critters, but also some furnitures that can be found in the various dungeons. )

Still trying to confirm if the incarnations can be leveled up in some way, or if a feature like this may be added... Now, at least, I can tell they can be "repaired", losing some definitives HP at costs.

Hm not sure if this qualifies as your really only taking over a creature until it dies or you leave it, from what I understand, so it doesn't qualify for the monster taming tag. In my opinion at least.

I know, by now it's more something like a "collector" featured game, as it include some Monster Encyclopedia ( Likewise... "The World is Your Weapon" have one, too ? ^^' ). And some achievements about "Keeping the same body or the same kind of critters until reaching the end".
I still don't know if they may include some level up feature, too... By now, I do agree it may not match a Monster Taming main goal as it is.

Well, I'm still playing it. ^^ Wait and see ?

Hmmmmmm, well in MHW you do "capture" small creatures to display them in your house, there's that as well haha, but I feel like applying the monster taming tag to the game would upset a lot of people because there are these cool monsters and you can't capture them to use them, only to harvest them differently haha. It's a kickass game though :P.

I'd say the Binding of Isaac definitely qualifies as an honorable mention as it is a mechanic, had no idea that was in the game though.

Ragnarok Online would also qualify as an honorable mention.

Pit People was actually mentioned to me before but I completely forgot about adding it to the list.

Monster Rancher just announced a Switch port, can only hope they'll bring it to PC eventually

Anyways for existing stuff you should check out dungeon crawlers, such as Paper Sorcerer. Any dungeon crawler based on Wizardry IV or Shin Megami Tensei is likely to have a 'mon aspect. Depending on the title it might not be what you consider taming though, a lot are just summoning.

A new monster rancher game !?! I must see this !
Going to google that right now !

PS it seems like the tag would apply to Paper Sorcerer as you do get monsters on your team that you can fight with so excellent :)

PPS a Shin Megami Tensei game on Steam would be amazing :P

Does Citizens of Earth count? Instead of monsters, you collect people to fight for you.

The fact that your collecting people makes it more just a normal RPG or JRPG style at that point and not really monster taming.

Nexomon released today, quite a nice price but currently still in early access as I assume they will first update to full release status once they have fixed the bugs, the whole game and all of its mechanics are already present from my understanding.

what about Monster Hunter World? Granted you don't Own the captured monster, but it is possible to capture all of em

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The whole point is to capture and use them, in MHW you just capture them to get additional materials.

So it doesn't fall into the Monster Taming category as you aren't using the monsters at all.

THE closest MHW has to "using" the monsters is to display the critters you have caught in your room, but even then it's just for display purposes.

Very recently I played Far Cry Primal on Steam, it has animal taming: the tamed animal follow you, fight with you, you can order it to attack enemies.. each type of animal has a bonus for example a wolf howls when there are dangerous animals/enemies around you.. lions put a 3d mark (the mark above the heads) on human enemies in a small (but decent) radius around you..etc also you can ride some of those tamed animals like the bears or saber-tooth tigers
You also has an owl that works like a scouting drone.

AC Origins & Odyssey also have the ability to tame animals they follow you and fight with you
in both those AC games you also have an eagle as a drone and the horse to ride (ofc you can ride camels too in Origins)
but those games the tamed animals don't have the bonus thing like FC Primal

also all those games you can only have 1 active tamed beast at a time

You could find some screenshots for those AC games riding a horse and activating the "auto drive" switch to the eagle above and see the tamed animal running behind you.

Hmmmmmm ... I'm not 100% sure if this qualifies because the taming is once-off per beast and then you just summon it ... if we include this then we can just as well include all the Final Fantasy games where you beat a monster/mirage and then afterward it gets added as a summon ability. But that doesn't really qualify as a Monster Taming game, in my opinion, feel free to give your feedback, this is a discussion so if you feel like my point of view is wrong then I'm more than willing to hear you out more :).

I was thinking about FarCry 5 now as well, where you get the dog, cougar, and bear, you need to do a small mission to get them and then you just set them as a companion and they come to fight with you, the only difference between that and FarCry Primals system is that in Primal you first need to track the animal, weaken it and convert it to your side, but you can just have one of each... so I don't know, Primal sort off more leans towards Monster Taming than what FarCry 5 does...

I don't really have much of a strong opinion on the matter, I haven't played any of the games in the OP (not a single FF game yet)
But for FC Primal the tamed beast if got hurt in battle it can eat the body of a fallen enemy/animal or you can heal it with meat .. if its health depleted you have a limited time to revive it with meat (no reviving in Survivor Mode) if you don't revive it its gone and you will have to track and tame another one of its kind

FC5 a steam friend just gifted it to me on Steam yesterday so don't know yet what the taming in it is like

Added Necro Story to the list

At this point in time, we don't know too much about this game but its description states that you can capture enemies' souls and add them to your team ... so it sounds like it qualifies ...?
