I heard that you can have multiple games open and still get your trading card drops for all the games, so umm, I sorta just.... did this....

UPDATE: After about 20 minutes of idling I have already gotten four drops from a random handful of the games I'm idling. I don't know if there's a drop ratereduction, but if there is, it can't be too bad.

UPDATE 2: It's been another 30 minutes and I haven't gotten a single additional drop after the first four. I think I hit a glass ceiling...

The only thing that could happen is getting his account locked or suspended, VAC ban is for games, not steam.

VAC stands for Valve Anti Cheat, which is used in games that use the steam central servers for backups/hosting their stuff. There are more and more games adding to the VAC list lately, it's not entirely perfect but it keeps most of the hackers at bay, only pro one's manage to break through without getting caught by the system.

What you're talking about is how VAC scans memory for running processes and DLL hooks while you're running a game to check for processes which try and hook something the game uses, and modify it, or known cheats and their checksums / signatures. That has nothing to do with using SAM, nor does SAM count as "cheating software", so it's not on VAC's list of checksums for known cheats, not does it modify game processes in a way that could be considered cheating by any stretch of the imagination. Some people have gotten temp. account blocks for farming achieves during the 2011 winter sale for coal using it. Nothing else.

you only get cards by playing/idling in games, not by achievements lol, and you don't actually have the games open, you just have tabs for the achievements for each of the games which you can unlock.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you open the game's window in SAM, Steam thinks you're in game.

1 decade ago

Why you got that thing? You can give yourself achievements with that?

1 decade ago

Yep, but it also works for making Steam think you're idling in a game without actually having to be running that game.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Why do that though? I mean what's the point

1 decade ago

I only use it for idling; someone told me that they discovered it worked for idling for trading cards so I downloaded it just for that. I don't use it to scam myself achievements.

Even so, I don't think this is something you should be openly admitting to doing on a public forum, and/or spreading the information on how to do it (whether intentionally or not).

Don't know if that achievement system is new or old but first time I hear about it and I wondering, does steam knows about this? Is it dangerous to use (getting banned) and I would like a source if you can give me one about this thing.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The guy who makes it includes a warranty that he is not responsible for any trouble you get yourself in with it, but I don't know of anyone getting in trouble for using it (though I haven't looked very hard). Just google "steam achievement manager" to find it.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Obviously, it's only our fault if we use it, he doesn't make us use it. It's normal. But the thing is I would love to use it but I am not sure if I can be banned using it or by breaking one of the policies of Steam beacuse I really don't like getting VAC banned if you know what I mean but ehh, looks dangerous maybe I shall give it some more time to "cook" and see what Steam says about it or just ask support if it's really needed.

Comment has been collapsed.

Valve is usually pretty generous to its customers if there's any chance that they were innocent in the matter (i.e. no one who redeemed a stolen DiRT 3 key got punished for it besides having the game removed from their account), so I'm just taking a risk and hoping for the best.

Plus, if they had a way to detect SAM right now, I'm sure they'd be using it. As a programmer, I think that, unless SAM is coded in some remarkably bad way that makes it obvious that it's not the real Steam client, there most likely isn't any way to detect use of SAM. They could try using heuristics to predict who might be using SAM, but I'm guessing that that would give false positives for a lot of genuine game idlers, so they probably wouldn't do that.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Mm, but, if lets say I would like to give myself a few achievements, how can valve stop me from doing so IF the SAM wasn't allowed, I mean, they can't re-take the achievements that what worries me.

I left four games open at the same time last night, and in the morning had 2 cards from each of them - card drops seem slower from that than from running one game at a time...

1 decade ago

Nope. I run 2-3 games from time to time, and they all drop cards. Castle Crashers and Organ Trail just dropped a card for me at almost the exact same time.

I was idling Organ Trail and Terraria today while at work and got my cards just fine. The first game you start is the one that will show you as playing in your profile, but both will drop cards.

Also I didn't really think the drop rate was any slower than when I ran just one game at a time. I didn't time it or anything, but to me it feels faster to idle one and play another, likely because I'm not itching to go and play a game I want to play now rather than one that just got trading cards.

No, using SAM and getting achievements will not earn you cards. You need to idle or play the games that include trading cards for it to work.

SAM makes steam think you're running the game.

1 decade ago

Ah, never knew that. Still, running multiple games will drop the chance of getting the cards.

1 decade ago

Interesting, I just run them simultaneously. Some don't handle being alt-tabbed very well, but most have been fine idling in the background. Guess your method is simpler, however... :)

1 decade ago

I just keep like 7 games open and play one.

1 decade ago

Anecdotal evidence suggests idling multiple games at the same time slows the card drop rate significantly.

1 decade ago

This is true, i had 3 games running at once (trine 2, CS:GO, tf2) got my first 3 cards in each game, then only 1 of the games got cards relatively fast/normal pace (trine 2), i believe idling makes it even worst as one of the games didn't drop my last card without playing at least 3 freaking hours of that game (CS:GO).

The requirements for getting a booster pack for a game are:

2 - You must have logged in to steam at least once during that week

You can get them at any time.

1 decade ago

Yup! SAM can pretend to be playing any game that you own (or any F2P game), whether it's downloaded or not.

One thing worth noting: if the game doesn't have any achievements or statistics, it won't automatically show up on the list, so you'll have to type in the game ID in SAM's search box and hit "Add Game". I had to use that for FTL and Kerbal Space Program.

I kno in the beginning when I idl'd TF2 I played another game at the same time and I got cards from both. However it was definitely alot slowed then when I just ran one game.

In regards to other people stating if Valve cares about 'cheating' to get cards? They dont care. THink of all the "Tax" they are making from selling the cards. Im willing to bet (alot) they are making just as much money if not more from the Tax then the games themselves. Value/Gabe are geniuses!!
