to receive their game, is it ok for me after that time has passed that the giveaway is now null and void for said winner(s) ?

because i unfortunately have steam money on my account, and am using it to buy 5 copies of a game on sale. the sale ends in ~24 hours as of this posting.

no way will i try to buy the games full price at $10 if the winner cannot be contacted during this sale time period. (plus i dont have that much steam cash)

I imagine its better off if i had made 5 separate one game giveaways, but thats too time consuming and i'm about to head out for ~2 hours

hmmm. well lugums suggestion for making one game giveaways, i've done that before with winners permission to delete it if the key wasnt available for them. i guess ill do that when i come home later

it may be a good idea to reduce the 7 days to something like 5 days or something, but not everybody is online in sg every few days, but then we r having more problems like this. That steam gift inventory thing really fuckd us up hard

If it was 1 copy it was possible to have it deleted, with permission from the winner. However 5 copies will be impossilbel.
Why alot don't gift gifts anymore.

Why did you make them before asking?

because the sale ends in 24 hours, and i'm about to leave home for another ~2-3 hours. so i figured i'd have the giveaway end asap and then if the winners actually read the description we could contact each other, steam friend , give/receive their gift. asap when i got home later

As your giveaway is not over yet, I'd strongly suggest you delete it (but you will lose 5 giveaway slots, I don't know how many you have).
Winners have one week to get their games

Yeah, I was going to suggest this to. Made no sense to me that he just changed GA description that he was going to delete it instead of just deleting it :)

In the future, never rely on Steam sales, you will never get a guarantee that the winner will be available before within the one-week wait period. Buy keys instead. Plenty of stores to choose form, and most of them are cheaper than Steam anyway.
(Although part of me wonders how an American cannot afford 10 USD, but whatever.)

10USD*5=50USD. If OP is a minor and does not have any income of his own, he's totally relying on parents and only getting wallet money from selling steam items it's very plausible he cannot afford 50$ or even 10$ out of thin air. When I was minor I was getting like 20PLN aka 5USD allowance per month from my mom, anything extra I had to work for.

Also I would disagree with you that never relying on Steam sales. Sales that are over 7 days 1hour long from time you are posting your GA (this is minimum considering 1h GAs are minimum, longer GAs will need longer sale ofc) are totally fine. It can include a lot of preorders (which often have sale till release day) but also with biggest Steam Sales (like Summer and Winter) which lasts 11 days. If your GA is ending when there is still more than 7 days of Sale you are basically safe. Winner must accept your contact within 7 days, so you will still have time to buy and send the gift. If he does not and sale ends because of that this is a valid reason for GA deletion as confirmed by Khalaq here

Winner unavailable, can only reroll after one week. Sale period over. Had a giveaway that needed almost a month to find a winner because of that. And you cannot do anything about it.

Permalink

As I linked above - if winner was unavaiable after this one week you can request GA deletion instead of reroll. So all you risk is a single GA slot, which for you or me should not really be a problem ;p

also you only can use steam wallet for steam

If you have games you want, steamtrades is an option making sure they're in the same region as you for gifting purposes, you might even find buyers for some paypal $$ as conversion.

Well. You cant really rely on someone reading the GA description and contacting you within time you want..
For example, I won a game yesterday. I try to give feedback within minutes. (because I dont see why redeeming a key should take more then several seconds) . But going to work, going out with friends an stuff like that, I didnt even noticed it was already 20 hours passed since I won. With sutff going on, things like this just happens..
So no matter, you cant relly trust that everything will go smoothly.

I think I have had several winners for my GA that took 3 - 4 days just to redeem the key, although they are online all the time. (makes no sense, never understood how can you procrastinae so much that you cant even copy/paste key. Because you obviously had the time to log on to steam). But they do it. Eventually. So not really against the rules..

I login to Steam and goes online during work, to participate in Steam chat or group chat.
Or to idle games for cards.

But, because I am at work, I will not login to SG to check for winnings or even redeem Steam games (which requires me to open my Steam library, which will raise some questions when showing a big Steam library window on screen during work).

Make sense?

If you havent logged on SG, well.. obviously..
My steam goes online from phone and my laptop too.

Buy a copy for someone you trust (a friend) and have them add the game to their inventory, then they can gift it back to you and you can give it to the slow winner.
Edit: Just tried it, and it does not work. Abort mission.

I don't know it works that way, anymore. Valve made it pretty difficult to do anything other than a direct transfer. P

as Khalaq said - storing gifts in your inventory is no longer possible - only direct gifting - as Valve changed the rules some months ago

yes, but were they new gifts (as the OP is talking about purchasing) or ones you already owned - it could also be different for guest passes as there a thousands of those around - but try purchasing something to save in your inventory - it is no longer allowed :( stuff already in our inventory have the old rules

I never said I purchased something and saved it in my inventory. That is no longer available, I think I've tried it after the change.
But yea, they were old stuff, so maybe there is a difference in how they work like you say.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

well it is not me who says it - it is Valve :) - they changed the rules, I am just highlighting the fact that direct gifting is, irritatingly, now the only way - as storing in your inventory of purchased gifts is no longer an option - as both Kalaq and I said above :)

hang on, so you purchased something and saved it in someone elses inventory (not their library); have the changes made by Valve been rescinded then? If so, I am really confused now !!!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I can see you being confused. So here's a "breakdown" of what I did:

  1. I had guest passes (most probably from before the inventory/gifting changes), they cluttered up my inventory, wanted them gone.
  2. I noticed I could send the passes both by email and directly to my other steam accounts.
  3. Those steam accounts could then choose to activate the guest pass or save the guest pass in inventory (no matter if they owned the game the pass was for or not).

As you can see, I never purchased something, I had the passes from start and just shipped them away.
While I know you can't purchase something and save it in the purchase account's inventory any longer, I figured you could maybe purchase something as a gift and the gifted account could choose to save the gift in their inventory.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

ah - that is where I am getting confused - no, you figured wrong - when you purchase now you have to buy it for yourself or gift it directly to the persons library - very annoying - no more saving to inventory as Kalaq indicated above :) - thanks for the clarification that you were on about stuff you already owned - really made me think they had changed back for a moment :)

Comment has been collapsed.

I just bought a game from one of my accounts and sent it to my main account, and yes, like you've said, there was no "save to inventory"-button, I could only accept (and save it in my library) or decline the gift. Sigh, Steam...

yeah - I have stopped purchasing anything from steam to gift since this change - as it is soooo annoying - cannot believe that this has not lost them some money - as I purchased in sales to gift, not resell :O{

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I still buy stuff on Steam for myself during sales, but I can't buy copies to give away any longer, which sucks since I was kinda thinking of changing to 100% Steam inventory gifting here on SG (that way, I figured, I would have no problem with dupe keys).

I think I would gift the game to an alternate account, and instead of adding it to the alt's library, keep it in the gift inventory, and then trade/send the gift copy to the winner once it's available to do so and the winner can easily accept the game; hopefully they will understand. I think that's the best scenario.
