You don't actually save money by buying tier 0 (not buying) because...humble bundle actually accepts a value of $0.00 for tier 1.

Thanks. That's too bad. The warning messages is misleading then. It only told me paying less than $1 meant I would get no steam keys (no steam key of what? the only steam key is in the $6 tier) rather than something like "Warning: You will not receive xxxx Please enter at least one penny (preferably a lot more to help cover our costs!)"

I was looking forward to some free trees and instead I get some burning wood...

Well, last one was a bundle of unfinished games. Now it is a random asset pack for one of the most complicated, difficult-to-learn, resource-demanding professional game engines available. I'm sure tons and tons of HB users will find it absolutely essential to have in their libraries for later use.

most complicated, difficult-to-learn

how do you know that?

CryEngine is infamous for that since release. (Well, it was infamous for requiring a nuclear power plant to run when it first came out, since then at least the games themselves need a lot less resources.) One of the reasons game devs never really picked it up. Not the only one though. People weren't really keen on using any idTech engine since 4, and CroTeam never really managed to sell their Serious Engine either (although I never really found out if they even tried to).

Still, just look for forums on "Unreal engine vs. cryengine" topics, people who used them tend to say the same: UE is more for anyone who is starting, CryEngine is advised for people with experience. And patience.

why that? ^^

Carmack really wanted to do something revolutionary, but the end product also meant something that was nothing like the previous engines or the ones on the market. And Epic already had a huge push with Unreal Engine. id Tech 3 was somewhat popular and competed with UE1, but id Tech 4 had like 5 games I think in total? And 2 were made by Raven, who were more or less the backup studio for id for a long time then, the only team who had some experience in handling Carmack's work.
And apparently from id Tech 5 and on they didn't even really try to sell it. Then again, they were bought by Bethesda who are infamous of trying to make money form everything, even if it is normally free, so maybe they'll try to force id Tech 6 (the engine of the upcoming Doom re-remake) on some studios working with them.

An asset pack for CryEngine, recently made free since nobody in their right mind wanted to licence it, it is so notoriously complicated to use compared to stuff like Unity or even UE. (But it can look spectacular at least.)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What is CryTek's cut from games? With the usual licenses?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't know, sadly. Probably the usual: engine is free, they make money from selling assets (can't find an official asset store though o.O).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I thought the modern model is that they take certain cut from revenue?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Depends on license. Since they will reveal the model right now, I cannot tell how will they make money. Before that, CryEngine had a monthly subscription model.

So essentially their model is to sell support for their engine and take cut from resources sold in their store...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sounds usual. Selling support is a fairly standard model nowadays. After all, RedHat and SUSE are making quite a nice living from it on their commercial server grade OSs. :D

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, competition between with Unity and Unreal is tough. So why not give your poorly documented hard to use engine for free and then get money from consulting. While allowing people to pay to sell assets from which you take a cut ;D

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Weeeeeell… whenever I see a discussion on CryEngine, the only thing most people tell as a huge positive is that it is excellently documented, just difficult to use.

You seem super knowledgeable. Do you know if the 3D models in this humble bundle are engine agnostic? (like they work in Unreal and Unity?) I think they were

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If not I'd guess it wouldn't be too hard to covert them to a compatible format.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They give you several formats for most widely available engines. Luckily someone already checked and listed them in detail: http://www.gamefromscratch.com/post/2016/03/15/Inside-The-CryEngine-Humble-Bundle.aspx

I was about to say what happened to the bundle every Tuesday proclamation since the weekly bundle is now gone. Not into this sort of thing though so it's an easy pass for me. I won't complain though, there have been some good bundles from Humble lately.

That's debatable, especially after they shut down the Crysis 1 & 2 multiplayer servers.

I doubt you could make a crappier cryengine game than current unity ones.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Maybe not, but that doesn't mean that we want more crappy games. I don't even care what level of crap they are, as soon as it hits below the "decent" level it's crap.

It's innevitable, because there is 0 quality control on Steam. Plus, you can make money from trading cards by giving away the games later in tens of thousands.
