I found out this morning my gaming pc suddenly had Windows 10 installed.
I got like a zillion notifications last months that I could get a free " upgrade" but tbh I wasnt interested. Seems like I did choose to install yesterday (was a bit rushed so that might have happened).

I was pretty pissed at myself.

Do you people have experience with Windows 10? Should I invest time getting my shit to work on Windows 10 or should I just reinstall Windows 7 (the OS I'm liking the most atm)? My laptop and working computer have Windows 8.1 btw, so I'm not a noob at Windows versions after 7.

If I can get my programs and games to work flawless with Windows 10 its easier keeping it this way.

What I do with my gaming pc (and it was working flawlessly in Windows 7)

  • Gaming (Steam and a little of Origin and uPlay)
  • Video editing (Pinnacle)
  • Sharing files using Homegroup (Laptop + media player (for watching movies and tvshows which are stored on my gaming pc))

Specs if needed:
Processor: Intel Intel Core i5 4670K 3,4GHz
Graphics: GTX970
Motherboard: MSI Z87-GD65 GAMING
Memory: 16 gb of ram

Sadly no giveaway atm

Last update:
Got it all working 100% as it seems. I'm happy with the switch for now. I was so happy I updated my laptop to win10 as well (was 8.1, which sucks a lot imo). No performance issues on both machines.

If you're fine with giving up your personal rights - go ahead, there is a reason they are giving away win10 for free

( the most interesting things can't be deactivated - you cannot even trick windows 10 to silent its communication back to microsoft by adding a rule to hosts its ip adress is hardcoded even and bypasses dns )

Win10 requests that its automatically updated without any veto of you possible. You just might delay it for some while. They can add or remove features at will. People running the mediacenter editions of Windows can tell a bit. (they removed lots of decoding features in the new version - i think it can't play even a DVD now - you need to install software for anything now). It also requests that it can scan your files at will and track what you're doing. You can't disable that behavior even (if you stumble over "win10 tricks" to disable stuff - yes it does help but thats only a part of that)

Just read their licensing stuff.

you can block anything using your firewall rules or antivirus also a great program for anyone who wants to turn off Microsofts spying in win 10 Shut up 10 this will allow you to turn off things not shown in windows 10 options as well as ones shown.

i switched to Win10 shortly after release, and had nearly no problems so far (except for a little problem with RDP). i didn't play a single game that didn't work (that includes games on Steam, Origin and Uplay). all my programs work flawlessly. i really can't complain.

if you want to go back to Win7, i believe you can do that pretty easily by uninstalling the Win10 update in the Windows Update dialog.

i believe you have one month to go back to Win7. so i guess it makes sense if you test it out, and if you experience problems you just go back to Win7.

Can confirm this, i recently upgraded too. You will have a "Windows.old" folder on your system drive containing your previous W7 installation. It will be deleted after a month automatically tho.

I use win10 my games work just fine, there's some incompatibilit with applocale but i found another program for that.
I think my games play even better after i switched but i dunno really, maybe it's because i dont use any gadget anymore, and i disabled most of the win10 things like cortana and other feeds things.

Edit: we have a simmilar pc so i guess it will be fine.

With your specs, you should stick to Windows 10. Why bother formatting and reinstalling an outdated OS? That doesn't make any sense.

Windows 10 might have a lot of useless features such as Cortana, but my system runs WAY better ever since I decided to upgrade. Also, older games work way better now. You will also notice a gain in performance, especially if you are using an SSD. My Win 10 boots up in 3 seconds after I've pushed the power button on my PC.

Also, Windows 10 keeps all your shit updated. No more hassle to manually download drivers (Except for GPU drivers of course).

The only negative aspect one might see is the data collecting. But there are tutorials out there how to deactivate that.

So if you ask me, your rushed decision was a good one.

well since MS was sooo nice to upgrade your system without asking, i suppose you could try to get used to it now xD

btw, i switched to win10 the same day it was released (my luck, the hdd broke down 2 days before the release, what a coincidence -.- ). haven't had many issues except some stupid stuff like autoupdates which you can't cancel (it just asks to postpone the restart, then it forces it).

I think they asked and I hit enter before I left the pc. I'm sure its all my fault here. But those notifications were annoying, looked like they were pushing you to use 10. (I know there was a way to disable the notification)

I would download an installer and do your own clean install of it, no doubt. You will have problems if you leave the one you have on.

I think 10 is better than 8, with 8 being better than 7. Both 10 and 8 require fixing the start menu (I use Start8/10) and disabling some things. Once you get going, you will be golden. I haven't had any problems on 10. I used 7 until 8 came out, then 8 until 10 came out.

Windows Manager is a clean way to tweak and disable as you please, with a free trial that should cover you for everything you want to do. It is fully functional for like 15 days.

I haven't seen any problems with games. The only thing you might not like is that the OS has more control than in the past, making decisions for you, so you might be tweaking it quite a bit to get it to where you like it. Still, worth it.

I searched a little for an installer.
So basically its getting an iso, burning it on a dvd and start a clean instal from there?
Do you know where to get the installer?

And what kind of problems will I get if I keep it this way?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This is the Installer.

You use the media creation tool, it downloads it for you, then you create an installation disc or use a thumb drive.

You should never use an OS that wasn't clean installed. You will have random problems. Bugs, slowdowns, etc. Nothing specific, just problems from installing on top of something. It will never be as fast as it could have been.

Yes, you will lose your data that isn't backed up and some game saves (Like the registry ones). You can use this to cover the rest. You will gain a cleaner setup and a fresh start, though. It will never work quite right if you keep the install you have.

Windows 10 also doesn't use keys, your hardware was saved by MS as having Windows 10, so you can just straight up clean install. It takes a lot less time the second time, when you do it clean, too.

hmm a few things most wont mention is that windows 10 is largely built on data harvesting, its been said many times even in various news outlets.
as you can disable some of these harvesting features, but they auto re enable with any update.
free doesn't always mean you should get it, always weight the pros and cons.

if you enjoy older games compatibility is wiped out kinda, plus many drms wont work with win10, out of the older ones.

my suggestion is do your research as what you find might be alot more then what you are told.
as i could weight many reasons you should switch back via various storys ive heard from friends who use to have it, and news outlets but its much easier for you to find the facts yourself.

which i dont really know many of the pros of windows10 as most ive heard is the downsides, but goodluck on finding the facts from fiction ^w^

oh right and a suggestion, if you do revert to an older version, you can goto windows update and hide the windows10 update.
but then again over time they push out the update into your update list again, which you can always rehide it ^w^
should keep from accidently installing it.

sorry, but it seems you overexaggerate nearly every point you mention. and some are just plain wrong.

hmm a few things most wont mention is that windows 10 is largely built on data harvesting, its been said many times even in various news outlets.

you make it sound like this is the number one functionality of Windows 10. of course that's not true. like with so many other OSs, programs and devices, Win10 tries to get as much data as possible. but you can switch off nearly all of that.

as you can disable some of these harvesting features, but they auto re enable with any update.

you can disable everything except for telemetry data (and you can reduce that to a minimum. and nothing you switch off in the windows config auto-enables itself. my settings are the same as last year in July. they don't auto-enable anything, except for hacks to disable telemetry transmission.

if you enjoy older games compatibility is wiped out kinda, plus many drms wont work with win10, out of the older ones.

as far as i know, only SafeDisc and SecuROM don't work anymore. the rest is pretty much fine. when those copy-protections were used, everybody complained about how aggressive they are, and how deep they install themselves into the system. nobody wanted them. now they are finally dropped completely, and it's funny how suddenly everyone complains about the lack of the copy-protection noone wanted in the first place. if you want to play old games with those copy-protections, there are ways to do that (e.g. VMs). with every new Windows version, some old technology gets dropped. and in the long run, that's a good thing.

you can goto windows update and hide the windows10 update.
but then again over time they push out the update into your update list again, which you can always rehide it ^w^
should keep from accidently installing it.

this is true, as far as i know. and i can imagine it's super-annoying. ^^

free doesn't always mean you should get it, always weight the pros and cons.

the main reason to switch to Win10 should not be that it's free, but that it's the future of Windows. let's be honest, in a few years everybody who complains now will use it anyway (unless suddenly Linux gets viable). everybody complained about XP and 7, and in the end they all installed it anyway. this will happen with 10, so why not install it now? it works pretty well, actually.

hmm well one has to remember that most things are never given free without reason, the data harvesting is one of the largest downsides is what i meant to say, its 5am here so im kinda not awake.

from what ive learned that many of the settings reactivate when you update, this was via various news outlets.

i merely said that the old drms are blocked as many older games use them, which means if you play older games you may not be able to play many you use too.
which as with

not trying to overexaggerate anything, just trying to share what info i can based on what ive learned via friends and various news outlets.

but i will agree i could have written it much better, but this is what happens when you have yet to eat and barely awake.

which is also why i suggested they seek out there own info, as much of what we say may not be worded correctly or be specificly dead on. as to were the news outlets have already listed the various things, that and they will have more solid info and proof alongside the facts.

o.o im one of the ones who dont jump on the band wagon just because something is the ''cool'' or the ''popular''
as windows 10 is still being worked on, so why not stick with something that is more solid, something you know works well already.
and something you already know about and trust.
as with windows10 its still fresh still new, which you never should jump into something which is new instantly or too quickly.
people who bought last gen consoles learned this, as there was console breaking defects ive heard.

as to upgrading, id say hold out till you cant any longer usually, as personally i distrust microsoft and there new os.
that and i like to play older generations of games which i missed out on, as mainly was a console gamer growing up as didnt always have money or an updated pc that could run decent games.

i should also note the talk of xboxone requireing you to go online every 24hours, dunno if it ever happened or not, then there was also the sensor thing.
from what ive been told, rumor wise is they were collecting data, on how many were in the household among other things.
keyword being rumor, but i like to keep an open mind and remember in reality many things can happen.
which even if the rumor isnt true one must wonder why they were trying to force that on people, as there is always a reason for every action.

so the simple is, one should always research before jumping into anything, the poster is researching via our words, but they should also search around the net for facts, as what we share are sometimes soley opinions v.s facts.

oh and given time windows 10 may become more favorable, but at the momment we really dont know what microsoft has loaded it with, or what there plans are with this new os, as i question it partly because they did a mass free upgrade, which makes me wonder the reason for it.
which it also is still being updated, and most os arent good at the beginning of there lifes.

i should also add that everyone should research things before jumping in, as we never really know fully what were jumping into.
reminds of southpark episode the humanipod 0.0

oh and pleasure to meet you killing arts ^w^ -still tired-

not trying to overexaggerate anything, just trying to share what info i can based on what ive learned via friends and various news outlets.

sure, i believe you. i just think most of what you said is incorrect or exaggerated (maybe not by you, but by the sources you got the information from). so it needs to be corrected. criticism can only be taken seriously if it is based on facts. and there is of course enough to criticise in Windows 10. i just think we should be as accurate as possible with our criticism. let's take the data collection stuff as an example. we can't switch off telemetry completely (except for Enterprise and Server editions). that's a valid point. and i can understand if people don't like that. but we should definitely stick to the facts. and the facts say that we can deactivate almost all of the data collection, except for the lowest possible telemetry setting, which i believe is only some anonymous user data (that may even benefit us, because it provides MS with data that helps to improve Windows).

i merely said that the old drms are blocked as many older games use them, which means if you play older games you may not be able to play many you use too.

i just wanted to correct it a bit. there are some old copy-protections that will not work anymore. many old games will work without problems. (and really old games from the DOS era will work with DOSBox, as usual.) would be interesting to see a more or less complete list of games that don't work anymore since Win10. i am sure there is a website for that. ^^

which is also why i suggested they seek out there own info, as much of what we say may not be worded correctly or be specificly dead on.

sure, since we both didn't list any sources, everything we say should be further validated, before making the choice for or against Win10.

o.o im one of the ones who dont jump on the band wagon just because something is the ''cool'' or the ''popular''
as windows 10 is still being worked on, so why not stick with something that is more solid, something you know works well already.
and something you already know about and trust.

i can think of several reasons against that.

  • basic support for Windows 7 has expired for more than a year now. you will get security fixes, but no feature updates anymore.
  • windows 10 is not exactly new. it had a preview phase for more than a year, i think. people used it intensively and it already got a ton of fixes and updates before release. and since release almost another year has passed. so you can expect it to run very stable (and i can confirm that, based on my personal experience).
  • can't argue against the trust issue, though. ^^

i should also note the talk of xboxone requireing you to go online every 24hours, dunno if it ever happened or not, then there was also the sensor thing.
from what ive been told, rumor wise is they were collecting data, on how many were in the household among other things.
keyword being rumor, but i like to keep an open mind and remember in reality many things can happen.
which even if the rumor isnt true one must wonder why they were trying to force that on people, as there is always a reason for every action.

no, there is no 24h connection requirement. MS listened to the complaints and changed that completely. and there is no proof at all, that your XBox spies on you and uses the camera to count the number of people in your household. i think those were all not more than rumors, based on the outrage about the 24h requirement and kinect. rumors without even a single piece of evidence. i guess news sites spoke about that theoretical scenario as clickbait, that's all. the problem with those rumors is, even if they turned out to be wrong years ago, people still post on the internet what they heard or read somewhere from someone, and that's how those rumors live on and on. ^^

oh and pleasure to meet you killing arts ^w^

please to meet you, too. ^^

Well.. Apparently some people are experiencing auto-upgrade to Windows 10... Personally the only problem I had with Windows 10 would be the auto-download and install of Windows update since my internet speed is crap and I'm not the only one using my internet connection so I don't want to hog all the bandwidth... It can be fixed but it requires so much research on the net and a hassle for those people who aren't tech savvy...

If you want to go back to Windows 7 you can follow this instruction http://www.howtogeek.com/220723/how-to-uninstall-windows-10-and-downgrade-to-windows-7-or-8.1/

IMO give Windows 10 a chance... It's a lot better than Windows 7 but requires getting used to...

Most the issues I've found when using different types of laptops.
On my home PC, everything works fine, after a month of fine-tuning everything.
The issues on laptops mostly stem from Wi-Fi drivers. No matter how many different configurations I try they always seem to cause problems every now and then, switching off during especially during downloads.
Other than that, think you're safe gaming-wise.

Those who don't clean the OS after upgrading would likely encounter random strange issues or slowdowns due to previous trash from old OS.

I simply used the refresh function and my Windows 10 is ok now.

You shouldn't really every have to refresh. All it does is reset Windows, keeping your data, but making sure all the OS files are set to default state. It still leaves behind all the extra junk. I know you are trying to get out of having to do a clean install, but like graphics card drivers, clean installs only. You only have to do it once and you are good to go. You can dodge it all you want, but it will never be quite right. All that time since your last reformat, everything you have done, almost every problem, would still be there with a refresh or by keeping it the way it is.

Look around the internet. Upgrade vs clean install isn't even an argument and if you ever somehow had to refresh (I never have), it would still be best done on an operating system that was cleanly installed, in the first place, due to the fact that the extra problems may have nothing to do with the actual OS files.

I love 10 so far. There's an issue for me where if I am working with too many windows that the overlapping of the windows don't work anymore, but that's solved by a quick restart. I heard too much bad things about compatibility especially with older games to even consider Win10.
So, if you like to play some old stuff I wouldn't be too sure about switching from Win7...
Also, my brother had real trouble with the drivers for an older Laser printer model.

I probably get a Win10 machine next year anyway, so I'd have both options.

And it's really horrible and I'd say criminal how they force Win10 down our throats. If only Linux was easy and perfectly compatible with all Steam-games...
