GDI or Brotherhood of Nod?
There is no way of knowing which mission is harder unless you look it up. On Remaster at least you can go back to play the other mission which you didn't choose initially, without having to make about a dozen of saves beforehand for all possible variants. In case of GDI mission 8 - if I remember correctly - 8a (in Austria) might end up being much harder without using its, as far as I can tell, intended way of passing it, but 8b (Slovakia) has an annoying gimmick to deal with which can almost immediately result in a mission failure if you don't take precautions from get-go.
As for campaign differences, I think that's intentional that Nod campaign is harder, and also they have more types of missions that involve sabotage or guerilla warfare - hence no bases. Those early missions are rough with having to fight those Grenadiers without tech, aswell.

Mission select: Which one is easy which one hard?
I remember from when I played it as a child in mission selection the length of the arrows indicate the difficulty of the upcoming mission but I can't find anything which is which. When I googled I only found stuff about being able to scroll the map with arrow keys now or complaints you're immediately locked in to a mission when you click the arrows.
Also why are there so many Brotherhood missions where you don't have a base? As an adult I can finally appreciate the puzzle like nature to a certain degree but after I extracted the nuclear detonator from a GDI base I just wanted to play a normal mission. No way! Another baseless mission with limited troops 🙄 This time contrary to my childhood playthrough I wanted to play the Nod campaign first but even on normal difficulty it's too fracking hard so I had to start over as GDI 😅
