I've never understood why anyone would say that they hate mods. Some mods make games a lot better (see Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines & Dark Souls for two games that were not only saved by their mods, but made great by them), other mods allows you to tune games to something that you would like more (plenty of mods for the TES games, Sim City 4k, Cities in Motion), some mods end up being so good that they are made into standalone games (Counterstrike, DOTA, Arsenal of Democracy) and some mods just increases the longevity of a game (Jagged Alliance 2, TES, Shadowrun Retruns, Legend of Grimrock).

Also, what about mods that fixes messed up games, tweaks or repairs things?

I would personally much rather play a great game than just sticking with the flaws that the original game might have had (be it bugs, poor balance, missing content or just plain bland gameplay).

So, if the game has so many problems, the creators should fix them - not wait for modders to fix their game for free. -_- If the game creators won't fix them, then stop buying their games. ;P

Some games are worth playing without mods, but are better with mods. So it would be silly of me to not take advantage of that, why go for good when you can get great?
And if I followed your logic, I would have skipped Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, which is one of my all time favourites. With mods. Knights of the Old Republic 2 is also one of those games that would have been good without mods (and thus I would have played it), but mods just made it an objectively better experience, so I would have been really silly to not have modded my game. And in the case of KOTOR 2, the mods actually got the game closer to the developers original intent than the original launch did, because it restored cut content that the devs did not have time to fully implement.

I've played Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines without mods and it was an awesome game without bugs (except a door barrier, but it didn't need a mod to get fixed, only patience). Why would I need mods to play it? So, is it your favorite game only because of the mods? I haven't played the other 2 games, so I can't really know about them.

Because bloodlines gets even better with mods. Not only does it fix bugs (even if you did not experience any major ones, you did run the risk of it), but it also restores cut content, that they never had time to implement due to the game being forced to released at the same time as HL2, thus you get more content (as designed by the developers and then re-implemented into the game with the pieces needed to make it work added by the modders). VtM: Bloodlines with mods is an objectively better experience, thus I don't see any reason not to mod it. It's not like it's a hard thing to do either.

It's just such an irrational stance to take, I can't wrap my head around it. I can understand not wanting to go through the process of installing some mod that requires a lot of effort, but why not go for the objectively better experience when it's a few clicks away?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Forgive me for having a different opinion. :B It's a better experience for you, but it's a "tainted" experience for me. I appreciate the work of SOME modders, but still, the game creators should fix the game's bugs, not modders (that shouldn't do this for free). If the modders are gonna add missions, I don't care, because I want the original missions, not modded ones. If they're going to add new weapons and armors or unicorns or iron man suits, then frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. xD

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But what if they add missions that the original developers always intended to be in the game, but did not have time to fully implement & test, would that still taint the experience? How about cut story content, which was always intended to be there?

And if someone has gone to the effort to fix a game that they like, then why not take advantage of it? The modder modded the game because they wanted to, because they thought it was fun to do so, they did not mod it because they disliked modding games. It's really a win-win situation here, you get an objectively better game with fewer bugs and broken/missing features, they get to do something that they like. I still can't see any logic behind not taking advantage of mods.

But I liked it as it was. I don't want mods. xD So what if I missed some cut content in Bloodlines? I loved it as it was and I didn't experience any bug (except the one I told you, but it could be fixed without a mod). I don't want to "taint" anything - I wanted it pure and original. ^_^ If I add any mods, it wouldn't feel the same for me.

Quite a few games are like hamburgers, with certain mods topping it with cheese or whatever you put in your hamburger that makes it more attractive it for you. Answers like I don't like hamburgers or "sick fuck, who would want an attractive hamburger you're weird mate are forbidden :P certain mods are really, really improve on a game. Skyrim is an okay-bad-brilliant game, no matter how you see it - but for example SkyUI fixes it's UI, making it much better, regardless of one's stance on the base game.
Torchlight 2 has tons of mods, from infinite money to invincibility potion to weird effects, characters (and very likely nude ones :D ) and even ones that makes the game harder - everyone can have their favourite mod. For example I like to laugh at silly, non-lore mods but I would hate to play with them.

So, if the game has so many problems, the creators should fix them

Totally true, but strawman arguement. Noone mentioned reason of buying game, or even it's creators. I'm again monetization of mods because Bethesda will be even more of a slacker and just wait for modders. And cash in on them. But there is nothing bad that one buys a game because it will be better / tolerable with mods, because if a consumer likes it, it's okay. One buys games to have fun, and if mods required for them but doable, it's great. But really, in a lot of groups Skyrim and such's quality usually mentioned as "great with mods". More attentive people usually makes a difference between great game to begin with, and the ones you need to make good.
I know you like to get into not even serious arguements :P if you still want to stick to your no-mod arguement, by simply phrasing it as you want to experience the game without fixes, or changes made by others, so you have a clearer picture, it's perfectly valid and won't random people bash at you. (But again, knowing you you don't give a darn, just send some microbes after then and wait :P )
Really sorry if this seems to be pretentious or anything. I'm totally up for opinions if they can be explained (like you did to Fnord) but I still try to change them a tiny bit to help avoid future arguements with anyone. I'd just like to think I can prevent a few random internet arguements, making other's day better :)

"...makes it more attractive for YOU"....yes, YOU, not ME. xD It's about what someone prefers. I won't find it attractive with mods. I also don't like cheese in hamburgers (bring it on, you sick fuck :P ).
Infinite money and invincibility potions? Are you sure you aren't talking about cheat codes? xD
"Great with mods" is like saying "I wouldn't play it without the mods". :P Still, it's your opinion, just like I have a different opinion. :P
I like to get into non-serious arguments? Ok, maybe I'm guilty about this one. :B But it's still my honest opinion that I hate mods. xD It's the truth. I don't lie. I dislike "tainted" games, movies, songs, etc. I'll send you some letters with pathogens in it. Muahahaha. 3:)
So, to conclude, what was the problem with my opinion? It sounded hyperbolic? I shouldn't state it because there are a lot of people that love mods? I should have chosen a "cooler" verb in order not to anger the mod-lovers? You think I'm not saying the truth?
But anyway, you're cool, so I'll probably not send you any pathogens. :P

True, true. Like unicorns and Bigfoot in Skyrim. -_- There are some mads that are ok, but most mods are completely worthless and they're about adding weird characters and creatures in the game or change the colour of an armor or change the abilities of a weapon, etc. Anyway, about bug-fixing mods, why game creators expect modders to fix their game for free? Why can't the game creators release a game without problems?

because what is wrong or bad with a game its not the same, for example i dont like the soft-lock witcher 3 has on enemies, im sure almost nobody in the world noticed or had a problem with it, but i did and you know, there is a mod to remove it.

You have spended too much time on the most downloaded section of the nexus, the quaintly quality of mods its way to big, from excellent quest mods that arguably are better writen and executed than any base quest in skyrim, the Ironman mod for GTA V its more fun than any Ironman game released to date, Requiem for skyrims completly changed the experience, making the world feel more dangerous and challenging, Fallout's 4 2 upcomming DLCs were both inspired by mods from FO3/NV and Skryim.

to hate on mods, its to hate on fun, its to have a hotdog without nothing on it, to get ice cream and not put any topping on it, to get the plain old simple pizza, to dress in black everday, to play a need for speed game with a stock car... "i hate mods" has to be the silliest thing i read in quite some time. :P

It's simple, dear Luchi: I hate mods. :P Should I lie to you and tell you that I like them or that I'm just not interested in them? :P I just hate anything that destroys the originality of a game. But that's not all. I also don't like remixes of songs, remakes of movies, etc. You see, I like the original copy of something. If a mod helps to fix a game-breaking bug in a game, then it's quite logical to install it. But if a game has game-breaking bugs, then why buy it in the first place? If it's a plain old simple game, a game without interest or "toppins", then just don't buy it. If I'm gonna go around saying that I love a game but only if I install 100 mods on it, then that would be weird to say, because that wouldn't be the original game, but the game of a modder. xD Is a game interesting and it's working fine? Then buy it. Is a game full of bugs and/or without interest? Then don't buy it. It's simple as that for me. :P

cant you tell that by undermining the creativity and work mods have you also under mind the work games itself have, games are not movies or songs, they are platforms, to let you have experiences on them, by denying yourself of mods you limit the scope of experiences you could get from a game, in the end there no different in the content of a base game and a mod, both come ideas and concepts looking for "fun".

and over to the argument about bugged games, game are like anything that pursues something beyond pure function, are art, nobody should qualify games by functional product standard, or metric identifiers, every game its going to be different for everyone, games are not just X number of hours of gameplay, or X Km of map size, or X number of extra activities you can do, they are engineering achivements, functions and systems, created not to help someone with their taxes, it is by this logic that it perfectly acceptable to want to play a flawed game.

Dont you see that by denying mods, you deny the very basics concepts games itself stand by, and seeing how you quite seem to enjoy games i just cant fathom your points.

and now i leave you with a great remix far "better" than the original song :P

You keep forgetting what I said. I said "I hate mods" - I didn't say "All mods are shit". There's a difference.
I'll keep denying mods, thank you very much. As I said, originality matters for me. I'm also headstrong. :P I told you why mods aren't interesting for me. Bugs should be fixed by the game creators. Modded missions ruin the originality of a game (at least, that's my opinion). And I don't give a darn about cool modded armors, weapons, unicorns, and iron man suits. I talked about every kind of mod, right?
And how's that a better remix? xD

I think SkyUI for Skyrim because of the usefulness, and dialogue-resolution change for FO 3&NV.
Best content patch I played was I think Project Nevada - harder combat, more useful armor - making the game harder and a little more realistic instead of the "you're invincible player, enemies are bulletsponges" Bethesda way.
