In my opinion every freaking game on steam should have achievments. I bought several steam indie-games only coz they had achievments :D

Anyone else feelin like this?^^

You are not alone :).
I don't buy games because of achievements only though.

MY GOD! I just realized this.(My XBOX doesn't get much love because I'm primarily a PC gamer.) I think you're on to something!

Exactly and I also love the Gamerscore, I think it encourages me to play a game longer, even more than only ahievments :)

Hell, steam needs something comparable to Xbox Live`s gamerscore..

Since Achievements can easily be cheated without ever playing a game, no.

So true... this is my point of view too.
I would like archievments very much especially in Team Fortress 2.
I enjoyed them since I have known that they can be cheated easily.

On most Xbox 360 games that`s kinda hard..If you cheat achievments get deactivated

You are correct but also wrong. In the recent years, Valve has been able to lock achievements to make them server side, so that you can't cheat them. If they were able to spread that protection across all games, that would be interesting.

Only a few games have server sided achievements. The majority can still be unlocked by using SAM.

There are some third-party sites that assign score values to achievements based on their rarity and then give you a total score. Examples include SteamScore.net and SPAH.

And yes, I also like achievements way more than I should.

I think so too, I mean yeah they can be cheated but I'm not interested on others gamerscores, only for mine and for friends and Highscores are also often cheated.

I like having achievements in games in moderation. I never uninstall games until I have beaten it, or if it has achievements, I have beaten it and gotten 100% achievements. This means that I have several games in my library that haven't been uninstalled because of stupidly insane achievements that I'll likely never get, or games with DLC required achievements. Sure, I could use the third party program to get them done, but while it would technically be 100%, I would never feel like I had 100%ed the game myself. games should have achievements in moderation. give us standard game completion achievements, some skill based achievements, some collection based achievements, and NO MULTIPLAYER, LUCK, OR TIME BASED ACHIEVEMENTS.

yeah, especially the luck based ones (Still playing Faerie Solitaire because of the stupid eggs >"<).
And also the Multiplayer ones, when the game itself doesn't even have good amount of players. (like the PAM one that requires you to win in a full house, 6 human player game.)

Yeah, I wish Valve would work more on integrating achievements for games and helping developers and publishers. There are a large number of achievements that are broken and the games, abandoned.

The thing that's missing from Steam achievements is some sort of system for all the achievements to pool into one measure, like e.g. having each achievement associated with a number of points, then the total number of points can be seen on a user's profile or something. Right now, there's no bragging rights involved with getting achievements at all.

Exactly what I was coming here to state. I was addicted to achievements when I was heavy into playing on my 360, because I loved watching my score rise. I don't get that satisfaction out of Steam's achievements, so they don't appeal to me all that much.

I like the "binding of Isaac" way of achieving, getting a "medal" and an item in game at the same time!

I don't care about achievements one way or another, I just wish there was a way to disable the pop up that appears every time you get one.
I find it rather intrusive and it takes me out of the game, when I'm playing I want to focus on the game world not random miscellania.

isn't it possible by disabling steam community in-game or something ?

I'm pretty sure that there is a way to do that.

well I didnt check for other games, but I know for TF2 you can turn off the steam community by hitting right click - properties in your library, and uncheck steam overlay.

Wouldn't be surprised if that applies to other games too.

Downside is not being able to talk to friends and stuff like that.

I like ones that encourage you to try different things in a game, but not ones that are like 'hey, play our game more so that you can get this'.

IE in Alien Swarm, "Brutal campaign, hardcore and the level speed run" achievements encourage you to further play into the game, or try the harder difficulties - actually most encourage trying out all the different mechanics of the game. However all the ones that are like kill 1k/5k/25k/100k or get 100/250/500 kills with X weapon feel like they're just grinds.
Personally I love achievements though not to the extent of OP where I'll buy games just for them, but I'll certainly prioritise those that have achievements which give a secondary goal to the game.

Also fiarly pluggy but there are several 3rd party websites that emulate the XBL score thing if you're into that.

I would be addicted to achievements on steam if they actually awarded you with something or had a trophies/achievements system like ps3/xbox where you can show them off.

Problem is that those achievments in steam are so different from each other..some 60$ games have 20 achievments, some indie games for 5 bucks have 150 achievments.. Stuff like this would need to get changed before steam is even able to get something running like on Xbox Live or the Throphysystem from PSN

I like those challenging: beat the level under 5 minutes, finish the level without a single death, etc. I hate the "grind" achievements: Catch 1000 fish (Torchlight), kill 1000 enemies with every single weapon, etc.

I used to care for them, but then came to the conclusion that it's pretty much pointless, and I'm just wasting my time with it. Based on my own experience, achievements can be nice every once in a while, as the pop-up window makes you feel you've done some progress or something interesting, but achievement whoring has a negative impact on one's gaming experience.

I like them very much too!!!But I prefer to complete the game normally and then beat it again for achievements.

same here! it's more entertaining to me to see what achievements pop up while playing the game for the game, then going back through and trying to nab all the achievements. unless of course i didn't like the game all that much or some of the achievements are ridiculously difficult or require a huge time investment.

I like achievs but I don't buy games just for them. Would be cool if all games had em tho =)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They're kind of cool, I guess, but I never really strive for 100% completion unless there's actually a reason to do so. I mean, I'd 100% old GTA games without achievements period, but that's because the game gave me in-game rewards to go for it. I think Tenchu Z or whatever it was for the Xbox 360 was the only game I ever 100% finished, and that's because it was just entertaining enough and the achievements weren't difficult at all to complete.

With that said, I will frantically try my best to rack up achievements if it's Dungeon Defenders style - finish certain achievements, get trophies in your tavern and eventually unlock semi-unique pets. Useful? Not totally. Cool? Most definitely. I'd work as hard in other games if they just gave me shiny things for an in-game pixel wall!

Getting an in-game reward does make them even more fun (for that matter, just having an in-game list of the game's achievements helps). There are also some games where an achievement will unlock a TF2 hat, and there are the occasional Steam events with their own achievements.
