That's no reason to see praying as a bad thing. I don't pray, nor do I believe in mass organised religion, but I know praying offers a lot of people consolation and comfort at times like this, as well as perspective and closure. Even if they're maybe wrong in their beliefs, prayer is something positive for them. Other than that, prayer for others as tttomato suggests is nothing more than a form of compassion and respect for the victims, a loving act meant with a warm heart and intent. Still nothing wrong with that, it's quite admirable a gesture even.
As long as people don't only pray or see that as a cure-all to everything, and let it stop them doing something about atrocities "because God will fix it all", there's no issue with prayer.
