Exactly what the title asks!

I don't mean SteamGifts chat (Lord knows there is enough...madness happening in there) but chatting in Steam with people on your friend's list.

I ask because I never deny anyone that sends me a friends request. But here, in the past couple months or so, I get people that are really chatty. Now, chatty doesn't bother me. BUT, these people have been violating my one big rule for chat etiquette:

Don't ever bother someone in an immersive game.

If it's something like the Binding of Isaac, sure, bother me all you want. If it's something that's like To The Moon, Bioshock, etc, that has a really strong story to it. Don't bother me.

And I try to extend people the same courtesy.

What are some things that you wish people knew when it came to chatting on Steam?

I am always offline. Even when playing games. I don't want to be connected to other people, that's bull :3

I know what you mean about deleting or blocking people, I don't want them to get angry at me (Especially because everyone on my friend's list can contact me in other ways)

If someone wants to contact me, they can get me on skype, twitter, email, youtube, or the sandswept forums. I don't need big grey boxes blocking half my screen while I'm trying to play a game, any game.

No one ever adds me, but the people I have on friends I always have time to talk. I don't mind what game it is but I do sometimes leave them till a death or a break occurs.

Although what is annoying is when you have to take a phone call and the game requires two hands nor is pause-able!

People like to come into the room I'm in while I'm playing. I'll take half the headset off but not look at them, which apparently is rude. >.<

Aha yes, I believe that showing in some way that you might be listening by doing the occasional "mmhhmm" is necessary for these occasions.

Never (NEVER) bother me while I'm watching a movie. Only that. ._.

And I only keep real friends in my friend list, I mean those who I know irl or those who I like to chat with. So my friend list is small.

I generally have only friended people on Steam to play certain multiplayer games with them, so our chats have largely been limited to setting those up. I usually have other places to talk to them, and using Steam chat just feels weird to me for some reason. I bet this will change after i've added more people from here for giveaway exchanges, but still... to me, Steam's not ideal for chatting. o_O

Problem is that your pic is of a female. Boys like girls, it's a scientific fact that is taught to us homo sapiens at a young age at a large facility called "Skool." This is why they want to chat with you regardless of activity.

Secondly, you can always go offline Friends when you plan to play an important game. Me? I turned the sound and notification off for messages. This way, I only notice messages when I'm not in game. Though you mentioned you don't mind being bothered during not-so-amazing-as-To-The-Moon-like-games, I don't want to be bothered PERIOD. Likely because I'm livestreaming or something.

As far as random adds, though, I research the account and ultimately deny. Typically the account trying to add me is labelled as a Scammer on SteamRep, so I know what they're up to! Sneaky buggers.

Hm...maybe I should find a new profile picture, then. Maybe it's me being naive, but when I created my Steam account, I just put my current social networking site picture as my Steam pic.

It would be an interesting test, methinks. If you had a gender neutral image, check to see if you receive less additions? Especially if you're repeatedly active on sites (such as here at SteamGifts, for instance) it may be in your benefit. I'm assuming you've received many random adds from this post! Reverse psychology and all that jazz.

I dont tend to chat,I just sent this and wait...I dont mind when someone is talking to me. If im playing a game at the moment i let them wait till i find the proper time to answer. That waiting time is crucial, it lets them think what the fuck they just did!!!

My chat rule is that I respond whenever I feel like responding. I can't please everyone at anytime. Don't get me wrong, I don't ignore people all the time. But some days I really don't feel like talking, some days it's all I feel like doing. I've accepted some random friend requests, now I rarely do. If I don't know you and you're sending me nonsense in chat, the higher the chance is that I will ignore you at that point AND in the future, to be honest. Also, don't be a racist, homophobic, sexist and discriminating bigot. And no begging.

Yeah, sometimes you just need your own time, you know? No one else is entitled to it, unless it's my partner or my family. I'm a very gentle and humble person to people who deserve it.

When I play immersive games (or otherwise preoccupied/not feeling chatty) I simply don't log into communities. I'm invisible on Origin and in MMOs. Busy on Battlenet. Offline on Steam. Busy on Skype (so there is no noise/popup). Skype goes offline and phone goes on silent if I really can't afford any distractions.

Expecting people to be considerate and mind-read if your current game experience is immersing you is just silly. Work on your own comfort, no one is forcing you to be online in your spare time.

The thing that bothers me the most is when people send me links to images or worse still, youtube vids while I'm playing a game. I always make a point just to completely ignore those kind of messages. I just find it rude, I wouldn't do that when my friends are playing games.

I don't even notice if people message me in the middle of a game.
Also, I rarely write to people in "private". There's a reason I'm in various groups.

Edit: I also tend to ignore friend requests from unknowns. To now combat the "bad feel", I've recently allowed non-friends to comment on my profile, such that they can explain why they've added me.

Binding of Isaac isn't an immersive game!

Whenever people add me, I usually say hello and if they don't tell me why they added me, I'll ask them.

I've received friend requests and I will usually accept them, even if it's just to see if they're a decent person. I don't deal with beggars, or foul, mean or nasty people. If someone on my friend's list is in-game, I don't bother them - ever. If I'm in game, I'll let them know that we can talk later. I have several people on my list that came from winning my giveaways. I leave them on my list ~ I might have a key for a game they don't have and I think maybe they'd like it. I try to live irl with the attitude of, "Do something nice for someone, just because you can - without expecting anything in return, whether it's monetary or a favor down the road." It doesn't have to be a significant thing either. Just out of kindness, for we all need that sometimes. Seriously, pay it forward. It does make a difference.

It's the same for me, I don't like people talking to me while playing a game, but I don't really bother that much, I just don't respond, and I wait for the other person to realise that I don't want to talk, I'm not even that much of a talkative person to begin with :p
