That was because of the big storm in the eastern USA, it affected a lot of websites using Amazon's hosting service, like Netflix and Instagram and such. This is because their EC2 servers for the entire eastern United States were in northern Virginia, which got hit hard by widescale power outages.
It also knocked out power for 100,000 people in my county alone. It's been over a day. And nearly triple digit temps.
