Theres not a big difference between i5 and i7, youre better off saving that $100 and sticking to i5

i7 is for video editing and is hardly different from i5

But when i9 is out, you're better off having i7 rather than i5

I'm saying this out the top of my head, I didn't do research but...

i9 and i15 doesn't exist and never will be. Well... to be honest, it actually does exist, but has a different name.

We had a conversation about it at school, so I know that the 'i9-processor' is called Gulftown.

Processor series (i5/i7/i9, etc) and the Core name (Gulftown in this case) are (mostly) unrelated.
You can by an i5 Sandy Bridge (for example, i5 2500k) or an i5 Ivy Bridge (3600k). Both are from the i5 line of processors, but have two different cores.
I have a Pentium 4. It's a Prescott, but I could have gotten a Cedar Mill (admittedly, I would have had to wait 2 years for it).

How would a new processor type make a difference between the two previous types any different?

i7 is an overkill for games, if he had mentioned that he works with video rendering software etc. then yes, it would be a good idea.

Gear head mice are awful, just FYI. Everyone I've ever used at work had died

Yeah, I can attest to that too.
I saw a nice deal on a bluetooth GearHead keyboard/mouse and grabbed it for my mom last Mothers Day. One of the buttons doesn't always pick up, the cursor slowly drifts and randomly will 'spaz' out and jump around on screen.

whats a cheap wireless mouse you know of

You can get a Logitechs for a reasonable amount. I'm using a Logitech bluetooth keyboard that I got about 8 years ago. The battery in the mouse stopped holding a charge over the summer so I picked up a cheap wired Microsoft one as a replacement (works fine but I can't stand wired mice anymore).
Got my mother a Logitech wireless laptop one for $15 and she loves it (she likes the small size and I swear is secretly a MLG Pro Gamer since she has the DPI cranked way the hell up).

I love Logitech mice/keyboards... but their controllers are lacking and their headphones suck.

Might want to look at an i5-2500k Sandy Bridge. Everything I've read says, at stock speeds, they're almost as good the Ivy Bridge, but can overclock better/easier due to their lower heat output.
The i7's are nice, but tend to be a fair bit pricier than the i5 counterparts, it's up to you if the bump in improvement is worth the extra cash.

Also, might want to bump up from the 3550 to the 3570K for overclocking.
It's only $6 more, +100MHz stock, and OC-able.

Btw, if you live near a Microcenter, they sell the i5-2500K for $160 +tax in-store only. You can save yourself $50 over any online store if you go that route.

Also Also, Rather than getting a 1x8GB stick, You might want to look at 2x4GB sticks. While your motherboard DOES support 32GB (4x8GB), it's unlikely that you'll actually NEED the 32GB. Going 2x4GB could save you a couple bucks (not a huge amount) as well as unlocking Dual Channel to give you a bit of performance boost in that area. And if you decide 8GB just isn't cutting it, you can double (or even TRIPLE if you pick up a pair of 2x8GB) your RAM later on down the road.
And for what it's worth, I -HIGHLY- approve of Corsair memory. I had one stick that was starting to give me issues (4~5ish years after I bought it) and after a quick test with Memtest86, they replaced it with no problem.

2 is always better than 1

Processor is a bit worse than he wanted, and is locked (so no OC'ing in the future).
Western Digital Blues suck from everything I've read.
Powersupply is underpowered since the GPU's minimum is 500w.

The system is not even using 400w lol :D

Comments on your build

I suggest getting 4x2 memory instead of 8x1

Shell 70$ more for a 2nd Seagate barracuda and Raid-0 it

for mouse and kb, get Logitech.

Good choice for an SSD, I can attest crucial m4 is the baws followed by intel

Solid build. I can't say much about the mouse/kb/, but as others have stated, get 2x4gb of ram so you can utilize dual channel mode. It's worth it.
