I telling you right away: Fifa is not a game that interests me - so I have no idea about how it all works... but I'm trying to help out my little nephew. So here it goes...

My little 9 year old nephew is a soccer fan... so he got my sisters husband to buy him Fifa to play on their Family PC. His father is a typical office PC user so has little to no idea of anything PC related - hence the boy asking me for help.
He told me that he can't play anymore because he has sold one of his players. And since he doesn't have another player who plays that position ha cannot play anymore to "earn money". I asked him why he just doesn't buy another player to replace the one he "accidentally" sold and he said he doesn't have any money and to get more money you'd have to pay real money.
And then he also mentioned something in passing about game modes but I couldn't make much sense of that. I really don't know what that was about but would guess that maybe there's a free to play mode and then there's another more mode where you have better players/teams and you have and that's where they have "micro" transactions to buy those players for your team. So if you start out with one full free team then that's it.
I just cannot believe that you could mess up a game to a point where you cannot play it anymore because of a mistake you've made.

Now I'm wondering... can't you just reset the game and start all over from the beginning? Or reset that (whatever it is) game mode? As mentioned in the beginning I'm personally not familiar with Fifa (I've never owned any of its many versions) but I would like to help the little guy so the experience with his first owned game can be a good one rather than something that's all negative because of him making a (bad?) mistake.
Maybe some of you know what to do at this point...?

Huh? That's not a local issue but some sort of online multiplayer thing that support has to deal with?

Well, I knew that EA was all about micro transactions but that Fifa's a gacha game is news to me...

That is the reason that FIFA or soem other sport game pops up in news every now and then, where a kid drained the family's saving accounts by spending thousands of dollars/euros/pounds on player packs or something. It's insane.

Yeah... it indeed sounds stupid to me as well. I mean... how can you implement something that's game breaking (oh, right... to get people pay for more). Though I also don't get how players are still supporting something like that.

I highly doubt the game contains only one player for "that position". Sounds like fishy youthful trickery to me ๐Ÿ˜œ aka Daddy gimme money for shiny new players. But hey, maybe the kid made a mistake, and Fifa operates like this to draw more transactions.

Fifa games are a huuuge real money sink. If I were a father, I would limit my 9 year old to free-to-play modes, where no harm can be done.

I would assume you cannot limit the game in what works depending on who is playing. And I would assume him being smarter than trying that since a quick look at the game should reveal he's lying.

Ofc there are parental controls somewhere. Would be veeeery dangerous for a game like Fifa to operate without one.

I'm sorry I haven't provided any answers. I just don't think a 9 year old should have access to real money markets. He's barely passed 50% of the real life Tutorial. Smart or not.. temptation gets us all.

If he plays in modes that is limited to in-game curreny, then this won't be an issue. You will never be able to sell players to the point of rendering the game unplayable.

Fifa has a parental control menu in its settings? That would be the first game I ever came across that would have that.
The game has no age restriction - at least where I live. So there's that.

If it's in the game settings... I dunno. But Daddy can just set up an EA acc with limited access. For Kids. It's surely there somewhere.

But kinda feels like u are offended somehow. So disregard all I said...and have a nice day ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘

Yet, you don't actually understand the game modes he's playing, so did you check if it's possible to play and earn anything that would enable him to continue or not? Or are you just blaming EA before you are checking and just straight up believing someone that can't even explain you a game mode in a way you can understand.

I don't approve of EA's system and I don't play FIFA. But I can confidently tell you that you are wrong without even checking. They don't have the balls to do that because of the lawsuits that would come their way. Prove me wrong.

You cant start over but even with microtransactions you absolutely don't need to pay real money if you even if accidentally sold player. You can buy cheap Gold players with coins you get for playing and still earn enough rewards to get better players. Its pretty easy to do, FIFA giving playing cards and packs with players every week for just playing game against AI or against real players. Also you can play Pro Clubs mode where you simply choose whatever team you like and playing, without picking players and buying them on transfer market.

In the quick talk I had with him about it before he left (which is when he mentioned their being issues in the first place) he said that he can't play because he's missing a player in the position the other was in which he sold. Therefore rendering his team not able to play. Maybe he just hasn't discovered what you've mentioned about playing cards and packs.
Anyways, that's some infos I can look into. Thanks.

I'm guessing this is about FUT (FIFA Ultimate Teams) .. well this is the mode that EA makes tons of money out of in FIFA games
I wonder if your nephew actually sold a OP expensive player for crazy cheap, or sold an average player for average price ?

I don't have a lot of experience with EA FIFA games (last one I played was FIFA 19 and not a lot of FUT), but I did a quick google and there seems to be something called "Quick Sell Recovery" EA help article for detailed info >> https://help.ea.com/en/help/fifa/learn-about-quick-sell-recovery-in-the-fifa-web-and-companion-apps/
However this seems to be for the latest FIFA game (which currently is FIFA 22), and you haven't mentioned which FIFA the problem is at .. so if it is in older fifa (fifa 21, fifa 20 or older for example) this recovery thing won't help .. it also work if that "Quick Sell" happened in no longer than 7 days ago
If that recovery didn't help then you may try contacting EA support and they "might" help
If your nephew sold an average player then he could use a substitute player of a different position temporarily till he earns enough coins to buy a new player suitable for the position

If this issue is indeed in FUT mode then tell his parents to watch out for their credit cards .. 9 years playing money sucking/gamble mode like FUT is a disaster waiting to explode soon.

I assume FUT is likely said game mode - not a completly differen game from Fifa 22?
I don't know what he sold and what he got for it.

I would assume that he got Fifa 22... we didn't talk about that. When he told me his father is buying him Fifa I simply assumed they got the newest one.
No longer than 7 days? Good to know - I'll have to talk to my sister about that... not sure if he made that "mistake" only yesterday or in the days before already.

I don't think you need to connect a credit card with the game to play it in the first place, do you? Considering my nephews are very catious about money I don't think that would be an issue... especially since using a credit card isn't common in our families.

Anyways, thanks for the pointers! I guess I'll need to have another talk with him to get to the bottom of the problem.

FIFA 21 and 22 have a few different modes, Ultimate Team is one of them and separate from the others. He'll need to use in game currency to buy another player to fill the position to continue playing in that game mode. He can still play in the other modes. I'm almost positive EA isn't going to be able to do anything in this situation as it's a live marketplace for buying and selling players.

Hm... ok. Interesting.
So, what's different with FUT vs. "normal" Fifa playing against other people? I don't really get what the difference is.

You're welcome. When it comes to this feature it may be best for your nephew's parents to put a parental lock on the account for any buying/selling features to make sure they don't accidentally make any mistakes in the future.

Yeah, I would do that too if my experience with publisher customer support was good and if I knew anything about the game myself. So I rather ask people who have experience with the game themselves, first. Also to better assess the situation myself before actually contacting them - should it be necessary.

EA support pretty average, they outsourced it long time ago and their staff knew only basic information about their games

another easy solution would be that he can just sell another of his players and with the money he gets for that one he just buys two cheaper players again so he has a full roster :)

Well, that would be one way around it, I guess. I like the idea :-) Makes a good "punishment" to learn something from it until he has made enough "money" again to get the players he actually wants. Instead of having his parents put more money in it (or even put in some of his own savings).

Reading through this whole thread I must say that I'm quite shocked of just how much football games seem to have changed, back when I used to play them with friends (about ten years ago) it was a lot simpler. Leave it to EA to turn something straightforward into a micro transaction minefield.
Guess I'll stick to Rocket League for the foreseeable future, it's a bit of a grind fest for cosmetics but at least they haven't messed with the actual gameplay so far.

Hey, I play ultimate team pretty often (which is the game mode he is probably talking about) and I think he is lying about not being able to play the game.
On Ultimate Team, you start with a roster of a nation that you choose (England, Brazil, etc...). This roster will have random bronze/silver/gold players initially (depending on their rating, gold being the best), and you can earn more players by opening packs (that you can get either free for completing objectives and playing certain game modes inside ultimate team, like squad battles and division rivals, or buying with coins, that you earn playing the game) or buying from the transfer market, which is an online market where people can sell their players to other FIFA players using in-game currency, which is FIFA coins. You can get FIFA Coins by playing the game (and selling your players) and that is the only way to get it. The currency that you can get by using real money is FIFA Points, which is an alternative way of opening packs, and thats it. You cant use those FIFA points to buy players directly.
That being said, playing about 3 matches, either online or single-player is enough to get you an all-gold team. You need 18 players to play a match (11 on the first team + 7 on the bench), and you get waaay more than that with the initial roster that you get by creating the club. Also, you can play any player on any position. So, whatever he did, he definitely has more players to put into his team and play even a single-player match and be able to purchase another player for that position.
Also, even if he managed to sell all his initial roster players, he can delete the club and create another one any time he wants.
Sorry if my english is kinda confusing, any questions feel free to ask

Just so I don't forget - thanks for all of your explanations. they've helped understand me how things work in the game and tell him what to do. As a side note, I absolutely wouldn't say he lied about anything regarding the game but rather that he's simply too inexperienced with it still that he doesn't really know anything and everything about it and how things work. Which is - again - why your post was quite helpful. Thanks.
