No new messages notification

So I no longer get a little red notification at the top of the page for new messages. When I go to my messages it shows them just fine, including the envelope icon next to the new ones, but the button to mark them as read doesn't appear. Any ideas on how to fix this?

P.S. Sorry if I take a while to respond, my new message notification isn't working properly. :P
