RPG can be broken down much further than that. cRPG (or classic RPG like your early Bioware or Ultima games), aRPG (action RPGs, like your Diablo and clones), tRPG (or Tactical RPG, like Jagged Alliance or Fallout Tactics), jRPG (Japaense RPG, usually described as your classic menu driven RPG), Roguelikes (which are based off Rogue which is considered one of the "first" RPGs, many games have tried to emulate the gameplay and it has transformed into it's own genre). There's a couple more but those are the main sub-genres.
On the subject of this thread. Early Bioware games. Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale are in my opinion the best RPG titles of all time.

Stop to the first distinction (J/WRPG) is enough I think.
At the begining that was just that the OP names only JRPG. But in fact that depends what you hear by "RPG". Personnaly Diablo or Zelda aren't for me RPGs (Diablo is a H&S).

Yeah it was Interplay/Black Isle. Always mix them together for some reason. I guess it's because as you've said they all use the Infinity Engine.
