At least here in the US. It's that special month where black cats are revered more than other kinds. Where seeing a random skeleton person is normal (whatever that is).

You know what I mean. It's the month of Halloween. And even though it's not going to happen this year, we can all still celebrate in our own special ways.

Mine is to see what SG's favorite horror or science fiction movies to watch are for the time of the year. For the celebration of the times.

So, what are yours, and I'll share a few when I get home from work.

And before anyone says, yes I am aware that real life is the greatest horror story ever.

Definitely Hereditary, The Blair Witch Project and The Babadook if you like good psychological horror.

Or, you know... Cats.

Time to bust out the fantastic Halloween avatar jbondguy007 made me last year!

I have a love for the Saw movies. The gory crap is just so entertaining to watch, not to mention that the first movie is a geniunely well made movie for its low budget.

I heard it was the opposite about black cats, that they get abused or killed more during Halloween season because a lot of people still see them as bad omens/bad luck.

Yes I love black cats too! It's just a shame there are still people who believe in these dumb superstitions.

I think it was more something that used to happen than something current but that's sad none the less.
Especially since black cats were thought to be a bad omen because they supposedly were associated with Witches so you would think that people who celebrate Halloween or at least believe in it wouldn't touch black cats.

But then if we get into the logics of superstition, it's rather pointless, isn't it?

Ironically enough having a black cat on a ship was always considered lucky in some parts.

When I was a kid I loved Halloween but I also understood that black cats were supposed to be bad luck. I don't remember doing it but I might have chased away a black cat or two when I was growing up. Other people might only enjoy the giving or receiving candy part of Halloween and all the cute costumes but not the more macabre elements (gore, undead, black magic, etc). So it's possible to celebrate Halloween without loving everything about it. And then there's all the people who don't celebrate Halloween and believe in these superstitions.

Never knew about the black cat on a ship. I suppose cats in general would have been welcome on ships back then since they catch rats eh.

You're right, kids are most likely the worst offenders in that case.

Very probably. Why black cats more than others though, I do not know but I'll ask my buddies back home. There was a lot of fishing in the area until a couple of decades ago so one of them is bound to have a family member who knows

Yesss Classic The Haunting.
Not that the remake is that bad but it's just not as good.

The remake wasn’t ambiguous. What I liked about the original is that even after the movie ended you don’t know if the place was haunted or if she was just crazy

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Unfortunately it seems cinema has lost ambiguity. People want definitive and linear stories with a clear ending.
Shame.

Did you watch The Haunting of Hill House? Lacking ambiguity too this one but an interesting take.

Watch it. Every. Year.
Sometimes twice a year because my girlfriend and I have never been in agreement about whether it's more of a Halloween movie or a Xmas movie.
Lots of singing in the house after October 31st. And at work. My colleagues actually petitioned last year for me to stop singing This is Halloween until it's actually Halloween.

Have you ever listened to "Nightmare Revisited" songs? I really like the variations by Manson, Korn, Rise Against and Evanescence. And yeah, it is always a burden for my family and friends to make me stop singing the songs lol

And the eternal debate, is it a Xmas movie or a Halloween movie? Only Tim Burton himself knows.

I came into this thread thinking "Yeah! I love horror movies, I bet I could easily list some favorites!" And then... I realised that it's been a crazy long time since a horror movie has actually scared me :/

But some that actually did were "House on Haunted Hill (1999)", "Thir13en Ghosts (2001)", "Stay Alive (2006)", and "Mirrors (2008)"
Mind that I was much younger when I first watched these, so they may not be as scary these days >>

If you're looking for Horror, but not necessarily scary movies, I'd suggest "Dead Silence (2007)" and "The Limehouse Golem (2016)"

Overall favorite though would definitely be "Repo! the Genetic Opera (2008)" ...or maybe "Little Shop Of Horrors (1986)", musical horror, definitely the best.
