I had never danced before, but I joined the ballroom dance club at my college this past year. We go to a few competitions throughout the year and they always have times set aside for "fun dances" that aren't judged, you just go out there and have a good time. Unfortunately, our club never had enough meeting time for us to be able to really learn any of them so I never got to go out there and do any of the more international fun stuff like salsa, bachata, or mambo :(

From the little bit of ballroom I did (which was after my first salsa period) I found it very restricted. You have to do a certain combination and that's it, while with salsa from the start it's all about learning to lead the lady and combining what you've learned (which also is the difficult part for men).
Fun dances sounds like fun :)

When you first get started, oh yeah, it's most definitely like that. You get to have a lot more freedom and options once you get more experience under your belt.
